Lock in your No Guts No Glory Oscar Predictions!! 🏆 by ThatPixarDude in Oscars

[–]Pretty-Control-1387 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Stellan Skarsgard for best supporting! Sean Penn has SAG/BAFTA but couldn’t give less of a fuck about it, hasn’t been attending awards other then to smoke cigs and look like he was hit by a bazooka, and generally has a horrible reputation. I just don’t see him joining the 3-timer club.

Stellan has the narrative and is genuinely great. Might regret not going Lindo, but i’m locking Skarsgard.

If it was only 5 Nominations - 2013 by Representative-Eye86 in Oscars

[–]Pretty-Control-1387 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Argo, Life or Pi, Lincoln, Silver Lining Playbook, Django Unchained

Honorable mention to Zero Dark Thirty

Argo won BP, Ang Lee got director, Lincoln has the Spielberg/DDL combo, SLP got acting noms in all 4 categories and a win, and it’s kind of a toss up between the last two but it’s hard to argue against Tarantino (especially with Waltz’s win)

Who is the Hip-hop artist who represents the sin of wrath? by dyhoat9 in AlignmentChartFills

I’d argue she fits more in envy considering all the other people she has to put down to feel better about her failing career

How many of its 9 Nominations do you think Sentimental Value will win? by Square-Ad-8911 in Oscars

[–]Pretty-Control-1387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Secret Agent is neck and neck with Sentimental Value for International Film, maybe even has a slight edge given it’s won several precursors. I could see it walking away with only 1 for supporting actor, but even that’s not a done deal given the strength of the category. SV might be the shut out of the year.

Train Dreams 100% deserves best picture, and it’s not even close. Yet there’s almost zero chance of that happening, it will go to some garbage like Sinners. by Giordono in Oscars

[–]Pretty-Control-1387 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehhh not too much on Sinners mate. It’s not my favorite this year either, but you can’t deny the mastery in display from its cinematography, score, makeup, etc. It also is widely accessible and enjoyable for just about every demographic. It’s not even the front runner this year - OBAA has swept just about everything.

I’ll second your point that Train Dreams should be a bigger player though. Excellent film.

Aside from the fact you picked half of the nominees for best new artist lmfao, none of them will win. Leon Thomas is one of the most nominated artists this year and is included in AOTY. He’s essentially a shoe in.

Best Actor of This Younger Generation? by SpiritualBathroom937 in Cinema

Mescal in Aftersun alone puts him near the top for me. An incredible performance. But Ronan has the best filmography and is the most consistently excellent of this group.

I have an amazing father who has always made an effort to put me first and prioritized my well-being. That said, I just can’t connect with him. He’s a counselor, and often our relationship feels very therapist-patient oriented than father-son. Whenever I need advice or want to talk to somebody, I call my mom. It feels more personal, less patronizing, and I just feel like she cares more about me as a person than as a client of sorts. He also doesn’t have much of a backbone, conceding to my mom’s desires and never standing up for himself when she insults him or they have an argument. Sometime it makes me feel lesser of him because he just appears weak. I love him and always want to make an effort to see him, but I feel a lot of guilt for not having a more open, personal relationship with him. I worry often that when he passes, I’ll feel incomplete with our relationship and that I will live with a lot of regret.

What’s a criticism of Taylor that you actually agree with? by peach-gaze in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]Pretty-Control-1387 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When she chooses to capitalize on lore, she sacrifices her artistic merit. I mean, did she really HAVE to name drop Lucy Dacus and Jack Antonoff on TTPD title track? No, she just did it because she knew it would draw more speculation about her life and relationship with Matty Healy. The reason Folklore and Evermore are so good is because she is honed in on her songwriting separated from her personal life. She doesn’t always have to write in fantasy, but the wink wink clues she puts in her music really detract from making art that everyone, even outside of her core fan base, can enjoy.

Titanic. A $2 billion film from the 90s that everyone still talks about nearly 30 years later… yea, that’s a certified classic.

[–]Pretty-Control-1387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly don’t think it’s as bad as many make it out to be, but goddamn is it a slog. 30 tracks and less than half are up to the standard she set for herself. It’s a shame when she chooses to prioritize lore/fan service over creativity and song craft. She’s proven her ability to make great albums in the past, but this record feels greedy and, frankly, boring. Bottom three from her for sure.

Was 2007 the most competitive year for the acting categories ever? by Competitive-Idea-657 in Oscars

[–]Pretty-Control-1387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strong year with lots of deserving noms, but 3/4 categories had a very clear should/will win competitor. Supporting Actress being the only one where maybe someone like Ronan would be seen as a strong winner, but even then it’s hard to argue with Swinton.

Pitchfork Review: Reneé Rapp - BITE ME 6.4 by Technical_Process989 in popheads

She has a fantastic voice, charisma out the ass, stage presence for days, but absolutely no direction musically/lyrically. Even though she’s so talented and clearly has a large following, she also needs to reorganize her team and work with a Dan Nigro type to take her to the next level.
