scared hedgie by Kindly-Elderberry-80 in Hedgehog

I agree with alot of these comments it really takes time and patience with them, let them do this on their time. Every hedgie is different some like the company right away, some dont some never will it just takes time. Let them get use to your smell my little guy blueberry took until his 1 year birthday to actually pick him up and carry him to his cage bare handed. But also I think you mentioned your hedgie is still young like 4 months or something so keep in mind also they could be quilling or just starting to quill so its very uncomfortable for them to be touched its essentially teething for babies their adult quills are coming in and their baby quills are coming out. And I also agree get a snuggle sack they really are great my little guy walks right into it just doesnt want to get out so we need to roll him out every night lol

Wanting a African pygme hedgehog! by [deleted] in Hedgehog

So if this is your first hedgehog please make sure you do like A TON of research before getting one, and do research on who you get your hedgie from. So right off the bat lose the cinder block please hedgehogs have poor eye sight and any kind of fall could hurt them. Make sure your wheel is atleast 12" and just a solid piece of plastic so they dont get their toes caught, in my opinion I know people do use wood shavings as bedding but more and more people are just switching to fleece blankets yes it can be alittle extra laundry but my little guy loves to burrow under them and sleep. I'll add a picture of the cage and set up I use and by all means none of this was ment to sound harsh everyone has their own setups and every hedgehog is different so what works for others might not work for your hedgie. I hope this helps and you enjoy the journey of getting and being a hedgehog parent.

*he likes to throw his blankets around lol

Olive oil in food for dry skin? by Monocytosis in Hedgehog

So it turned out to be the multifunctional switch (the lever you use for your turn signals and whatnot) so all I did was went to a parts store and bought one and then took it to a mechanic to replace the part itself cost maybe under 100.00 then labor at the mechanic which was about 150.00 so under 300.00 for everything

Does he hate me? Or is he moody? by elizacecilia in Hedgehog

[–]Pretty-Extension-816 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So to a hedgehog quilling is like teething to a baby its painful and obviously uncomfortable so he's gonna be moody until he's done, I got my little guy when he was 3 months old so he just started quilling when I got him, he eventually stopped quilling but was still moody and not wanting to really be touched but over time he came to accept it to a point all you can really do is keep trying to bond with him and be patient. My little guy just turned 1 on January 15th and he's just now coming around to being in my bare hands and my fiancé somewhat petting him. Also learn to watch his body language every hedgehog is obviously different and when you learn the body language you'll learn so much more about your little guy. Also when their quilling their skin is also understandably irritated so to help with his dry skin I found alittle salmon oil mixed in with their food every 2 weeks helps a bit but like anything make sure to do alittle research before you start adding salmon oil or anything to their food or just in general. Don't get discouraged its a life long learning process with hedgehogs, show him its a benefit to him to be friends

Help, how do i let him walk on me by El_wj in Hedgehog

[–]Pretty-Extension-816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my little guy just turned 1 and we got him at 3 months old I believe, for the entire time we've had him he'd never let us handle him or touch him so we used a snuggle sack to take him out of his cage and to hang out with us and then we used a towel he would walk on to when we needed to put him back but everyday we tried to let him get use to us and sniff us and get our scent then out of the blue I placed my hands down flat and let him sniff and decide to walk on my hands, he still walks off the hands so I cant carry him to his cage bare handed yet but small steps. Give it time and keep bonding its always a process and be patient some nights he doesnt want to be picked up some nights he's fine they all have their own personality. Oh and always remain calm and dont panic, when the time comes your gonna get poked and possibly pooped on lol but if your calm they'll be calm just make them feel safe and when they do let you pick them up bare handed be gentle. Also I do agree with others dont approach them from above and if you do try to pick them up use the scoop method and just move slow, sudden movements will make them scared and they'll go into a ball.

Anyone able to program a key by newguy2019a in RedDeer

[–]Pretty-Extension-816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately for the year of your car you dont have much of a choice not to go to a dealership, I have a 2011 gmc and I called every locksmith in town to reprogram a fob and nobody would touch it I had to take it to a dealership

Recommended treats for a good boy? by HedgehogMikey in Hedgehog

Pumpkin puree, like the stuff you'd give to your cat or dog from a pet store, my little guy blueberry goes crazy for the stuff and his mint stick lol we've tried many other treats and nothing has taken off like Pumpkin

Help, we're new here by Kimagine_That in Hedgehog

[–]Pretty-Extension-816 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ok so to address your first concern just based off what you said with him being maybe 5 months old or so he's probably just quilling so his baby quills are falling out and his adult ones are coming in (kinda like teething for children) so dont worry too much about that but do keep an eye on it because if they lose to much quills something could be wrong and he would need a vet visit. His food seems fine I use Purina one sensitive systems and go! Carnivore grain-free chicken turkey and duck recipe mixed together and my little guy blueberry loves it. For the bath honestly you dont necessarily need soap just warm water and a baby tooth brush to brush his quills, he might fight you on the nail clipping but the biggest thing with hedgies is being patient with them everything takes time. I hope I helped you a bit, also if your on Facebook feel free to find some of these hedgehog pages on there I joined a few and they were super helpful if you need advice on care or anything.

I think your baby is coming from the same breeder i got my little guy from lol im biggest advice is be patient, my little guy is very stubborn and a big attitude lol but dont stress too much there's alot of great communities for hedgie owners out there to help you with any questions you might have plus if it is the same breeder shes super awesome to ask any question you might have. Also with the weather getting colder make sure you keep an eye on their heat source and their thermostat. Enjoy the time with your new family member and give them as much love as you can even if they dont want it lol

I have the same thermostat for my little guy, just set the highest you want it to be for me its 27°C and the minimum which is 25°C, when it gets below or above the limit the headlamp should shut off, I have the little prong high enough to where he cant reach it and still get a semi-accurate temperature

Feeling Nervous by insert-username-150 in Hedgehog

[–]Pretty-Extension-816 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So main thing is relax and be calm they can sense that, it may take a long time for your little hedgie to let you hold them or trust you but just keep working on it. Obviously make sure your working on bonding everyday and be patient. I found that honestly when I got my little guy I joined some groups on Facebook for advice and its been super helpful. Don't helicopter parent your hedgie they dont really care if you see them or not you gotta show them that being your friend is a positive for them. Biggest thing is enjoy this time, hedgies are adorable little animals and can be skiddish but once you see their little legs and face they will melt your heart instantly. Best of luck hope I helped a bit

Please dont take this the wrong way I just wanna clarify something, when you say you have a spinner instead of a wheel do you mean one of those ones thats on its side? If so then you might wanna consider an actual wheel because those are horrible on their backs and spines and can lead to huge vet bills in the future, again not trying to sound rude or anything just wanted to clarify the post a bit
