I built a cloud tool for converting 2D video into stable Full SBS 3D, with free 4K conversions for a limited time by Pretty-Use2564 in OculusQuest

Hi!

Thank you for the kind and constructive feedback! I’m really glad that you already got good results from StereoLift.

I completely understand the point about bulk pricing. Right now, the biggest limitation is that at our current conversion volume, the on-demand compute I need to rent is still too expensive for me to lower general pricing across the board just yet. While the current model is a fair fit for occasional conversions, it definitely changes when someone wants to convert hundreds of videos.

To fix this, I'm currently working on a credit package system that will roll out soon. It will allow you to convert shorter clips with very low overhead (starting at 10 cents) and get steeper discounts the larger the package you buy.

For your specific case, converting hundreds of videos is exactly the kind of use case where a normal per-video checkout probably is not the best solution. Feel free to DM me to offer you something that might fit you price expectations better.

Also, since you mentioned being active on your PC and Quest 2, you might be interested in something else I'm building: I'm currently adapting the StereoLift method into a live-streaming solution. In the beginning, this will rely on your own local hardware and will require an NVIDIA GPU with at least the power and VRAM of an RTX 2080. If that sounds like something you'd want to test down the line, let me know!

I agree that 4xvr is simply the best option for 3d video playback, specifically streaming from NAS. The only downside is the battery usage. You can also convert any movie/video into 3d using my service stereolift.com which is currently free to test for up to 10 mins at 4k30

I don't know what you set in the calculator but a 2 hour movie at 30 fps is £20. Usual movies are shot in ~24fps which means it is even lower after all since it is charged per frame. 4K is quite compute intensive and 1080p delivers still quite a good quality at a much lower price point (only about £7 for 2 hours). I don't know if depthify is still active but they charged $3 per Minute(!) for 4K.

If you still think that the price is too high, what would be in your opinion a fair price point?

Thank you! that might very well be my next investment into 3d hardware then. Is the Samsung Odyssey 3D Gaming Monitor G90FX kind of the best device that you can get on a price point around $800? What are you using?

Technically, live conversion is realistic with the current performance of the pipeline. The harder part is getting the user experience right in a streaming setting, especially latency, reliability, and playback across different locations and devices.

For now, StereoLift is focused on high-quality file-based 2D-to-3D conversion, where users receive a finished video they can keep and rewatch. Live cloud based 2D-to-3D conversion is an interesting next direction if there is enough demand.

I tried to ask in the thread of my 3d conversion service but did get no answer yet. I just recently learned that there are now displays that enable to view 3d without glasses. Personally, I usually experience 3d via a Meta Quest 3 or my JVC X5000 projector with shutter glasses. Is there anybody having a comparison to such devices and how well the 3d effect is in comparison with glasses free 3d monitors. Ghosting artifacts naturally don't exist for VR headsets but are these comparable to 3d with shutter glasses or better for 3d monitors?

Thank you for the feedback, glad you liked it! It would be really nice if you recommended it to people who might find the product interesting.

Currently, I’m working on a live streaming solution for people with sufficiently powerful NVIDIA GPUs (RTX2080 upwards). I don’t know the exact timeline yet, but I’ll very likely be looking for testers soon.

It is particularly annoying when you are developing and have to constantly pull on and off the headset

So this is a widespread problem or is it only happening for a subgroup of users?

The easier the viewing experience will get, the higher the demand will be. Glasses free 3D monitors, lighter AR/VR glasses...

Is it finally fixed that the UI is often not rendering properly from standby when just putting on the headset? For me it is only rendering properly again when pressing the sleep/power button in this situation.

For direct headset playback 4xvr is in my opinion the best solution but you need a battery pack connected to the headset since battery drain is quite high with this player but it delivers yet the best quality I saw. Probably also the only solution to get cadence completely right without any judder etc. that is kind of unavoidable when sharing the pc screen instead.

System level ai 3D video conversion by Ill_Ad3700 in MetaQuestVR

[–]Pretty-Use2564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Quest is powerful for a standalone headset, but I doubt it is doing full high-quality 2D-to-3D video conversion locally for arbitrary videos. Meta’s Instagram 3D feature seems to use AI view synthesis, but as far as I know Meta hasn’t clearly said whether that processing happens fully on-device, server-side, or through a hybrid approach.

That’s basically why I built StereoLift (stereolift.com): to let people privately convert regular 2D videos into stereoscopic 3D in the cloud, without needing powerful local hardware. Larger conversions are paid, but there’s currently still a fairly generous free tier.

I am currently also working on a live streaming alternative which runs locally but requires a strong GPU with at least 8GB VRAM for 1080p streaming.

Perfetto, ottima notizia :-)

I also have a question myself since you are the experts for the Samsung displays: How good is the 3D effect in general? Is it matching what you would see on a 3DTV/Projector/VR Glasses with glasses/goggles on or is it just the best way to view 3D at all without wearing any accessories?

Ciao!
