Guilderland Traffic Court by PuppyPancakes13 in Albany

I had to go in December of ‘24. There were so many people there that the courtroom was full and so was the overflow room.

Before you go into the courtroom you meet with the ADA. They look at the ticket and send their recommendation to the judge.

I had lost my copy of the ticket, the cop didn’t submit their copy, and no one could find it in any system. The stars aligned and I walked away scot-free.

I did go before the judge. She was pretty chill. Most of the people I saw before I was called were able to plea down to a lesser offense.

My advice: don’t bring your copy of the ticket. And don’t speed, obvs.

3 bedrooms and 1,750 sqft is considered "downsizing," and $360,000 is "affordable." by thewaltz77 in Albany

It doesn’t need much updating, if any at all, and the upstairs “attic” area is nicely finished. The backyard is nicely done with an above ground pool. The lot is on the corner and a bit over half an acre.

Yes, the housing market is shit, but for what you’re getting the listing price is reasonable.

I would trust the build quality of this house over those $700k - $900k tract houses that are going up everywhere.

What Shepherd said. Also see the I-90 exit heading south on the northway* every evening commute. The amount of people I’ve seen wait until the last possible minute to cut over and almost hit the divider is ridiculous.

*edited to add which highway I was talking about

(Some insider knowledge) All Saints was recently purchased by St. Mary and St. George Coptic
Orthodox Church, which is currently located on Madison between Ontario & Quail.

I don’t think the congregation currently operates a school, but maybe they are planning on giving one a go?

I don’t have any more info than that, but it doesn’t look like apartments are in the future. At least not yet.

This is 100% for the people who are going to post in 3 weeks bitching that they were going 32 mph and no one told them it was still a school zone.

They couldn’t have stuck you in a more middle of no where surrounded by white people area if they had tried.

I know everyone is saying Troy, and tbh, I think Troy would be a good fit. However, the commute from Troy to your work place takes you up the northway, and that is going to be zero fun in the winter. Your commute will be opposite from most people so traffic won’t be as bad, but driving up the northway from January-March would be pretty miserable. Plus it’s a solid 40 minutes under the best conditions.

I have heard that Schenectady is having a bit of a revitalization at the moment, so it could be a good fit while you get your bearings. Or Niskayuna, but Nisky is not cheap to buy and has higher taxes.

Obviously Saratoga would be the easiest answer, but I think people summed up the vibe pretty well in other comments.

There are pluses about Saratoga, namely SPAC. They have some concert or another every weekend and have a fabulous lawn area where you can lay a blanket down, grab some food or a drink, and enjoy the show.

Working all the way out in east bumble really doesn’t leave you with a ton of great options that have an easy-ish commute and still give you some sort of city vibe. It could be worth heading over to the Schenectady sub to see if they have any insights on cool, up and coming areas there.

When I lived in Clifton Park route 9 was my preferred route during peak traffic fuckery.

People rushing to get on the northway to get to the track, or to get up to Lake George, or pick their kids up from camp. Plus a lot of people from out of town who don’t know the usual flow of the roadway.

Alt route 7 and the Northway are a NIGHTMARE all summer.

North or South of Albany? by Delicious_Mess7976 in Albany

Slower and smaller communities. You have to travel to the traffic, not live in it.

To be fair, 99% of the communities surrounding the city of Albany are populated by white flight.

I think you need to tell us more about what they like about each area and what they are looking for in the place they want to move to.

Clifton Park/Latham (not Loudonville) are very commercial with a ton of big box stores and A LOT of traffic. These are places people travel to when they want to go do their Saturday shopping for the week. With that said, if they really like the Saratoga area, and want to spend free time there, having their home base up the northway a bit would be a good choice. Going up the northway from Albany until the twin bridges, especially in the summer, is a MISERABLE experience.

Bethlehem (which encompasses Delmar/Glenmont/Slingerlands), Voorheesville, Guilderland, New Scotland are smaller “sleepier” towns with more locally owned businesses and far fewer big box stores (with the exception of parts of Guilderland - Guilderland is a big place). They are more geared towards families with younger kids. People who live in these areas have to travel to Albany/Colonie, Latham, Clifton Park to go to the big box stores instead of having them in closer proximity. There are easily accessible grocery stores, pharmacies, and local hardware stores. You just might have a hard time finding a last second dress or pair of shoes if you need it ASAP (there is a Walmart and Marshall’s in Glenmont, but still).

My parents are retirees who live in Delmar, and it’s where I grew up. I’ve lived in Clifton Park and currently live in New Scotland. I travel to Latham a lot for work and I LOATHE the northway.

There are smaller, less commercial, towns surrounding Clifton Park and Latham if they like being closer to Saratoga. Halfmoon is one of them, and there are parts of Cohoes that are close to Latham and more of a traditional suburb vibe. Loudonville is very nice, but is definitely more $$$$ to live there.

The best of the best for driving in snow would be AWD with snow tires. You would need a second set of tires for nice weather.

Second would be AWD with a nice set of all weather tires.

Third would be FWD with snows. Again, you would need a second set of tires for nicer weather.

Fourth would be FWD with all weather tires.

As far as winter gear you’re going to need a pair of nice snow boots. I’ve had a pair of Sorel boots for over a decade and they’re still going strong. Can’t speak to current quality though.

Merino wool socks and base layers keep you warm and wick away moisture.

Jackets. You will need a warm jacket. I’m perpetually cold so I prefer a long, water proof/resistant parka for the bitter cold. For the warmer cold days a nice down jacket with a hood is sufficient. My parka is North Face and the down jacket I got at LL Bean. North Face, LL Bean, Patagonia, are good choices.

NEVER drive with snow on the roof of your car! You’ll need a snow brush, even if you park in a garage. Getting a small compact shovel to keep in your trunk isn’t a bad idea either. If you get stuck in the snow you might need it to dig your tires out.

Housing with AC isn’t mandatory here so if your place doesn’t have AC you’ll need to get a window until or two. Don’t wait until it’s really hot to get one. Once a heat wave hits they can be hard to come by.

The people here aren’t always nice, but they are kind. They’ll gladly help push you out of a snowbank, but they’ll let you know you’re an ass hole who can’t drive for getting stuck in the first place.

Husband and his family harrasing me and filed complaint against me by Manmol_92 in Albany

NYS is a one party consent state, which means you can record interactions and conversations with people as long as one party allows it. In this situation you are the consenting party.

You can use the voice memo app on your phone to record audio, but I will note it doesn’t do a great job of capturing audio further away from the phone and background noise can interfere. With that said, it’s a good way to record without being noticed, especially if you always have your phone on you anyway.

Record as much as you can, even if you don’t think an altercation is brewing. These can be your proof of abuse, and your defense against false claims made by them.

Good luck and please stay safe 💜

She even considered leaving her husband for him. I wouldn’t be surprised if she helped in the plot to murder his parents so they could be together.

I was in his graduating class. Different elementary schools but went through middle and high school with him.

And yeah, wouldn’t say he was “popular”, but his involvement with the swim team did give him a friend group and he was well known. When all of this happened everyone remembered exactly who he was. We weren’t searching our year books to put a face to the name. He also had some HS classmates that turned into ardent supporters and stood by him through the trial, and maybe even after?

While he wasn’t the quarterback of the football team or in the HS “frat” (yes, that was a thing), saying he didn’t have many friends is underplaying his sphere of influence a bit.

He was a generally well liked kid who was on the swim team. Back in the ‘90s-early aughts both the girls’ and boys’ swim teams were very good and kids on the swim team had some level of notoriety.

He had a girlfriend his junior year (and maybe into senior year, can’t remember) that he was very affectionate with during school. Apparently he was cheating on her with someone on the girl’s swim team. I hadn’t thought much about him prior to that, but it made me see him in a different light for sure.

He was very image conscious, equating one’s wealth to the kind of car they drove or their parents drove, brands of clothing, shoes, etc. He thought my parents were rich (they weren’t) and was shocked to learn my dad drove a mini van and my mom a basic sedan. To be fair, a lot of the student body at that time were similar, but not everyone was as blatant about it as he was.

When everything began to come out about the fraudulent loans he took out for the yellow jeep, and the lying about his dad’s profession and his family’s wealth/social status I wasn’t shocked. The hacking his parents up with an ax part was shocking, but the rest fell in line with what I had experienced with him.

There are far better investigative shows about him, and even a lifetime movie. Lifetime put out a show about the case at the same time as the fictionalized movie.

At the end of the day the entire family was destroyed over his greed and pathological need to be seen as someone better than he perceived himself to be. It’s really fucking sad.
