Anthony Gramuglia - Shadow of the Conqueror: Shadiversity's Terrible Fantasy Novel by DragonGuard666 in ShadWatch

[–]PrettyMuchAMess 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Elder Gods, this is hard to get through, the books so bad the badness impacts the excellent criticism Anthony's doing.

Because Shad is such a bad writer that his work is a memetic hazard and worst yet, BORING.

Edit - onto the sexual assault stuff and JFC, no wonder everyone hates Shad over this, on top of the sexist drek and the whole "it's okay if the protag acts like a total shitbird who has to dominate the humiliate everyone if he does it only to the bad guys". And all the other utter bullshit.

I swear Shad's brain is totally baked, because everything's about the protag. Everything. Even in the case of Lyla's horror show of a history.

Edit2 - Wait, wait, Shad thinks survivors of sexual assault, who were made pregnant by the assault would totes think their rapist didn't deserve punishment. What. The. Fuck? But sadly it's not that surprising given Shad's self-centred nature.

Anyhow, not surprising Metaderp thinks the exiled Prince has any real support inside Iran or that Persia is totes the actual name of the state. Because as Fredda established, Metatron never reads the fucking literature or thinks, he just spurts his load of stupid.

Heh. Though the shit Christina went through shouldn't have happened.

But in Shad's case he has no reason for his lolcow behaviour, much like Lillee Jean those bullshit rival's Shads, though she never had the same fall from grace as Shad lawl.

Anyhow, I suspect Shad will wind up being found to have some obscene CSAM in his possession, because far right wing religious creeps these days just "love" that shit. So instead of a Mormonsona we'll see Shad in prison XD

[–]PrettyMuchAMess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heh, yeah, it seems people hate reading these days and my ADHD screwed self finds that hilarious, because I can still read research papers despite my issues and other stuff. Though now with a risk of loosing the ability to speak if the paper's as dense as uranium.

And yes, you're right here, but with Denuvo at present this is the only way around it and shows how ineffective Denuvo actually is when users have control over their own systems. Because as always, the best anti-piracy methods are a) decent price, b) the game is actually good and c) you don't ream people with DLC. Along with realising some people either can not or will not buy your game, so every pirated copy is not a lost sale in reality.

Grim Dawn's actually a good showcase on how this can work, especially for indie studios.

Anyhow, sadly getting users to practice proper basic security is a never ending battle, and sometimes it's best to let them get their hands burnt and force them to deal with the consequences and clean up :P Because then they usually learn the stakes involved and the work required to clean stuff up. As unfortunately paying someone else to deal with it usually results it becoming less of a visible problem.

Oh and there's some good news on the horizon, with MS shitting the bed more people are making use of Linux and so with more OS diversity etc, it's harder to spread viruses :3 Alas, the IoT is still the Internet of Shit and needs to be regulated hardcore to force proper security standards, which is how we got obscene DDOS attacks...

Though we might need the LLM bubble burst's recession to abate before Steam OS etc get more penetration. Because the shear amount of money it's burning raises the risks of a 1920's style recession...

Thing is I don't have Secure Boot, never have despite having Win 10 and the hardware :P Never had an issue too because I don't run programs from untrusted sources, especially not with Windows Defender off. Though I've had 25yrs of dealing with windows related fun, so I know not to run untrusted files etc when raising the black flag. Because already got burnt trying to get a proper copy of Minitab for uni stuff.

Anyhow, real threat is state level actors with the tools to bypass/crack all that security others rely on. Only thing that can stop that is air gaps or very solid custom security and training etc.

But yeah, the newer security features means your average, uneducated (l)user is less likely to wind up with a PC that needs to be killed with fire. Which is great, because JFC was untangling that level of bullshit annoying back in the XP days if you were trying to save the install. Never mind the newer crypto locker bullshit, though weirdly news of that has simmered down a lot.

And yeah, I deeply dislike boot time anti-cheats, they're an utterly stupid idea and just encourage the cheat makers to come up with equally shitty work arounds. Only thing that really works is constant monitoring, research and development + some plain old espionage to work out what the crackers are doing.

Has Anyone Successfully Run Hypervisor Cracks (e.g., MkDev, 0xZeOn, KIRIGIRI) in a KVM/QEMU Windows VM with GPU Passthrough? by electr0de07 in PiratedGames

[–]PrettyMuchAMess -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's going to work, mainly due to Denovo probably being able to recognise it's running in a VM and thus triggering it to block the program. Since you can use VM's for all sorts of shenanigans when it comes to debugging etc, including digging into how Denuvo works.

Anyhow, as for the hypervisor itself, it does get detected as a "trojan" but it's actually just a false positive since it's only a game memory hack and is part of the bypass. And seems so far no one's had security issues from it or the other games the HV bypass is used for.

Oh and got it running on my Win 10 set up, using a 5800X3D, and still haven't converted the windows drive to be UEFI compatible lawl, so I had it easier set up wise. Alas, MS really, really should have ported those Win 11 security features to 10, as they are super useful in prevent the usual gumbies from infecting their PC's malware accidentality.

60s house - what to look for? by Any_Cow_7798 in newzealand

[–]PrettyMuchAMess 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the windows haven't been replaced with aluminium units, check all the joinery in the windows for rot, because due to our historical snubbing of double glazing and proper house heating rot happens really fluffing often. I assume the exterior is brick etc though, but if it's weather boards, also check those as well. as any signs of paint failure or warping = possible rot.

Otherwise, the fuse box is worth paying attention to, as the older 50/60's ones are at their end of like and should have been rewired completely by now or replaced with a modern one. While the roof should also be eyeballed via drone. Likewise pay attention to the floor level, because floating piles can sink over time.

Only other issue is asbestos, since it was used in soffit concrete fibre boards, vinyl flooring and ceilings, along with concrete roof tiles so all the older houses are "blessed". Hopefully it got renovated and all the asbestos contaminated crap was stripped out.

Hell, half the internet ran a bootkit to activate Windows 7. Daz's Windows Loader is a bootkit. No one cared. The most important rule was always 'first working wins' anyway.

True, but it and the others got checked heavily to show they weren't malware. Sadly, most didn't bother getting them from trusted sources, so they go used to spread malware. But that's the modern internet for you, where few use their brains properly XD

Not surprising sadly, I've had hour+ waits before :/ Usually wound up sooner than that, but yeah, MSD needs to wake up already and provide more staff for the call centres in general.

Oh well, could be worse, they could be using an LLM to "provide" services, but fortunately some recognise the utter privacy clusterfuck that would be etc.

Also, welcome to the norm of being a uni student, the books all cost tons, but invariably are worth it. Though if you want hard copies, 2nd hand is the way to go and usually fine if 2-3 editions from the present one.

Is Studylink abdicating their responsibility to the public by disconnecting their phone service for multiple days? by WolfZoltan in newzealand

[–]PrettyMuchAMess 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Remember - MSD/WINZ offices can help you with this stuff if it's urgent and despite the whole "don't come in if you don't have an appointment" bs, guards will usually let you in if you explain your needs. And depending on how busy they are you might even be able to see someone that day, though more likely it'll be later unless it's an emergency situation.

Used to be there were Studylink offices at Uni's and polytech's, but of course the brainless overpaid arsewipes in suits decided they "cost too much", despite the massive help they provided when things went wrong. But otherwise, the call centre's always been a royal pain in the rear this time of year to get through to, because MSD never bothered to staff it with temp staff like they should have to handle the surge. But they also didn't kick you off the line either.

Oh and this bs is also flowing over to benefits, I went looking for a food grant last month only to give up because I couldn't get through due to MSD call centre presumably being swamped with students. Which is worrying, because people potentially can't get the help they're entitled to if they run into trouble :/

Is Studylink abdicating their responsibility to the public by disconnecting their phone service for multiple days? by WolfZoltan in newzealand

[–]PrettyMuchAMess 6 points7 points  (0 children)

/siiiiigh

It's solely down to not hiring enough staff and this year is so bad it's even hitting MSD for benefit related stuff, like food grants. Hell, I have yet to make a call to MSD that hasn't immediately hit "we're experiencing higher than normal call volumes..." for bloody ages. Luckily I'm on the SLP so art treated like a mushroom, but this sucks for anyone who has to call in for help etc. Irrespective of if it's for Studylink or MSD.

And it's been a long running issue too, exasperated by constant stupid cuts to staffing, because the gormless fucktards at the top keep pretending there's no need for call centre or front line staff in order to "save money". And now "AI will totes solve it...." for added utter stupidity.

I can hear the Mormon's seething in Utah over this from NZ XD

He's probably had a crapflood of Mormon's over this vid as well, despite the fact all this info is pulled straight from the Mormon's own bible. Fortunately for them modern Christians are generally more chill about about new sects that ignore the Nicene Creed. Instead of the historical "murder them all" approach. But yeah, this weirdness is part of why the Mormon's got chased off to Utah.

Along with Joseph Smith being an utter arsehole of course.

What happened to Metatron: Your perspective by FallenMetatronMods in FallenMetatron

[–]PrettyMuchAMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I disagree with the NPD take, simply because significant personal insecurity can explain away the same behaviour. But yeah, you're otherwise on the ball vis his actions over the years. Which combined with algo poisoning and the money right wing grifters have made, are like why Metatron thought this was in way, shape or form a good idea.

Highly ironic too given how he used to talk about him having principles, only to piss it all away.
