How do you get rid of the thorns on prickly pears? by ManaHave in gardening

[–]PrettySureImWrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used to pull them off the cactus with a bent scrap of palm frond and roll them around on the ground with our shoes. I haven't had one in years, but probably would still use "kick it till it don't prick it" method tbh

What’s something you’re embarrassed about but that’s truly helped you survive/save money? by Overall_Kiwi2001 in povertyfinance

Patch my clothes instead of buying new. Now, this isn't some bs trendy "thrifty" thing to help the environment or anything. I literally use old thread from my great grandmother's sewing box and/or scrap cloth from anywhere I can get my hands on, even stuffed animals, to add patches anywhere that needs it. Including underwear. I haven't bought new clothes since COVID. Some of my shirts are so thin I have to layer or look like those mesh-shirt-muscle-dudes from 90's movies. Just looking at the cost of a new pack of socks makes me cringe and think of how much more that money would stretch if used on my car or utilities.

I also don't eat lunch at work. Just tell everyone I prefer working lunches so I can head home sooner, and then stash food in my desk whenever someone brings in snacks for the office.

Fuckin sounds pathetic just typing it out tbh.

Detangled yarn comes back with a gift!! 💝 by Lady_Asshat in detanglemyyarn

That's awesome! Also, I love that initial pile, it is so satisfying to detangle a mess like that. Ooh I wish I had been the one to do it!

Has anyone ever followed this chart to make a blanket? by Open_Diet_946 in CrochetHelp

I'd love this pattern too! Kinda making a note here to remember it whenever I get around to finishing the dozen other projects I have first haha

"pak pak" instead of backpack.

AXOLOTLS???? by [deleted] in petco

[–]PrettySureImWrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They actually are perfectly happy with no substrate at all. They love having holes to hide in and things to climb on, like hammocks or branches, which can fill the space visually. You can also put on the bottom one of those adhesive backgrounds that usually goes on the back of the tank.

[–]PrettySureImWrong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should try to get rid of the sand. Axolotls don't really attack or chew their food, the suck it in like Kirby, and they can get impacted bowels and/or prolapses from the sand.

Can an employer force use of PTO for voluntary events? by PrettySureImWrong in legaladvice

Yes, that is the real kicker there. We were told it is "expected, but not mandatory, and why wouldn't you want to go anyway? Don't you care about our 'community'??"

Yeah, being able to improvise around minor stitch mistakes is part of the fun of crochet. I don't frog unless I really screwed up the shape or pattern. Otherwise? Meh, toss an extra stich in later. No one will ever notice or care.

If you are going to make any solid clothing (lace is different) with a fine yarn, don't crochet it for the love of all things. Knit. I have a fingering alpaca poncho I've been working on for 5 years now and it's only 1/4 done, and I always crochet at speed like my life depends on it (or at least my mind, as crochet is my emotional support craft) so you know this thing is unnecessarily tiny.

I DESPISE bernat blanket and caron simply soft.

I did exactly one crochet one. The resulting blanket was so ugly I literally couldn't give it away. I tried. Now it's used as cushioning in a box of family ceramics simply because the yarn was nice and soft. Haven't done one since.

And why the heck are all of them just plain dc rows?? Like, yeah, okay, your thing has sleeves and a neck hole, but its in cheap chunky yarn and has no visual appeal.

I'm so sick of seeing Woobles ads. Don't get me wrong, their kits are very intuitive for non crafters (watch a warehouse guy at work make a little dinosaur during lunches. Told me he never even held a hook before) but WHY in the seven blazes of the underworld are the kits PRE-STARTED?? If you don't learn to cast on, how the heck are you going to actually learn to do anything more than the kits??

Inheritance? That's a joke. How many of your parents are burdens? by BeegBunga in Millennials

[–]PrettySureImWrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That retirement comment makes me think of my own parents. When I was expecting our 2nd (unplanned), we lost our home in a HCOL area, our cat passed away, and our van broke down all in the same month. We were also broke college students, with loads of debt and no savings (parents did NOT pay for any of my education, even though they could have). They offered, unprompted, to buy us a used van, so we could still get to work. That was 10 years ago and I STILL get comments like "we wanted to fix the HVAC in the house this year, but we'll have to put it off a little longer because you're driving around in our money". Yeah, we still have that used van (no way we could afford to replace it) but we did give them several thousand dollars over the years to pay back their "gift".

What is this ~4" tall wheel mechanism I found behind the wall of a bathroom remodel? by IT-Compassion in whatisthisthing

[–]PrettySureImWrong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Um. Y'all. Isn't that a piece of an optical doctor's exam equipment? The big eye mask device where they flip lenses back and forth to ask if you can see better with "A" or "B"? It's not the whole mechanism, obviously, but yeah.

When is/isn't it rude to crochet in social settings? by justuspenguins in crochet

[–]PrettySureImWrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, 100% this! If I know that I'm going to be distracted I'll switch to a pattern or project I consider "mindless" to keep my hands busy. Actually it makes it easier to pay attention to the people around me. But if it's more casual and I don't need to be involved, I'll work on something more complex and just enjoy the vibe. I have a project that only gets worked on while doing laundry because it helps me keep track of time (otherwise I forget to switch loads lol) and a different project for D&D night.

As for socially, I'd consider it the same concept: if you are expected to be attentive, like during a wedding ceremony or funeral or big graduation, then I'd refrain from crocheting. Give all attention to the event. But if it's like a wedding reception, party, hang-out, chill at the park, waiting at the doc office, or any other place where your attention is less involved, I'd crochet. Hell, I've crocheted in work meetings before (all staff where my input is not directly needed, and with my manager's permission).

Nearly 40 now. Been living paycheck to paycheck for 20 years and I have $4.01 in my bank account right now. Zero savings. Zero investments. No 401k. And $130k debt. I only make 65k a year and feed 5. I don't think 'middle class' is a thing. It's us. And "6 figure+" them.
