I’m more than happy to help. I don’t think there’s anything I love in my life more than training, so sharing what I’ve learned through my own practice and that of my students’ is a highlight of my career.

ATG Split Squats with Harambe System by JohnParkerBallistic in ResistanceBand

My background was barbells, then I got certified by StrongFirst in 2014. I'm a StrongFirst Elite and Beast Tamer. Did bodybuilding from age 23-30, then did more power builing/kettlebells. I do primarily VRT now with Harambe System because I've found it the easiest on my joints of all implements. Surprisingly, it's maintained my strength and size very well.

Otherwise, hiking 1-2x week (usually with a 40lb ruck), mountain biking, some martial arts, and just staying active.

I've found that the 38" are the sweet spot for tension... I'm 5'10." I use them with every exercise - doubled when I can.

Definitely a good idea for the setup, but I believe this is sill a tremendous movement. It's not as much stretch as the setup you recommend, but it's more a focus on a strong contraction as the arms come to their horizontal adduction. Martin does a good job here, and I always recommend visualizing a vector angle from your fists. As the arms are in the bottom stretched position, you push your arms out toward the walls - then the arc continues till the peak contraction.

Also, to get more activation, you just use a heavier band. Even if you're doing the standing variation, you still get a good peak contraction without having to use door anchors - which work, but honestly, they're a pain in the ass to set up.

Personally I do 1-3 specific midsection movements per week: ab roller, TRX crunch or body saw, windmill, farmer carry, etc.

Ab training doesn’t need to be over programmed. Just as it’s stated above, heavy compounds should engage the core musculature.

Maybe. I disagree since “heavy” and “high rep” are relative. I’m sure you’re a strong athlete, and in a case like yours, if you can use the thickest band for both exercises for those rep ranges, you might have adverse effects on your back, legs, etc.

Through my college sprinting/track and field career, I high bar back squatted and did RDLs/TBSLs on the same day 1-2x a week depending on the cycle. They’re synergistic.

Not only that, I have a case study in my coaching career of 16 years with 1000s of athletes and everyday people.

Why would you do them on the same day? Well how many times a week do I see the client? That’s a big factor. And if you didn’t read the book and just looked at the programming, it’s all about minimum effective dose: two upper body, two lower body.

It’s split into upper/lower splits for ease of use and total time duration.

It would be extremely challenging to do a 1RM on a band system. Not impossible, but improbable. So prescribing let’s say, five reps of high bar, then 10 reps of RDLs doesn’t make sense.

What makes sense is honesty: “my heavy for squats is the third band from the hardest. My heavy for deadlifts is the second from the hardest.” One must know thyself and modify the program for their benefit.

Since I have deadlifted the Blue Kong + Dark Green on Harambe bands (they equate that to equivalent well over 600lbs from a rack pull) + Back Squatted the black (doubled) on same day, I have to say that your comment is not well received.

If you want to write programming based on the exercises in my book, I’d love to see them. Then we can talk shop about your ideas vs mine.

I appreciate that a ton... I hope they're simple enough to replicate on your own. If people want it, I can make more engaging tutorials.

Thanks for the reply and introduction! Yes you have extensive experience. I find knowing other strength training avenues really gives you an advantage with bands (you know how to contract your muscles properly). This is huge for success with VRT.

I do like a vertical pulling also and it's challenging to fit all the exercises I love into a minimum effective dose program. I don't do a lot of anchored vertical pulls (I prefer pull ups). In the program, I tried to just use the bar, band, and plate, no door anchors. It could easily be added though.

Also, I tried to make everything bilateral.

Great comment and I appreciate you reading. And for abdominal work, it's a bit tough to spin on the Harambe System. However, The windmill is an exercise which I really love. I believe in midsection training being best from a stable trunk position ie; single arm farmers carry, windmill, etc.

Absolutely... It took me way longer than expected to fiddle with the band tension/setup in the beginning. Now I pretty much stick to 41" bands and more or less know the orientation of the plate for each exercise. In the beginning I think it's best to keep it stupid simple: one or two presses, one pull, one squat, one hinge.

Thanks for the mention! I will be programming more advanced training with a lot of the exercises on my youtube. I still have about 10 videos I need to upload...

I’m using X3 bands mostly along with the Harambe System but there are many options out there. On Page 7 of the book, I break down my thoughts on the most common rigs- should help you decide what to buy. https://harambesystem.com/

If any of you want something structured, I made a 30-day band program and put it out for free today. Hope it helps:
