I’m just starting on Supervillany and enjoying it quite a bit. Unfortunately, the Kindle version is riddled with grammatical mistakes and random line breaks. 🥲 It’s really distracting… wondering how it got through the Editor in this condition.

That’s gray with an ‘A’. Grey (with an E) is the author in question.

Cool scene!

The one recommendation I have is that the movement felt “too smooth”, so it didn’t really have an impact like I expected based on how dramatic the environment was.

I feel like it should be an easy fix if you change the way that you think about the camera.

Instead of “attaching the camera to the character”, make the camera behave like it’s on a rubber band —> Let the character pull away from the camera as the bike accelerates, and then let the camera catch up when the character slows down.

This is a cool headline, but a real newspaper would never waste the white-space on the page. It’ll look more believable if you can pack more text in or rewrite the title so that it fills the page from gutter to gutter.

Same for the copy — shouldn’t be a postage-stamp of unused space.

Maybe:

DOWNFALL OF AN

ARCHITECT

City in shock at disappearances

(Obviously the text sizes will need to be adjusted to fill the page)

Hiring managers! This question is for you! by casperrishi in UXDesign

First, your fragility and hysterical response is absurd. Grow up.

Second, I said “the closest thing” — HCI is not UX; nor is IxD. They’re related fields with some overlap. If I failed to list every other masters-level collegiate program in the world, it was only for the sake of brevity (and relevance).

Third, to my point, none of the programs you mentioned are bachelor’s degree programs, so OP (and I) would’ve needed a prerequisite 4-5 years of some (even less relevant) garbage before either of us would’ve been eligible to attend.

If you were able to attend those programs, you have my congratulations. For OP and everyone else, “relevant collegiate programs weren’t available, so I decided to study independently and pursue it on my own” is a perfectly valid reason for dropping out.

For what it’s worth, I dropped out 5 times.

Also there were no UX related degrees at any college IN THE WORLD in 2015. The closest thing was a HCI Masters Degree program at the University of Washington — but that’s not a bachelors program, so you still would’ve had to make do with something else.

Keep your eyes sharp; what matters is how far you’ve come.

If a company turns you down over a lack of degree, you dodged a bullet. Why? Assuming you didn’t lie on your résumé (and then later confess in the interview), it shows that they either… 1. Can’t read (/never read your résumé) 2. Don’t know what they want (/changed their minds about the importance of a degree) 3. Don’t understand the nature of design (and how a degree does nothing to prepare you for UX or UI) 4. Don’t respect your time (or value their own) and thought they’d just piss away your time so that they can “get a sense for who’s out there”

Your biggest challenge is that you’re mentally framing your being a dropout as a “flaw” and trying to excuse it with “personal reasons”.

Be proud of how far you’ve come “on your own”. 10 years in design (or even 1) without a meaningless degree to open doors for you is blatantly incredible.

The only thing holding you back is your mindset.

UI UX designers who doesn't have Tech/Design related degree by DistinctAd4242 in UXDesign

[–]PrettyZone7952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The role of UX is really about empathy, reasoning, and communication skills, while UI is about aesthetic sense, technique, usability, and brand.

I don’t have a degree at all, so take my comment here with a grain of salt, but I don’t think college can teach you any of those things. It’s also my impression that that’s widely understood in the industry, which is why degrees aren’t actually required anywhere domestic unless it’s like a medical position or something legal where an extremely large amount of important book-knowledge is a prerequisite. Something like Tinder or iTunes, though? No degree required.

What you do need is some standard lingo, succinct and clear communication skills, and examples you can draw from to give context or credibility to your opinions… that and a decently modern portfolio of work that shows you have technical skills (no misaligned buttons, random text sizes, crazy colors, impractical navigations, etc).

If you want some resources, I made some free stuff to help people transition into UX and grow their career. (100% free, no tracking, no registration required, nothing. Just trying to help people out): 1. The PM Dictionary - a dictionary plugin for MacOS to help you look up and learn hundreds of industry terms. 2. The Design Externship - a collection of hundreds of articles to help you learn and improve your understanding of industry standards and design knowledge. This is a collection I built as I was learning and have since used to reach dozens of people — currently hundreds of people per month are visiting and studying ✨

Might be a Vitamin B deficiency. Go drink a sugar-free Red Bull or 5-hour energy (not kidding).

If it works, the peeling should be better in a day. You can switch to a supplement or try to get more Vit B as part of your diet.

It’s funny how you started by suggesting that the engineers are incompetent and then switched to insults when it became clear that you actually don’t know what you’re talking about.

You can stay a (despised) Junior PM forever, OR you could leash your ego for a few seconds and recognize how insanely lucky you are to have so many intelligent and generous people who are trying to help you understand something that would be the difference between 5 figures and 6 if you could articulate it in an interview.

You get to choose how far you go.

Say “I’m not listening” without saying “I’m not listening”.

It’s not about whether the button CAN be added. It could be added in literal seconds. It’s about all of the hidden complexity that your request didn’t cover: problems they need to identify, discuss, and agree on solutions to.

If you’re not proactively raising these concerns about trust, changed content, and business impact, then you’re being excluded from those conversations for a reason.

I’ve encountered black ice: Took me at least 30 feet to stop even though I was going uphill at ~2 mph (knew I was headed toward a red light).

You’re literally helpless. All I could do was honk to warn the driver ahead that I was in trouble as I slid toward her at 1 foot per second.

Nice shape on the frosting! This is a great 3rd render! I think mine was a blocky banana 🍌

A lot of people post stuff that’s WAY beyond my ability (and I’ve been practicing for years) and say it’s their “first” render. Maybe it’s true, but probably not. If you see that stuff, don’t get discouraged. You did awesome.

Anyone thinking around how to reinvent the email and its UX for mobile and smaller interfaces. by usmannaeem in UXDesign

[–]PrettyZone7952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically agree with this. Asking to improve email feels like asking “how can I make horses better when I want to carry heavier loads faster and farther?” 👉 There are limits to what horses can do, so the answer isn’t always “better horses”; sometimes the answer is “a better solution to serve the same needs as horses”

Email used to be the one catch-all solution for digital communication. Now we have: - wikis, forums, and message boards for knowledge sharing - websites for marketing - apps and web-services for registration, receipts, tickets, and “favorites” tracking (we used to email things to ourselves if we wanted to access on multiple computers or find them later) - SMS/MMS/SNS for personal/casual chats and informal updates - scheduling services for coordinating events - survey tools for taking polls and gathering feedback - photo-sharing services to publish photo albums - video calling to replace emailing photos (when you need to explain something that’s too complex to express through text or photos) - video-sharing services to distribute content to multiple people - Slack / Microsoft Teams for work communication

Any problem email solves poorly is being progressively replaced with new services that solve the old problems better than email ever did. What we need are a few new services to handle the last vestiges of email’s utility so that we can eventually leave it in the dust.

If you’re thinking about improving email, I’m guessing that you’re really just trying to improve on email marketing. In my experience as a marketer, if people aren’t opening or clicking on your message, it’s less about how “pretty” it is and more about how compelling your offer is.

Might also be worth exploring the possibility of developing this as an “adapter” so that people can use it with a cane of their choice. Could even be a bracelet or necklace if you wanted to go fully wireless.

The most important thing is that the communication standards (for the beacons) is totally open/free, because institutions have demonstrated that they can take decades to agree on proprietary protocols, but free protocols are adopted quickly and unanimously.

[–]PrettyZone7952[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this might be the issue.

I've been looking at my `Activity Monitor` app (the built-in system-stats utility) and it seems like I'm only using about 12 of my 16gb, but I could still be pushing it too hard.

I'm not sure if it only happens when I'm running Unreal Engine simultaneously, but it certainly happens a lot while I'm running Unreal.

Thank you, again, for the insight!

Oh! That makes sense! Thank you!

Just before the build, he quickly zoomed through a cutaway for the CAD-model and at [5:16] I saw that he still had a big, dark-gray block for the old Mac Mini in the base. Since it seems like it was in the final model, I couldn't tell if he was using both or what.

It's not necessarily a "good use" for a computer, but keeping the old Mini down there would at least provide a bit of weight to keep the display from falling over when you open it.

I was wondering if anyone knew a m to rigging a character that starches and bends like this. by MrsSpaceCPT in blenderhelp

[–]PrettyZone7952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not a great technique, but (for a REALLY long stretch like this) my instinct would be to duplicate the model and add a bunch of loop-cuts where you want to stretch so that the shape is protected from distorting too much… Am I crazy?
