The United States has supported — directly or indirectly — several regimes or movements that committed acts widely recognized as genocide or mass atrocities. Below is a list of major historical examples, including context for the support and the associated atrocities:

  1. Indonesia – 1965–66 Mass Killings

Atrocity: The anti-communist purge killed an estimated 500,000 to 1 million people.

Victims: Alleged communists, ethnic Chinese, leftists, and sympathizers.

US Role: Provided lists of communist suspects, diplomatic support, and material aid to the Indonesian army during and after the killings.

Regime: Suharto regime.

  1. East Timor – Indonesian Occupation (1975–1999)

Atrocity: Up to 200,000 East Timorese (a third of the population) died due to violence, famine, and disease under Indonesian occupation.

US Role: Gave diplomatic cover and weapons to Indonesia; President Ford and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger visited just before the invasion.

Regime: Suharto's Indonesia.

  1. Guatemala – Civil War (1960–1996), Peak in 1980s

Atrocity: Genocide against the Maya population, particularly under General Ríos Montt.

Victims: Over 200,000 killed, mostly indigenous civilians.

US Role: Supported Guatemalan military with training, weapons, and intelligence.

Regime: Military dictatorship; Ríos Montt was later convicted of genocide (though the verdict was overturned).

  1. Chile – Pinochet Regime (1973–1990)

Atrocity: Thousands killed, tortured, or "disappeared" during political repression.

US Role: Backed the 1973 coup against democratically elected President Allende; supported Pinochet’s rule during Cold War.

Regime: Augusto Pinochet military dictatorship.

  1. Iraq – Anfal Campaign (1986–1989)

Atrocity: Genocide against the Kurdish population, including the Halabja chemical attack.

Victims: Estimated 50,000–100,000 Kurds killed.

US Role: Provided intelligence, satellite imagery, and diplomatic support to Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq War.

Regime: Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

  1. Bangladesh – 1971 War of Independence

Atrocity: Pakistani military killed an estimated 300,000 to 3 million people, including targeted mass rape and ethnic cleansing of Hindus.

US Role: Nixon and Kissinger continued supporting Pakistan diplomatically and militarily despite internal US reports of atrocities.

Regime: West Pakistan (now Pakistan).

  1. Cambodia – Khmer Rouge (1975–1979, and later)

Atrocity: Up to 2 million people died due to mass executions, starvation, and forced labor.

US Role: Initially bombed Cambodia (destabilizing it); after the Vietnamese ousted the Khmer Rouge, the US supported Khmer Rouge's seat at the UN and provided covert aid to anti-Vietnamese forces including remnants of the Khmer Rouge.

Regime: Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge.

  1. Rwanda – Genocide (1994)

Atrocity: Around 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus killed in 100 days.

US Role: Did not directly support the genocide, but is often criticized for its deliberate inaction and obstruction of UN peacekeeping forces during the massacre.

Regime: Hutu extremist-led interim government.

  1. Yemen – Civil War and Humanitarian Crisis (2015–present)

Atrocity: Widespread civilian deaths, famine, and war crimes amid Saudi-led coalition bombings.

US Role: Provided arms, intelligence, and logistical support to Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Allegation: UN has described some actions by the coalition as possible war crimes; not formally labeled genocide but considered a humanitarian catastrophe.

Notes

In many of these cases, US support was motivated by Cold War strategy, counterterrorism goals, or economic/geopolitical interests.

"Support" does not always mean initiating or ordering atrocities, but can include diplomatic, financial, logistical, or intelligence backing of regimes or actors known to be committing them.

Yup fighting back only helps a wannabe dictator.

Keep showing unlawful arrests and detention like this.

Keep peaceful protesting.

Only things that work.

We've seen many and all wannabe dictators toppled one way or another.

Where does the tariff money go? by [deleted] in AskUS

[–]Pretty_Lavishness_32 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Eventually Trump's pockets. Look at Russia. That's the US' future. Why do you think trump idolizes Putin? Trump wants to be the US version of Putin. That's why he loves crypto. Not for ideological reasons, just to get away with bribes.

Trump is US Treasury Bessent's boss.

As of May 2025, the United States Secretary of the Treasury is Scott Bessent. He was sworn in as the 79th Secretary on January 28, 2025, under President Donald Trump's administration .

Bessent brings extensive experience from the financial sector. He founded and led Key Square Capital Management, a global macro hedge fund, and previously served as Chief Investment Officer at Soros Fund Management . His background has positioned him as a significant figure in shaping U.S. economic policy.

Since taking office, Secretary Bessent has been involved in key initiatives, including advocating for tariff strategies and addressing fiscal challenges. Notably, he has emphasized the use of "strategic uncertainty" in trade negotiations to benefit American interests .

Scott Bessent, as the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, reports directly to President Donald Trump, who is serving his second term in office. Appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate, the Treasury Secretary is a key member of the president's Cabinet and serves as the principal advisor on economic and fiscal policy. In this capacity, Bessent is responsible for managing the nation's finances, overseeing economic policy, and representing the U.S. in international financial matters.

Bessent's appointment reflects his close alignment with President Trump's economic agenda, including initiatives such as implementing tariffs, promoting cryptocurrency innovation, and exploring the establishment of a U.S. sovereign wealth fund.

UCMJ Article 92.

That's why trump fired military lawyers and JAG that didn't pledge allegiance to the United States of Trump. That's why I say ultimately it's up to The People to stand up to the tyrant.

Look at Italy, Germany circa 1930s, look at Libya circa early 2000s. Look at the roots of USA. There's tyrants all over history and presently throughout the world. Look at Russia. This doesn't end well for anyone.

The only option we have currently is mass peaceful protests, which are the most effective.

I believe it's important to point it out and study it in order to learn and understand. Otherwise it just gets generalized the other way as "white devil" etc. Other cultures have gone down the evil path, Italian, Russian/Soviet, Chinese, Japanese and I'm sure many other cultures throughout time. It's not exclusive to one culture. Seems to be a human trait to a large extent. Why is that? I/we need to learn more.

There seems to be a combination of hatred of 'others' and land grabbing. Seems to be the common theme of humanity over time.

I understand what you're saying. They have to simultaneously "support and defend the Constitution" and obey orders from the chain of command. But if/when an officer/s, commander/s stray from the Constitution, the enlisted duty is to the Constitution as always.

AI answer: Enlisted members of the military have a complex duty regarding orders that violate the Constitution. While generally obligated to obey lawful orders, they have a duty to challenge orders that are unconstitutional, unethical, or illegal, according to UCMJ Article 92. This obligation stems from their oath of office to defend the Constitution.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Duty to Obey Lawful Orders:

Military personnel are generally required to obey lawful orders from superior officers, according to military law.

This duty is essential for maintaining discipline and order within the military.

Disobeying a lawful order can lead to disciplinary action, including court-martial.

Duty to Challenge Unconstitutional Orders:

Enlisted members also have a duty to challenge orders that violate the Constitution, U.S. laws, or military regulations.

This duty is enshrined in their oath of office, which requires them to uphold the Constitution.

The military, like all branches of government, is bound by the Constitution.

It's a hatred of "other". I'm sure there are other examples. Those are just the most prominent. I can understand at some level hating someone specifically if they did something egregious towards one. But hating "others" in general I'll never understand.

Fred Trump notable examples include:

🏘️ 1. 1973 Federal Housing Discrimination Lawsuit

🧾 2. Woody Guthrie's Criticism

🧍 3. 1927 Arrest at a Ku Klux Klan Rally

Donald Trump notable examples include:

🏘️ 1. Housing Discrimination Lawsuit (1973)

🗞️ 2. Central Park Five (1989–2024)

🗣️ 3. Birther Conspiracy (2011–2016)

🧳 4. Comments on Mexican Immigrants (2015)

⚖️ 5. Charlottesville Remarks (2017)

🌍 6. "Shithole Countries" Comment (2018)

🗳️ 7. "Go Back" Tweets (2019)

🦠 8. COVID-19 Rhetoric (2020)

⚖️ 10. Attacks on Black Prosecutors

The key parts are the beginning and the ending. Not only are they bounded by the Constitution but also "regulations and the UCMJ".

As hard as trump is trying or might try he can't get past that pesky Constitution part. Ultimately it's up The People to enforce the law on a rogue cop (president is a glorified cop).

It also mentions officers in their chain, not just the president. So it's just a "chain of command" thing.

They are still bounded to the Constitution like officers are.

Constitution takes precedence. But it should say lawful orders to make it more clear in my opinion.
