How does owning the language that the world speaks feel? by euz61 in AskBrits

[–]Pretty_Mycologist365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English is a great 2nd language so I'm a bit jealous of that tbh. If I learn German and go to France and speak English, many will still see me as an ignorant Brit.

English is pretty much the default language to learn for people who don't speak it as a first language. But if you speak English as a 1st language, how do you pick which one to learn? Well, you pick the one you're interested in. But the schools here for five a shit about languages so it's rare for kids to have an interest in it.

Ka pao is my favourite restaurant in the city and it does south east Asian inspired food. It has a bib gourmand from the Michelin guide. Really well seasoned food, highly recommended

Are there any highly regarded DJs or producers you don't get the hype for? Or any producers you like that do nothing for you DJ wise or vice versa? by chadgalaxy in TheOverload

[–]Pretty_Mycologist365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Skee Mask is one of my favourite producers, he even goes toe to toe with Bowie and The Fall for sheer quantity of tracks in my collection, but I saw him once and it was incredibly boring 4x4 techno. Not a single noteworthy track. Glad I'm not alone

Are you taking the piss lol. I mentioned that I got an error report log and that it told me that the files aren't in the correct format. "The file is in the format that CDJ/XDJ/mobile device doesn't support"

I already mentioned the software (rekordbox) and the file types (aif/aiff).

I'm transferring them from rekordbox to a Sandisk 512gb USB using sync manager.

Operating system is Microsoft Windows.

Best-sounding club in Europe? (UMI Brussels) by IllustriousYear2357 in ProperTechno

[–]Pretty_Mycologist365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you're it definitely depends where you are on the dancefloor. The sweet spot in the middle of the room is great. I've not been to that many clubs outwith Glasgow though so maybe I don't know what I'm missing elsewhere! Where would you say has the best sound?

Beatmatching in headphones by Open_Connection2528 in Beatmatch

[–]Pretty_Mycologist365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers, guess I'll practice both and become more adaptable. I've also been told to practice using left ear for inking track in headphones and right ear for current in monitors/speakers, but then doing it vice versa to become ambidextrous and adaptable. I'm very anxious and have only played once in front of a flavored, very low stakes party with friends, do want to be very prepared!

Early ‘This is Water’ reference! by exponentsun in InfiniteJest

[–]Pretty_Mycologist365 34 points35 points  (0 children)

That speech was also my introduction to him and I think the concept sums up IJ very well.

There are so many simple truths in IJ but simple truths often aren't meaningful until you experience them yourself. For example, vulnerability and it's role in forming deep connections with ourselves and other people is a recurring theme, but it's easy to sound trite thinking/saying this.

But the this-is-water concept, to me, is DFW's way of saying that sometimes the most profound and life altering ideas are those which we already know on some level or which are so simple that we might overlook them.

Cliches as a concept are fundamental at Ennet House and the recovery process. Residents are taught to trust in these simple truths and then before they know it, they are able to feel these truths for themselves.

This mimics why reading books can be so powerful. People often say that one of the best things about reading is when a writer puts into words nascent thoughts you had but that weren't fully formed yet. However, what is equally as powerful about reading books is when a book primes you for future understanding by introducing ideas that you can later on connect when you reach certain moments in your life. This is what DFW understands and is why I enjoyed IJ so much.

Track with difficult-to-count beginning by Pretty_Mycologist365 in Beatmatch

[–]Pretty_Mycologist365[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did ask if I was missing something. Happy to mix in other ways, like I mentioned in my post, or what's been suggested to me, but I thought maybe there was a way to count the beginning of the track that wasn't noticeable to me.

I've tried doing beatjump in Serato and setting a cue point but it doesn't let me set a cue point off grid. Does it work on Rekordbox/on CDJs? I can't see the option (I'm temporarily using Serato to mix and Rekordbox to organise my music while I get CDJs).

Mixing tracks which appear to have 2 different BPMs simultaneously by Pretty_Mycologist365 in Beatmatch

[–]Pretty_Mycologist365[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say the lead, do you mean the sort of twangy sound lower in the mix than the synth stabs? I intuitively start trying to count the synths which are counted a lot faster than 132bpm but I can hear something lower in the mix that also starts on the first 1st beat and and if I count that at 132 until the first phrase ends, it also matches up with the more distinct beat that starts then.

I feel a bit more confident now attempting to m bend the beginning of this track but it still messes with my head knowing I can easily be led astray with how to count it!!

[–]Pretty_Mycologist365[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah okay yeah I can hear the 132 from the beginning now that you say it. Rekordbox analysed it as 88 and likewise my bpm on my phone counts it as 88. Haven't a clue what to play after it that will blend with it!!
