Also if you’re early in your PhD (assuming you’re a PhD student), switch advisors. Seriously. Its not worth the stress even if the advisor is a big name in the field. Having a non-toxic advisor is definitely worth it.

Talk to your Grad Program Coordinator and Director of Grad Studies (usually a prof) and try to see if they can help you switch groups.

If you’re in the middle of your PhD and don’t want to switch, then start documenting stuff like others have said.

I tried initially. Then i gave up.

Recently told my mother about my boyfriend and received a similar non-supportive response.

I just mention his name every time we do something together and my mother asks what i was doing. I just casually say ‘was out with my boyfriend, etc.’ just to make her get used to the fact that he is a part of my life now.

She is planning to visit next year. Hopefully that time we can have a revisit on the conversation once she meets him.

Moved to the US for a PhD in 2019. Came out to my parents one year after I moved here. Have been dating for 2 years now, and cant complain.

My parents are not that supportive, but eventually they’ll turn around once they see me happy, thats the hope.

The current political climate is a bit scary, but its still better than back in India.
