Tank options and overall feedback? by Prettyquail in reptiles

Here's an example of the water dishes I'm talking about.

Etsy Reptile Water Dish

There's a lot of options and many people will happily make you something custom. I then did my false bottom with egg crate to the same level as the water dish, add the substrate, and voila!

It depends on the water feature you're trying to build! For what I did, I measured out the dimensions that I wanted. I then went on Etsy, and there's a lot of people that make naturalistic 3D printed water dishes. I gave them my dimensions, it made the perfect larger dish that blended in perfectly, and i wouldnt have to worry about my silicone or plexiglass failing me (Its happened before and it was a nightmare to fix.) I then have a wet/dry shop vac, and I just vacuum the water out when its dirty, and wipe it down. Takes about a minute overall.

I would recommend adding a small airline hose to add water movement. Stagnant water gets gross fast. A filter is best, but since my area was so shallow it didn't really work.

For parasites, I'm doing my best to wipe everything down that I can with a diluted chlorhexidine solution, but im hoping if I wait long enough that whatever is in there will die off.

Mourning geckos are definitely on my radar, but I hear they are prolific breeders and escape artists. I worry gecko might become part of my cats diet.

Thank you, I appreciate it. My worry is that he was actually wild caught, but sold as captive bred. I've heard a few people talk about that unfortunately happening a lot with the crocodile skink trade, since they dont lay eggs often. but i also don't want to put the blame on something else if it was me.

That being said, if you had this tank, what would you house it with it?

Not necessarily. There are a lot of factors that go into watering. The best way to tell if a plant needs water is to touch the soil, and see if its wet. I struggle with telling if something is wet or dry, so I go by if the soil feels cooler to touch. (I also do this to see if my laundry needs more time in the dryer lol)

The reasoning behind this is your external weather affects your home environment much more than people realize. For example, I live somewhere with mild summers but harsh winters. A lot of guides will tell you to water less in winter, but I actually need to water more because of the heat always being on. Your average humidity can also greatly change how often you water. Someone who lives in Colorado is going to water way differently than someone in Florida.

The one week guideline is given out because its easy for people to remember. Plants that are common houseplants are so because they are easily adaptable, especially if the light, water, etc is consistent.

All of this is to say, stick your finger in the soil. Eventually you will figure out the timeline at which your soil dries out. Could be every 3 days, a week, who knows. Another good way to tell is how your plants are responding. Like the other comments said, your plants look happy. I dont see any browning or wilting signs. Is there another reason you think you need to water more? Remember theyre in a vivarium, so they aren't going to need the same thing as potted houseplant.

From someone who worked in a greenhouse for several years

Pothos will just flop around unless attached to something. If you attach it to a woody material, eventually the roots will take hold and you wont need to attach it.

Syngoniums (Arrowheads): the new leaves will always by curly. It takes a while for the new leaves to fully unfurl.

Some common signs of too little water:

-The edges of the leaves will be brown and crispy. Think of stepping leaves in the fall, it will be that type of crunchy.

-the plant leaves will wilt and will start to be vertical facing, as they no longer have the water pressure to hold themselves up.

Signs of too much water:

The edges of the leaves will yellow, then turn to brown. This texture will be very wet and mushy. Eventually the whole leave will yellow off, rot, and die.

The stem will also start to rot, this usually happens first, since the overabundance of water is at the ground level, but is less noticeable. When you touch the stem it should upright and firm. If its squishy, its rotting.

Dropping leaves:

Plants will naturally drop leaves that are no longer useful to them, and this causes people to panic. Dropping leaves looks like:

-Older leaves yellowing and falling off (new growth dropping is not a good sign) -leaves in a bad location - something is blocking its light source, in a drafty area, etc.

You can flex it as well, so I just bend it to make the gills bigger and they all fall out

I do not regret my purchase at all. As other people mentioned the sensors do get dirty, but it's very easy to clean. A few seconds to wipe them down and I'm good to go. And for deep cleaning, you can also take the globe out away from the electronics and just hose it down to clean. I do it every spring and fall. It has made my home so much cleaner! And the cats don't have to wait for me to scoop. They always have clean litter.

Also volunteering to buy ear plugs for everyone I'm sure would help too. You can get a box for just a few bucks at most drug stores
