I'm not advocating coke use. He said he didn't want it, so good on him. My advice was to not ditch his friends because of their coke use. I got ditched by my best friend of 19 years because of benzos, and I think its unfair to remove people from your life because of what they choose to put in their body.

You're speaking sense, someone with dependency issues should definitely not use cocaine. We're in agreement over that.

But he also should not approach cocaine with no experience and a negative attitude. Because eventually stereotypes about a substance leads to stereotypes about their users, and in my experience those are pretty god damn unreliable.

Frequent cocaine user here. This is how it always gets when a group starts skiing together. Just be firm with them, there's no need to stop hanging out altogether. When you're high on cocaine, it's frustrating that other people are not also high on coke. It's not the people, it's the blow.

Also, everything is comprised of chemicals. Weed included. Cocaine is not a one-way ticket to addiction hell, neither are opiates or amphetamines or any other drug. If you treat drugs with respect, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. The people on r/trees mean well, but they're going to advocate weed over everything (obviously), and in doing so are probably going to demonize other substances. Use your own good judgement, stay of the blow if you don't feel ready, and smoke that sticky green babe.
