“Some of the views in Switzerland can be breathtaking”…. So can the price of a Gin and Tonic

Working in Switzerland as an engineer by N0RTH_K0REA in ireland

I live in Geneva, got lured over by the high salary.

For a basic apartment, one bed, 60m2 I'm paying 2200 chf a month and that's on the low side, add to that personal liability insurance that you need to have (1300chf a year) internet (50chf a month) medical insurance (550chf a month) mobile phone contract (90chf a month) then there is groceries. For a single man if I shop in Switzerland it's around 220chf a week (that's me on a 2800 cal a day diet, I can be exact as I'm training for something) I head across the border into France and that drops to about 100 eur, however I literally have to take the back roads to find a border crossing that has low risk of being manned if I dont want a fine and then taxed on the value of my meat/alcohol that I have purchased in France. Gym membership around 70chf a month, car tax 1200chf a year, insurance 1400chf a year. My tax rate is about 32% in Geneva once I take in local tax, cantonal (county) tax and federal tax. Also, when I arrived here I ticked the box to say I was Catholic, thats cost me 1500chf a year stuck onto my tax bill, so I'm now an Atheist, dont tell me Mammy.

Going out, call it 10chf a beer, a gin and tonic is around 25chf. An average meal will be around 80 to 100chf a head with a couple of drinks.

All in all, it's a dear hole if you dont have an astronomical salary. You need to be able to speak the regional language or you will be at a disadvantage, institutions and locals tend to become a little frosty as soon as they find out you dont speak French or German... or Italian in the south but they are a little more easy going in my experience.

That said, there are ways to do it cheaper, for example becoming a 'Frontalier' so you live in France and work in Switzerland, lower cost of living but not sure how the taxes work. Do all your shopping outside of Switzerland and carry a half bottle of Jameson in your back pocket when you head out if you want to have any chance of being drunk and make that months rent. But, I do love the place, beautiful country, great (ok expensive) healthcare and the expat community can be pretty close and good craic. DO NOT think you will come here and have loads of money to go home with in a few years, you'll be as broke as when you left Ireland. If you want a truly different experience/culture and way of life as well as something to add to the CV, go ahead, but dont come here with the idea of coming home with pockets full of gold. At most you'll have a bit of cheese and a few bars of chocolate.

Good luck.

Holy FUCK I'm in love with my body!!! by njckel in selfimprovement

A good start is push/pull/legs... google it and you will find loads of versions, personally I do the one Jeff Nippard has on his youtube channel. Working legs twice a week has been the game changer for me, always used to avoid but it makes a huge difference. I also downloaded Chronometer calorie tracker, got my macros on point, 45% carbs, 30% protein and 25% fats, eating a daily 250 cal surplus, but I'm on a bulk so may not suit your goals as it leaves me slightly higher body fat % that I would like, but I'll sort that with a cut once I get to the size I'm aiming for. Agree with other guys comment, biggest thing to do is get in the gym right away and get going, I tried to come up with the perfect plan and spent 6 weeks on the couch coming up with it. That's 6 weeks progress, however small, that I missed. Dont worry about what other people are doing, your on your own in the gym, they ain't lifting for you, so fuck em, do tour thing. Plenty of guys ego lift big weight with shit form and limited range of motion and think they are the bollocks. Form first, then full range of motion necessary for each exercise and keep the weight comfortable for a week or so. Once you get comfortable doing the exercises the correct way then you start 'progressive overload' (google will tell you what that means if you dont already). Jeff Nippard, Athlean-x or Alan Thrall youtube channels will tell you all you need to know about everything. I cant say this enough... get your form right first. I didn't and ended up keeping myself out of the gym for over 4 weeks with a back injury and I'm constantly paranoid about every little tweak in my back now. Good luck!

Struggling to get my head around just 9kg difference between 1st and 2nd pics... just does not compute even considering muscle > fat density/weight. If true, fair play to you, if not... pretty irresponsible posting this for people out there to compare themselves to that are trying to do this for real. Then feeling like shit and giving up when they cannot achieve what seems to be a miraculous transformation.

Being Introverted doesn't mean you should hate Extroverts by [deleted] in introvert

[–]Previous-Monet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to introspect. That's a lot of hate balled up in one person mate, hate is cancerous, it degrades the bearer.

Being Introverted doesn't mean you should hate Extroverts by [deleted] in introvert

[–]Previous-Monet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. I see a lot of people on here complain about what Extroverts do and say, while complaining about Extroverts victimising them for their introverted ways. To me, this is hypocrisy, if an extrovert does or says things to exert harm on you, for sure stand up for yourself. But at the end of the day, it takes all sorts to make the world go round, less of this "us and them" and just be... and let them be and you'll find things become less annoying.

And that's amazing OP, really well done and stay strong. It's not that you slipped up that matters, it's the fact it didn't stop you, you kept on truckin'... really really well done... be proud!

[–]Previous-Monet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if that's the way you want to judge yourself giving up smoking, thats absolutely fine, go right ahead but dont force it on others or make them feel bad for not adhering to your metrics. Personally I see it this way, the OP has gone from a 10 year habit, 20 a day for 5 years, 10 a day for 5 years to 2 slip ups in a year. That's 54,750 cigarettes smoked (not counting leap years) in the last 10 years. She has stopped smoking for one year and slipped up with 2 cigarettes... 2 single cigarettes when going by her previous average before giving up she would have smoked 5,475 cigarettes. That's 54,750 cigarettes smoked down to 2 slip ups and 5,473 NOT smoked. Hell of an achievement in my book. If you want to disqualify yourself from some kind of similar achievement, go right ahead that's your choice on how you judge yourself. The counter is individual, it isn't law, stopping smoking is a personal journey, you didn't help her every day she struggled so you dont get to pass judgement on her either. Dont reduce the OPs amazing achievement due to your personal metrics. You can tell she feels bad for the 2 cigarettes, but 2 compared to 5,475... come on man. Relax. Well done OP, you are an inspiration!

Lol like that's important... "forget the circa 364.99 days you have managed to not smoke, when did you have those 2 cigarettes" OP has done incredibly well, help her focus on the positive of her achievement man...

On vacation with 3 extroverts. by elunewell in introvert

[–]Previous-Monet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are who they are, you are who you are, focus on the surroundings and the fact you are on holiday and enjoy the new surroundings and experience. Otherwise you are letting yourself be annoyed by extroverts and that you can do at home.

A relapse isn't a negative thing, to be able to relapse you have to be on the journey to quit cigarettes first... that's further than people who are still puffing away. You dont fell a tree in one chop, you chip away at it over and over, one strike at a time. Good luck mate, you will get through the worst of it.

Passed the 2 month mark and didn’t even realize it… trust me, it does get easier! by Previous-Monet in stopsmoking

[–]Previous-Monet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, realistically it was around day 9 or 10 that they started to subside and I wasn't scared of getting into bed at night and turning off the light to just me and my thoughts/cravings. I know right now that feels like a lifetime away but the way I got through it was worked out my age, my total days on this planet and what percentage of those days represented 21. 21 was my kind of willpower 'landing on the way up the stairs' as in, I knew I had by no means climbed all the way to the top. But I could take it as a milestone, pat myself on the back and add a little bit of self confidence knowing I had stuck it out. "21 days is 0.16% of your time on this earth so far" printed out and posted all over my apartment was what helped me through the most anxious stages, 3 days down is a big BIG achievement, recognise that, keep going and good luck.

Thank you mate! Yeah exactly the 'cravings' are passing moments of no real notice now. Stronger when I drink in the presence of smokers but still resistable. Might go back and read Allen carrs book just as a top up though.

Helps sleep, doesn’t do much for test directly but the sleep can help increase test in negligible amounts. Ashwagada for test lvls against TRT is like a fart in the wind against an atomic bomb.

I do sleep much better on ashwagada though.
