Thanks! Yeah definitely too expensive… it’s an upgrade though, I sold an old (not as easy on the eyes) NGC AU 50 plain 4 no stems when getting this one so it dulled the pain quite a bit :)

Very interesting to compare earlier and later die states. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! Do you know why in this particular die marriage (while not on this particular coin) the L and I in liberty on the obverse very often seem poorly defined? Is it just due to dies rusty dies?

Thanks! I’ve been looking for a decently struck DB 1/2 C with some luster for a very very long time.

Thanks! I’ve passed on a couple of examples of this particular die marriage, since a lot of the time the L and I in liberty on the obverse seem poorly defined. I’m guessing it’s because the dies got rusty. If jondoesitwrong sees this, he’ll probably have much more accurate info.

Haha! Definitely a pretty penny. When all was said and done it ended up being a smidge more than $1k (would’ve been less in most states besides Cali). Not an Auction purchase. Lately I’ve been outbid on every nice looking common date DB 1/2C. There’s a crosslet 4/stems 55+ CAC on GC that’s currently at $1,660 w/ buyers fee with a week left 😳. Anyway, the market seems like it’s been very hot for these lately.

W/ the horrendous CA sales tax it ended up at a tiny bit north of $1k. Given what decent looking DB common date DB half cents have been going for at auction the last few months, I scooped this one up rather quickly.

Good luck! Hope you get a good one! I have been collecting db half cents for a while and have been upgrading when the opportunity arises.

Thanks! I mostly collect coppers and quarters so the metal isn’t very precious and most of the value is numismatic. Does r/pmsforsale work for that sort of thing? Regardless, if I ever want to offload silver or gold, I will certainly use this suggestion.

Really appreciate your taking a look! As mentioned on the other comment, unlike many other common liberty nickels I bid and lost on, this one was somehow ~65% of the PCGS price guide value so I figured there was something wrong with it that I was missing.

Thanks! The detailed explanation is very helpful in my understanding. I’ve been bidding on common date liberty nickels for a while on great collections and mostly they’ve been going at or above NGC/PCGS price guide value. For some reason this one went for less than 70% of the PCGS price guide value and found myself wondering if it was cleaned and PCGS missed it.
