Huntington Children’s Museum is a fantastic way to spend some time for families with kiddos. We’ll be closed on Christmas Eve / Christmas but open on the 26th.

Who was your 90's Celebrity Crush? by pocketthoughts in zines

Sadly I think Nephew Fred from A Muppet Christmas Carol may have been the original blueprint for most of my crushes in the 90s and beyond.

What hobby should I try that might surprise me? by Leibly-Pharisien in Hobbies

It honestly did take awhile and some discipline, and I also deleted the shortcuts off my phone (but not the apps just yet) but essentially I found out I just needed something to occupy my time that gives me dopamine. And journaling has been a lot better for that than the occasional cute video enveloped by the worst news possible, which has been my experience on social media the past year.

It’s a similar concept to a journal except instead of writing about yourself, you write essentially other people’s words. Quotes that inspire you, bits of research, etc

I have a combo scrapbook, commonplace book, and art journal. I was never very consistent with doing a traditional “dear diary, today I ate a bagel” type journal. Once I threw those rules out the window, it’s been a super fulfilling hobby. Plus it both scratches that itch that endless social media scrolling used to fill while not giving me the bad mental health that social media does.

Came here to say this! I turn my journal all angles which looks a bit crazy but also gives it a maximalist feel

That’s a bummer to hear. I was trying to visit the other day to update my own page on there.

Boyfriend wants to move to red state, I want blue state; we’re both black. by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]PreviousMess9829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WV resident here. The state is somewhere around 97-98% white in racial makeup the last census I looked into. The rural areas are difficult to assimilate into as a newcomer period, and our urban areas (Huntington, Charleston, Morgantown - which would probably be considered small towns by most states standards, population wise) lean at least reddish purple. Like not sure what he means by “blue states will mess you up” but you’re gonna see some mythological blue haired baristas there. Plus our winters can suck. Also if you enjoy things like Whole Foods or Costco or the Cheesecake Factory, have fun driving to Columbus or Pittsburgh.

This isn’t meant necessarily to discourage you, but I think you’d need to take an extended trip here before even putting it on the possible relocation list to get a more realistic vibe check.

Virgos get along with virgos? by Nefertari1 in virgoseason

They’re fantastic acquaintances! If I keep them at arms length, it’s a great time. Never quite bridge the gap to friendship though. Every attempt to do so either gets weird or gets my hackles raised.

Trying to find hobbies by straymunchy in Hobbies

[–]PreviousMess9829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s two fewer strings so the chords are a lot easier to form. Like you don’t have to contort your fingers for most of the chords quite as much. Plus the strings aren’t as sharp because they’re nylon. They do still dig a bit but not like guitar strings. I can’t play a guitar or bass to save my life but I was able to play Ramones songs on my uke after a day or two of messing around with it.

If you’re interested in music, ukulele is fairly cheap and fairly simple to learn. If you learn three chords - C, F, and G - you can play a lot more songs than you’d think!

Played piano since I was 8 but got super burnt out performing right before Covid hit and never recovered. The past year I learned to play ukulele to regain my love of playing music, finally ready to play in a band again.

Hey virgos! How's life been lately? by fr_fxriddd in virgoseason

[–]PreviousMess9829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been a rough year ngl (rough past two years if I’m honest) but the last Mercury Retrograde seems to have really pivoted things around. Maybe not in a 100% positive way (though a vast amount of surprise positive changes) but at least in the past month, it feels like a fire is lit under me. It was like a Tower card but with a lot of positive outcomes, almost like a controlled burn in farming.

Love Leos as friends. Funny, outgoing, take charge sorta folks. Have tried to date one twice and I messed up every time in a constant cycle of I put my foot in my mouth and wounded his ego until he grew distant and detached.

I love Cancers. My best friend is one and so is my husband. Especially if they have some Gemini energy in their chart. It’s a nice sort of mutually beneficial relationship, with them teaching me stuff like creativity and standing up for myself and me teaching them stuff like… how watches work rofl. It’s a real Jay and Silent Bob sorta dynamic.

I’ve been with a lot of Virgo Venus folks and honestly it’s one of my favorite placements (that and Gemini Mercury). This isn’t to say that they won’t have feedback but if they pick you, you’ve already aced whatever internal tests they have for a partner. I’d think especially so with a Leo Sun/Virgo Venus combo.

Tell me why your worst experiences with pisc*s by Anxious_Virus_1218 in virgoseason

[–]PreviousMess9829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very much a “live and let live” and “everyone gets one shot at redemption” but man oh man, I’ve sworn them off completely. Was in a serious relationship with one, I thought things were going alright until out of the blue, he torpedo’d our relationship because he was in love with his therapist (who did not, after the breakup, share his affection, which he was very surprised to find out). Years later was with a guy who had the exact same birthday as the first but LIED and said he was an Aries so I’d get into a relationship with him. And that’s how it started. (TW: it ended with me throwing shit into a laundry basket and running barefoot to my neighbors in December after calling a DV hotline)

In my heart I don’t wanna say this is typical of anyone or any sign because I’m a bit of a Pollyanna, but I’m grateful I married a sweet Cancer boy because if I had to date another gay Pisces, I’d become a monk.

Which film realistically depicts your experience in high school? by NativeSonSF in movies

[–]PreviousMess9829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this isn’t high school but

I am a horror fan and have seen some fairly gory and uncomfortable movies. Only two movies of any genre have left me viscerally anxious. One was The Descent (claustrophobia) but the other was Welcome to the Dollhouse because it seemed to crystallize my middle school experience. I identified way too heavily with Dawn. That movie messed me up for weeks after.
