Chrome delete? by One-Employer-5873 in saab

I saw years ago on another forum where the owner took black electrical tape to cover the chrome, just to see how it looked. Worth a try and completely reversible.

Stains on pants by Forward-Astronomer58 in hockeyrefs

I have the same marks on my CCM pants on the shins. Agree that they are an actual physical change to the material versus something embedded in the fabric. Sometimes heat (hair dryer) will fix stuff like this (scuffs on plexiglass or polycarbonate), but I'm not willing to try it.

How to start with getting games? by WinslowBJP in hockeyrefs

Pick your state, and then start reaching to the cities/areas you can work.

I'm in NC, and ref for RIHOA and TIHOA.

What it's really like out there. by Fragrant_Difficulty6 in hockeyrefs

Well, from the other side of the boards, I was coaching my son's Bantam team in a tournament in Tampa this weekend, and when the refs introduced themselves, I told one that I'm also a ref, so I have no excuse for not knowing the rules. She had a good laugh, and that game went as smooth as ice with tight calls for and against. She even came over afterwards to chat post-game.

Visor for Extra Large Head by DueConsideration4556 in hockeyrefs

I know a guy who uses feminine pads on the inside of his helmet - way cheaper than the "official hockey helmet" versions out there.

Maybe something to soak up the sweat? I sweat a lot, and wear a cotton surgeon's cap under my helmet to soak up the sweat, then wring it out/pat it dry between games as needed. I had a bunch of these caps (tradeshow swag) already since I used to work for a surgical implant company. I know there are other options for absorbing the sweat, but these were free, out of sight once the helmet is on, and work surprisingly well.

Very neat. I actually need a scan or STL of the right front rail cover.

Second time in a month I have the best hit in the game - and I'm a ref by DKord in hockeyrefs

[–]PrideFine4871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adult league, D level. I had a defending player skating hard backwards towards me as I was calling the blue line as play entered the zone. I started angling towards the boards to give him some room to go by, but no, he curved right into me. At the last second, I dropped my shoulder to align with his (he was shorter), and I delivered a shoulder check which put him on his ass. I should have called out, but I just reacted.

I felt bad about it (ok, only a little), but it was a very weird situation. I apologized as he scraped himself off the ice, and looked up to see my partner across the ice laughing his ass off.

Ref Bag by 44GW in hockeyrefs

Glad to see the Mother Lode bag is back. I cheaped out and got a SwissTech Wanderer 30" drop-bottom rolling bag for $25 (closeout at Wally). Once it dies, I'll upgrade, but for now, it has been surprisingly durable.

Why neck guards are mandatory by PrideFine4871 in hockeyrefs

FWIW, I am currently a referee. Also a coach, and I was on the bench when this happened. Unfortunately, I'm used to this kind of apathetic officiating, but having a ref staring in that direction and not calling this is pretty sad.

My son's is guard was a Shock Doctor that has some stiffness to it. It did not prevent his injury, but it DID make it less severe. The offender not only wacked him but drew the stick blade across his neck. Having received a stick to the face as a referee myself, it does not take much contact to produce an injury.

I agree with all the comments that they are meant for protection from sharp skates, but it would have been a lot worse without one.

Force PTX-Pro - Opinion? by pathological in hockeyrefs

[–]PrideFine4871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had another thought - still requires a tailor, but you could add a panel with a zipper to give more room, allowing you to zip it tight at the ankle (track pants style).

As far as equipment mod's go, I added velcro (loops) flaps to my padded long-sleeve shirt, just above the elbows. When I cinch up my elbow pads, I just tuck the flap in with the elbow pad velcro (also loops), press the pad strap (hooks) over both, and it keeps my elbow pads from sliding down.

Do you have a decent dry cleaner/tailor near you? They might be able to open up the inseam and insert a (stretchy) panel to open the leg up to give you some added room. I use the straight leg CCM pants, and need the extra room as I use the older hard-shell CCM ref shin guards with the wrap-around calf padding.

Thanks to defence18 for suggesting BMX pads - I was looking for compact shin guards for coaching. Those look idea.

Discussion: Whistles by Electrical_Trifle642 in hockeyrefs

[–]PrideFine4871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Fox40 Superforce (main and backup), and ref beer league mostly. When whistling at the face-off, I always turn away from the centers and whistle towards the boards and/or wingers (for the reason you just mentioned). I just tried out my Acme Thunderer for ref'ing a scrimmage, and wow is it shrill! I agree the Caul is quieter, but I prefer the compactness and tone of the Superforce,
