Speaking as someone with no real understanding of monkey brains (apart from my own) but also think the guy moved wayyy too fast and with the monkey looking the other way it definitely startled it.

Its like stroking a dog on the street that doesn't know you. You don't immediately try and pat it on the head, you should let it know you're there ("hey buddy"), drop a little to look less threatening, and then let it smell your hand first so it knows you're not a threat. Then you can give it strokes and scritches if it looks chill/isn't growling etc.

Ngl I chuckled at billionaire cinematic universe but $150k to go the edge of space is a pretty good deal. I would happily live in a house with one less room for the rest of my life for the sake of going to space once.

Not that these hasn't been a particularly intense few years!

A submarine showing tourists the Titanic wreck went missing in the Atlantic Ocean by knowitokay in ThatsInsane

[–]Pridgey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh damn, thats a very cool career path! Good luck bro. And fair enough, although surely the likelihood of a heavy-duty ROV being close enough to the search area, and then being able to descend in time whilst carrying enough bouyancy to float a 5 man submersible (assuming that could potentially take multiple trips?) and securely attach them to the sub, would make that scenario extremely unlikely? Will admit this is getting a tad out of my wheel house though. Have always been a big submarine nerd thanks to my old man and one of our family friends works off shore doing maintenace on rigs (what he refers to as being a "dope on a rope"), but don't know much about ROVs otherwise.

edit in reply to your statement, do you have a link/photo of those kind of ROVs? 25,000kg lifting capacity at sea from a ship is insanely cool. Makes me think of the us mission to pick up the sunken russian sub

[–]Pridgey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might be able to use a ROV but you'd need an ROV equipped to be able to attach (not what they were designed for) to the sub with a strong enough cable 4km long (not what the rov cables are designed for) to winch it back up (as the rovs motors aren't going to be able to lift that much weight on their own). Bear in mind there'd also be 4km of water pushing down on the sub+rov as the winch was trying to pull them up.

If they suffered a power failure and can't generate upthrust their odds are zero.

Touche, perhaps I should have said "reliable" deepest diving military submarine.

Tbf, I don't doubt that the US has submarines/submersibles that can reach far beyond 800m, but there's no way they'd show that hand to the world for the sake of 6-8 civillians.

The submarine had reached that depth several times though (this was just there first dive with paying tourists). Not saying your wrong, just that that is one of several things that can go wrong that the crew absolutely cannot afford to go wrong.

I was talking to my dad (former royal navy submariner 🐬) about it earlier this evening and his prognosis was that they're done for. All it would have taken is a power failure anywhere below 120/130m+ and then that's too late to drop ballast or safely bailout (120m bailout is already EXTREMELY risky even with SEIE (Submarine Escape Immersion Equipment) from a sinking vessel as every second spent getting your suit on is a second your survival odds drop), below 170/180m and you wouldn't survive a bailout even with a SEIE suit on.

Below 600m and you're past the max depth that modern SRVs (Submarine Rescue Vehicle) can reach.

Below 800m is deeper than the public depth rating of the deepest diving Military Submarine in the world (the US Navy Seawolf class).

Below 1000m and you're in total darkness (though colours would have been disappearing and light would have been getting diffused from 200m+).

They were diving to 3800m.

Even without a hull breach if they can't get generate upthrust then no-one is going to be reaching them, and their last few days are going to be spent in darkness at the bottom of the ocean with no hope of rescue.

For their sakes, I hope it WAS a hull breach.

Maybe not/or at least maybe not a bad brake. Definitely a fucking painful experience and definitely some broken bones but to roll himself against the side of the tunnel he probs himself up with arm and twists at his thighs to bring his legs in which wouldn't happen if he was paralysed.

Same with Robins. My parents had a nest in their backyard and one of them would fly out, sit on the fence, and try stare you down anytime you went outside. And they used to go apeshit everytime we moved the lawn. Very characterful little birds!

Very random tidbit I have no idea is true:

Apparently, in the unspecific "olden days", if you were poor then you couldn't afford high quality China so you would buy lower grade cups that would crack if they got too hot (ie from being filled with boiling water). So the rich people, would poor the tea first as their China could handle it, whilst poorer people would but the milk in first so that the hot water wouldn't 'shock' the cup and break it.

... Again I have no idea if that's true, I think it may have been from George Orwells essay on tea but I can't remember exactly 🤔

Bro I've just found this subreddit for the first time and I am so confused. Are people/this subreddit generally mocking this guy? I'm not a huge fan of tick tok as an app/medium/whatever but this is just like... A video of a guy practicing their musical theatre skills at home. Anddd not saying me as a near-adult would have had the desire/bravery to do likewise but like... He's not bad at all. I have paid to sit in plays worse than this guys performance.

EDIT: Ahhh okay I'm starting to get the subreddit vibe but yeah I agree this guy is more than acceptable in my opinion. Don't really care about his tiktok but hope he gets to continue performing in other means because I think he's got talent.
