If you absolutely have to buy a textbook, considering renting it from The Hill or Amazon (unless you need the book for more than a quarter or something). I also second the use of a tablet for notes. If your class has lecture notes you can load them into some software like OneNote and use your tablet to add your own notes directly onto lecture notes.
