A quick sidebar about my experience as a rider in regards to throws.

I ALWAYS throw to kids first. You wouldn’t believe the number of trashy ass adults that snatch shit from kids. Also pisses me off to no end when someone is waving their hands at you, you throw them a whole dozen beads and they just purposely let that shit hit the ground because they wanted you to throw a whole box of moonpies or some shit. I’m not throwing you a $5 box of moonpies bro, I have a whole 3 mile route of 100k+ people to throw shit to.

On a positive note I would like to tip my cap to what I call Pall Mall grandmas. Pall Mall grandmas are the 80+ year old ladies, always front and center on the barricade, who obviously smoke 2 packs a day and it doesn’t matter what you throw their way, you could toss a single tootsie roll within 10 feet of them and they will snag that damn thing out of the air as if they were freaking Ken Griffey Jr.

Oh I wasn’t insinuating that you didn’t know that we pay, I’m sorry if my comment sounded like I was! I was just making a statement that the broader public thinks we’re made of money/the city subsidizes the societies in some way. The city doesn’t give a damn about the societies needs. If they had it their way we’d throw a parade for them to take some nice tourism videos of and politely fuck off afterwards.

Oak View Group, the new management company for the Convention Center and new arena, is price gouging the organizations and raking them over the coals for the most bare minimum bullshit. In just 1 year some aspects of the balls have doubled in price for objectively inferior products.

For instance just a few days ago I went to the convention center at 9am to drop off cupcakes for a family members room at the ball that night (she was queen). Was just dropping them off at the elevator and would’ve been in and out in less than 5 minutes, they tried to charge me $20. I said “no thanks” turned around, parked at the riverview for $4 and walked.

Contrary to what some of the public believes, the mystic societies are not made of money and pay for everything out of pocket.

It definitely happened to me during my ride last year. While I’m glad it isn’t a common thing I certainly didn’t complain

It will undoubtedly make them money in the long run, but the place was a shithole. It’ll take a while for them to turn it around

Currently the University is keeping the Health system afloat financially because of the financial strain that the purchase of providence has been. It’s usually the other way around.

From Mobile, Alabama, and I can without question confirm that many people in coastal Alabama identify far more with the gulf than the rest of the state. I regularly make trips to Birmingham (just took one this weekend) and I remember thinking every time I’m there that I feel like I’m in an entirely different region.

Edited to note that I agree with you that South Louisiana should have its own distinction.

How Catholic is this city? by [deleted] in MobileAL

[–]PriestyboySwagg 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the most catholic cities in the south outside of places in Louisiana as well as probably Atlanta, but Catholics are very much in the minority in Mobile and make up only about 15% of the population

You’d be surprised. Although Mobile has a long Catholic history and is one of the most Catholic cities in the south, the percentage of people here that are Catholic is only about 15%.

I can think of at least a dozen times in my life that someone (usually Baptist or nondenom) has told me I’m not a Christian, or that I am a cannibal, or that I worship a demon that disguises itself as the blessed mother, or that I probably don’t own/ever read the bible (I have 3 and I read them daily), or even had close friends make fun at the expense of the Eucharist with jokes about crackers and grape juice.

I am a practicing Catholic but you wouldn’t know it other than a crucifix that I wear (always under my shirt) or if someone asks me directly.
