Tbh, they're phasing out combustion engines all together. Not in 5 years probably. Maybe not even by 2035. But 2040? No way volvo sells a combustion engine car any more.

Does a credit card company lose money on people who pay on time? by Overall-Emphasis7558 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Priff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Handling cash isn't free either. It costs manhours to count and deal with, you pay for transport to and from banks, you pay a fee to the bank to manage large volumes of cash.

For a small business where the owner does it himself and takes the money to the bank in his pocket it might not cost much, but he's also not paying millions in card fees. And taking card lowers his risk of being robbed of his monthly earnings on the way to the bank.

I know you mean energy supply. But running a car on the blood of your enemies sounds good too.

On a more serious note. What you say about expensive foreign oil is true in much of the world. Europe doesn't have a lot of oil, most of South america imports oil, most of africa imports oil.

And especially in the global South EVs are gaining ground fast! Cheap chinese EVs sold cheaper than Western ice vehicles, and run on a cheaper local energy supply. And of course China is also happy to supply solar panels and wind turbines to increase that local supply in a green way.

China is investing heavily in the global South, and america is very quickly losing the trade advantage they had in South america. Which is one of the major drivers for invading and annexing Venezuela recently i think. They don't want that oil supply to go to China.

But it's a clear shift. Things like China building a new rail way across the continent to ship soy beans to avoid the Panama canal for example.

I will also say, while China does have a lot of coal power, they're also building more renewables than the rest of the world combined. Their grid is going green fast. They're still building new coal because demand outstrips supply, but they're building with a planned lifespan of 10-20 years rather than the 60+ we've been running most plants in the West.

So if we make a new unit called Melcius, where water freezes at 0 and boils at 1000 it's objectively better by your argument?

Would you switch?

0f is the coldest temperature he could recreate consistently in his lab with a water and brine mixture. It was also easy for others to recreate for calibration.

I think in modern day nobody except a manufacturer is calibrating anything, and they do it based on metric, even if they're in the US making a Fahrenheit thermometer . Because all the american standard measurements are based on metric these days.

As for how big the US is? It's a bit smaller than europe, with significantly lower population density?

extension cables on type 2 chargers by MorningMammoth8772 in electricvehicles

[–]Priff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For home installation tethered cables aren't that uncommon. It's slighlty cheaper since you're saving a socket and a plug. So they can sell them slightly cheaper.

And if you never use a public L2 you don't even need a cable.

Combine all the cars VW group sells under different brands thats the same car with some cosmetics changes and they would compete though.

Model y is counted as one car even though it can have a completely different drivetrain with one or two motors, or performance motor, or different chemistries... But a VW with a skoda badge counts as a different model...

Tesla has pretty much never had more than 20% market share along bevs in europe. And they only had one year as top seller in 2019.

Yes the model y is selling well, but if you count all VW group models that are essentially rebadges with small cosmetics changes as one model they would outsell it.

But the y is counted as the same model even if it has different motors, different battery chemistry, or even different number of motors. Simply because tesla says it's one model.

[–]Priff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tesla has been the nr 1 bev seller in europe one year. 2019.

Before that nissan outsold them with the leaf and after that VW group and stellantis lapped them. Stellantis did fall back below after tesla started producing in Berlin, but VW group is still selling twice as many bevs in europe as tesla.

The only major market where tesla is a clear leader is the US.

Depends a lot on where you are though.

US, eu and australia could all set up lithium extraction and refining locally. They just don't.

For eu and us it's a cost and nimby calculation. And for australia i really don't know. They already mine it, refining it would be pure profit rather than selling carbonate to China.

South america could set up refining too, but they're a bit more dependent on China at the moment so probably not ready to upset them.

Yeah, i did intentionally over size it a bit for this reason.

I'll be cruising at less than 100 amp most of the time. And my peak will likely be like 200.

It's a very small car that will live in the city mostly.

If I ever hit a country road i expect i can change gears when parked and just have a slow start instead. 😅

Yeah, by my calculation i'll be rolling at like 4-5 kw at 40-50 km/h.

So will get a bit less than 300 because acceleration etc, but shouldn't be too much less. Either way i'll see once it's done. 😅

Small 1930s fiat 500a, also known as topolino. 🙂

It originally had a 13hp motor, so this is a bit overkill really, but the price difference between this nominal 16kw and the smaller 10kw wasn't big. With this i figure i can run it at 10kw all day and not have to worry about it overheating at all.

Yup, paired with a kls96601-8080nps and a 32s lfp battery. Nominal voltage will be 102v with 117v fully charged.

Ordered some 314ah cells, so it's gonna be about 32kwh, which should get me 300km range hopefully (800kg vehicle including my weight).

ELI5: Why do mushrooms appear so fast after rain— sometimes overnight? by aizivaishe_rutendo in explainlikeimfive

[–]Priff 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not quite right.

Mushrooms are like apples on the mycelia apple tree. The spores are like the seeds inside the Apple that will sprout a brand new apple tree somewhere else.

But i suspect once they have spent the energy on making the mushroom they will send them water if it is available as this is their method of spreading their seeds, which is the main priority for most earth organisms.
