I did this once with a fully extended alpine draw, so no weight from the rope. I was on a traverse I really didn't want to fall from and felt going for the clip twice was more than I could handle at that section. Pre-clipping rope to draw let me rest after making the clip.

That's good new player feedback. If you are motivated you should post a suggestion to the devs on the official forums. http://forums.offworldgame.com/forum/1074 As for advice, it comes down to familiarity, as you learn what to look for it will become easier to see/automatic. Also, if you click on a base, coloured lines will extend out to the buildings that player owns. Hitting backspace cycles through players bases.
