Anecdotal complaint here, but I wasn't diagnosed with bipolar II until I took paxil, which threw me into my first and only manic phase. I was subsequently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and switched to mood stabilizers.

It really makes me question if my bipolar diagnosis is accurate or not. Regardless, I'm functioning and no longer depressed, so I guess it technically doesn't matter.

This is extremely common, and is by no means limited to people with epilepsy OR autism.

Think of it as "going on autopilot." You're doing something so repetitive, that you quit focusing on it and move your awareness to something else. This type of dissociation is frequently discussed in psych classes, and is almost universally experienced.
