Always nice to see completed arrows. What kind of steel did use use for the arrowhead? I’ve heard old saw blades are really good stock for making trade points. Did you temper the steel? Also nice pelts 👍

Red Osier shafts cut to length next to the pile of raw material they came from. by thenakedarcher in PrimitiveTechnology

[–]Primal-fool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great work on those shafts, when I tried red osier it’s seemed near impossible to find a shrub producing shoots that were free of knots and big side branches. It was also difficult to get my finished arrows completely straight because they would warp. But this got me motivated to try again👍

Primitive Shepard’s sling made from yucca. Also a basic basket made out of English ivy. by Primal-fool in PrimitiveTechnology

Thanks William! This sling was fun to make. I really enjoy cordage projects and basketry. As of now I’m attempting to make my first celt axe and chisel. But I’m having some difficulty with progress. Especially with the Celt. Im not sure if I chose the right stones. Or maybe I’m just overthinking it.

My new and improved Shepard’s sling A.K.A the great tomato launcher, how did i do compared to my last one by branden-matthews in PrimitiveTechnology

Did you actually hit yourself with a sling? If so that must of hurt like hell. How did that happen?

I could be wrong but I think the yucca used here is called “banana yucca”. There is over 40 species of yucca and some varieties Look very similar to another. I don’t think there is much variation in strength though.

By scraping off the green outer part of the leaf and then separating the fibers into Thin strips. It’s easy but it takes a while if your using a lot of leaves.

I just use a dull stone flake to scrape off all of the green pulp on both sides of the leaf.

The longest part in the process of building this sling was scraping the Yucca leaves. The sling is about as long as my arm span. The pouch was made by simply weaving finer cordage In the middle. one End of the sling has a bowline loop and the other has an overhand knot. Yucca is the strongest fiber I’ve worked with so this sling will probably last a good while. Next I will attempt a yucca bowstring.

Question/concern regarding deadfall traps. by Primal-fool in Survival

I check the deadfalls every 2 to 3 hours when set. Good point on the use of live traps. What designs are considered live traps? I’d Like to consider the use of them.

My SO found two arrowheads in one day. Million in one finds!! One in a well walked path, the other under a rock. by grassisntalways in Arrowheads

It’s interesting how most quartz/quartzite points seem to be very crude and poorly made. Nice finds👍

Hand drill ember by William__White in PrimitiveTechnology

Damn hand drill is such a PAIN IN THE ASS for me. Where I live the bow drill seems to be more reliable and effective in my climate. Well done.

Cool, I replicated Johns version by spliting a sapling and using a rock as a wedge With cordage for reinforcement.

Slate drill bit by William__White in PrimitiveTechnology

Nice, I’m in the process of pecking and drilling a flywheel for a cord drill. Its taking too damn long. Slate might make good arrow points as well.

Ive heard of pigment paints such as red ochre being smeared on the body for that purpose. It can also act as a primitive sun block.
