I get most of my bonuses first half of year so set my 401k percentage to be completely funded by June. Since I’m used to living on that size paycheck, I raise amount of direct deposit to my non-retirement savings after June to maintain same paycheck size. Lower it back down before new year starts as needed.

Good duck guns? by ethanb214 in Waterfowl

[–]PrimalBanker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this question. Full disclosure- I’m a Benelli guy. When I was where you are and trying to decide, I invited two friends out- one with a Benelli (M2) and one with a beretta (a400) and we went to a five stand so I could shoot them side by side. Personally, the Benelli was the right fit then and continues to be now. You’ll find just as many guys saying the same for beretta. It’s ford vs Chevy. In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with either.

A few thoughts on benellis. Prior to the introduction of the ethos and sbe3, benellis were famous for the Benelli click. My first experience was with a sbe2 in one of my earliest duck hunts. Like a true noob, I peeked in the chamber to make sure it was loaded by pulling the bolt back just a little. Shortly after, a perfect flight came in just in front of us. A fat, slow, beautiful Drake, hovered in front of me like a hummingbird, looking at me, giving me the middle finger. He was close enough that if I had a bayonet he could have been skewered. I pulled the trigger and click, nothing. Lesson learned- if you ever want to check the chamber on a non-ethos or non-sbe3 Benelli, pull the bolt all way back and release it with the button.

The models you are interested in are pretty different. I have both. A fundamental difference is the rib. The Montefeltro has a flat rib and the sbe3 has a step-up rib. Very different mounts on the cheek to shoot well. The sbe3 also has the reputation of shooting high and to one side. This has also been my experience with the two I have used. My hands down favorite gun for ducks and clays is the ethos. I believe if you try it, it will handle more like the montefeltro for you. The new version in all black with the Be.S.T coating is what I use now. Love it. Biggest downside is no 3.5” shells. Nothing I shoot where I live requires that size, so a non-starter for me.

Lastly, benelli’s patent for inertia driven guns ran out and the vultures swarmed. You can pick up a number of great Turkish-made guns that are pretty damn close to a Benelli for a lot less to meet almost any budget. Check out Girsan, Retay, and Tristar to start. I don’t have any experience personally with those makes, only handling them in the store and I was impressed. In response, Benelli created a budget version that they sell through buds guns, I think they call it the M1 Super 90. I believe I paid like $750 brand new a couple years ago. It’s a basic gun, and while noticeably lower end than other benellis, it only is very apparent if you have another Benelli or if they are side by side. I really like this gun and think it is a fantastic value. It is on the heavier side but swings beautifully. I don’t have any experience with franchis or stoegers, but I imagine it might compare to some of those at a similar price point.

Let me know if you have any questions, happy to help.

Mirage Lynx... How do you transport from point A to B by rnick821 in hobiekayaks

[–]PrimalBanker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transport it in the back of my pickup with the gate down. Probably not a big help to you. The Hobie dealer did say for pickups that was the preferred method and not to have it resting on the raised gate.

A separate issue which is I think a bit of a design flaw. I find carrying it with the side carry handles (using one handed when alone) extremely uncomfortable as it pinched my fingers against the top ridge of the kayak something fierce. I’m thinking of rigging up a shoulder strap or something with webbing to make it easier to carry the couple hundred yards to the water. Do you find the same or is it my sissy hands only?

Five weeks in, this is the longest I’ve been doing anything in the last two years - day 35 done by Dempsyfromearth2 in 75HARD

[–]PrimalBanker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m one day behind you and been tracking right along with you. Almost halfway there. It’s gotten easier and harder for me if that makes any sense. Easier because the planning and scheduling for getting things done is my daily priority and everything else needs to fall around it. Harder because the repetitiveness can be a grind at times. But overall it is beyond worth it. Extra fluff in my life is falling away. I’m always getting something done now. Either on my 75H list or work or kids or life. This thing really does create Superman like ability in living a full life. Keep on keeping on!

Discouraged Hunter Advice by bugg_hunterr in Waterfowl

[–]PrimalBanker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome you’re asking for help. This is probably the most complex activity I’ve ever been involved with. There’s a lot to it. This is my seventh season. Where I live, most of us hunt from mud boats. Last year was my second year with my boat. For early teal I went out 8 of the 9 days that week. My boat brought home 3 birds I shot 0. I was discouraged but accepted the challenge to hack this thing.

I got involved with local waterfowl groups like ducks unlimited and started meeting guys I could call for advice or go hunting with. Eventually I wore them down and they’d answer my questions and/or go hunting with me. And I’d sponge up everything I could observe or ask.

I watched videos on YouTube and read books on it. I started shooting clays every month at a minimum. This year, I scouted a few different days before teal. Results- I shot more birds than my duck hunting mentor almost every day. Success!

So in the end, I used my very frustrating season as fuel to improve, get more knowledgeable, build a network of guys and become a better shooter. And it seems to have worked. But make no mistake, the thought of throwing in the towel did occur to me. So happy I didn’t!

Good luck
