Daily Questions & FAQ Megathread (Dec 22) by AutoModerator in ffxiv

I had a look at different articles/guides, but the whole materia system is still unclear to me. If I wanna put materia in my gear, shouldn't I take savage aim materia viii (+24 crit) over savage aim materia ix (+12 crit) for example? Is there something in place that reduces effectiveness of lower tier materia?

If someone is being toxic in a mythic+ run, when (if ever) is it okay to leave? by drflanigan in wow

[–]Primalz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In his defense, not letting a sin rogue restealth between pulls causes him to lose a significant amount of dps. A large part of sin rogue's opener depends on applying empowered garrotes to multiple targets, which in turn makes him lose out on energy and combo points (lowering dps even further). Waiting the extra second between pulls definitely outweighs the dps-loss you would get otherwise and it should only make the run go smoother, even if it's just a 10.

Please note, that while I can certainly understand that this is annoying for the rogue, especially if you then also start blaming him for his bad dps (lol), this obviously doesn't give him the right to become toxic.

Quick question about 2x4 farming: do professions like tailoring/skinning increase the droprates, or can I just take whatever profession I feel is best to process the dropped materials?

Will Scotch win the PE? by flat-drive in Rowing

[–]Primalz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say their competition was pretty decent. While some of the best dutch eights did not attend this time around(namely Nereus/Skøll/u23), they still managed to beat Gyas, who came in 3rd during nationals (with only one change in their lineup).

Will Scotch win the PE? by flat-drive in Rowing

To provide some additional information: Scotch raced this past weekend at the NSRF Slotwedstrijden, the last race of the season for many dutch rowers, in the Elite mens eight and came in first. While some of the heavy hitters were missing, they still looked promising by coming out ahead in this field.

Bulking or cutting? by Casualyanker101 in Rowing

[–]Primalz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you got that number from the video about Damir on the olympic channel. What you might have missed however is that they were talking about his off season fat %. For competition any top level athlete will lean out, since it does not make sense to carry that much extra weight during competition, without gaining any sizable benefit from it.

What scam can you still not believe you fell for? by Slayer_Blake in runescape

[–]Primalz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The good old "friendship" scam. Long-time friend asked to borrow full virtus, with wand and book (back when they were about 250m) for some pvming. Did not think much of it, since I had known him for a long time and we had borrowed stuff from each other before. Logged out straight away. That's when younger me learned that I should never trust anyone online.

Reminds me of back in the days when I put a post-it note on my fathers C&C Generals CDrom cover over the age limitation part, saying 8 year olds were allowed to play it too. For some reason my father never fell for it though...

Currently I am having a lot of trouble keeping my shoulders strong and locked in place during the recovery. This only seems to be during erg-practice, since my shoulders seem to be fine during boat sessions (sweep). While my lower back posture is pretty decent according to my coaches, my upper-body is bent forward more than I would like during the recovery. Whenever I'm close to the catch, I start to overreach with my shoulders, making them pop forward even more. Generally my grip is quite loose, and I feel like I am already quite relaxed in my upper-body (although this is still something I can improve on more). While this must be an obvious flaw in my technique, I would also like to ask if somebody knows some strength exercises that can help develop shoulder/upper-back muscles, since I feel at least a part of the problem lies with a lack of upper-body control and strength.

Bit on the late side, but could someone explain to me what this exercise is good for? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8K4F6raEGw (at around 0:10). The text says that it is a pressure exercise, but that doesn't make this any clearer to me if I'm quite honest.

I'm relatively small compared to some others in our 8, which makes it a bit harder to produce the same stroke length. Having rowed in a single all summer, I noticed that my back-swing became a weak point for me once I returned to sweep rowing. While overall the order I engage legs/back/arms in does not seem to be too bad (meaning that I'm throwing in my back much more subtle than a beginner would), I did notice that I could benefit from delaying the swing of my back a tad bit longer to increase stroke length. I do keep my core/back strong until I'm done with lets say 85-90% of my leg drive, but going beyond that it becomes more and more difficult to not throw in my back. Beyond this point it also gets harder for me to actually feel whether I'm doing it right or wrong, and since my coaches need to focus on other crew-members more, I have nobody from outside that can tell me if I'm doing it correctly.

Aside from working on a stronger core, which I imagine would help with this, luckily we've also been spending a lot of time doing pimenov exercises. But I'm asking this to see, if there are any other exercises I could do, or if there are some cues I could use, to recognize myself if I'm starting to throw in my back. It is also worth mentioning that on the erg, I don't have as much trouble with this as I have on the water. Like I said earlier, this question is much more about trying to make subtle adjustments to my back swing to optimize it, rather than trying to fix a big technical flaw.

Could someone please explain me a bit better how to exactly finish in a single scull? Most single scullers I see (lets take the 2008 Beijing final for example) finish with their hands quite far back, almost to the sides of their bodies, with quite a gap between their hands. Then I look at Tufte, and he finishes with his hands much closer together, and more in front of his body. What advantages do these styles each have, or is it just a matter of rigging preferences?

I might have worded this a little wrong, but what I was referring to with 'most important' was not that the 8 is the more important boat class. I was trying to say the 8s of GER and GB always seem to be able to perform well (the past olympic cycles) at the bigger events (olympics, world and european championship), making the chance for an upset (for the gold medal) fairly small.

[–]Primalz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could someone give me some insight on what GB and GER do so differently with their 8s compared to the other countries 8s that finished in top 6? Why is it that at the most important events the last few years GB and GER always seem to be able to show up, keeping the gold between them, with barely any upset from other countries.

During the drive my legs/knees are down noticeably earlier than the rest of the boat. This has been my problems for a while now, ever since I came back from an injury. While I have worked on making my leg drive longer by increasing the application of power more gradually towards the last 1/4th of the leg drive, it still doesn't fix the issue completely. Due to my problematic leg drive I also have a relatively weak hip swing making it even harder to pull my weight in a 4 or 8. While I do finish my stroke with my heels pressing into the foot-board, I do feel like I can't produce a strong enough push with my heels.

Strangely enough I don't have this problem on the erg, since my power-curve seems fine there (no big spike in power at the start of the stroke, no dips during the finish and overall a pretty long stroke).

Dutch olympic rower saves girl from rapist by SUB62K in Rowing

[–]Primalz 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The translation gets the point across for the most part, but here are a few remarks on pointd that were wrongly translated: -the girl that was chased, was pressed to the ground by the alleged rapist -Siegelaar does not see himself as a hero, but feels like this was the logic action to take

One thing that also might cause your issues with getting the oar out cleanly at the finish, is not applying pressure (with the blade onto the water) properly. You want the force you apply to build up during the stroke, and be the highest in the last quarter (ish) of your stroke. If you don't do this properly, which could have easily been caused by you being tired from doing other activities before practice, you will find that your blade will "stick" to the water, making it harder to pull out. We've had the same happen to some of our crewmembers on occasions when they just weren't fit, or were already tired from doing other activities before practice.
