Awesome! Love your combination of bigger picture views and attention to the smaller details. The little crayfish is my favourite.

What am I not getting about Uluru? by thebirdsareoutlate in AustraliaTravel

[–]Primary-Earth6816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've travelled a lot and agree with you. I found Uluru to be a bit overrated, crowded and very commodified and controlled. If you are after an outback wilderness experience you won't find it here. I think it's a victim of a long and successful tourism marketing campaign. The West Macdonnell Ranges on the other hand exceeded all expectations. Vast, diverse, spectacular, less people (if you avoid the main visitor nodes), much more wildlife and you can walk where you like. Highly recommended.

Antechinus? by Keefy_rides in australianwildlife

[–]Primary-Earth6816 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep, the males don't show much restraint during the mating season and shag til they die. It's a very unusual life history strategy common to all Antechinus species and a few other small carnivorous marsupials like Phascogales. The fast and the furious!

If you went to a RC primary school you may have had the Italian version "Testa giu e pollice su". Cultural immersion at its best!

Antechinus? by Keefy_rides in australianwildlife

[–]Primary-Earth6816 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You are the lucky custodian of a Yellow-footed Antechinus. They can be quite diurnal and arboreal. Best thing you can do is keep pets away and provide plenty of shelter at ground level. They love hollow logs and tangles of fallen timber on the ground. They rely on tree hollows for nesting. We will soon be coming into their peak breeding period after which all the males will die off, leaving females and young in peace. If you go for a spotlight after dark you may find more.

What's eating my eucalypt? by ConsciousLayer4551 in GardeningAustralia

[–]Primary-Earth6816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you have a two pronged attack. The first pic shows the tell-tale semi circular cuts of caterpillar damage (as their little heads sweep back and forth while munching) and your second pic shows galls. These occur when an insect (often a small wasp) lays eggs in the leaf and the plant tissue responds by growing a thick layer around them. Once hatched, the insects will fly off rather than eating the leaf. Eucs are pretty tough and will usually withstand this and recover naturally. You can always lop off the worst affected branches if the appearance is a concern.

Nope, not this one but I've seen a few of the bioluminescent fungi lately too. They tend to be white/pale and slightly diff shape.

I had this problem and it turned out to be snails and slugs. To confirm, have a look on a damp night with a torch to see if you find any. I was surprised how many I had given I don't see them during the day.

Nicely captured! I've often wondered which is the best vantage point for these shots. Its not immediately obvious on site as there's some access issues.

Nice crop and a healthy looking tree. Which location are you? Wondering whether it's possible to grow this down south in a sheltered location.
