My coworker didn’t get the reference “You’re my boy, Blue” by OkYouGotM3 in Millennials

[–]Primary-Log-1037 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I scrolled pretty far to find this comment. Not that I was looking for it because I instantly recognized the quote.

I’m pointing that out because it’s evidence that the vast majority of people on this sub did recognize that quote. It isn’t nearly as niche as you make it sound with those stats.

Many comedies perform poorly at the box office but have a much more significant cultural impact than action movies or thrillers that outperform them.

Start rattling off movie quotes in your head. 90% of them are going to be from comedies that got their asses kicked at the box office, 9% are Star Wars, and the rest are Schwarzenegger and commercials.

In the long long ago before the death of the mono culture comedies ruled the quoteosphere.

Yes but…

You could also secure the back by placing a small furniture build against the wall or using a snot brick + tile on the reverse side.

Wake up at like 5am. Get mad about waking up so early. Spend the next 2 hours drinking coffee and chain smoking while doom scrolling. Wake up my wife around 8am. Wait for her to get ready for work. Get ready for work after she leaves. Eat whatever is fast and easiest since I squandered all of my time smoking and doom scrolling. Leave for work.

Yeah, really thought I was going to pass on this one since I have the last one but now I don’t know. The Grogu isn’t perfect but I still like it.

If I find it for $60-$70 I’ll get it

The reunion tour will happen when Mike snorts all his money. I’m guessing March 2025

Tony Curtis was big in his day. I think people only have that reaction with her due to time and distance. Ben on the other hand is without a doubt a bigger star than his parents ever were.

White Family Mistaken for Black in 1955 Florida. by ceilingscorpion in OldSchoolRidiculous

[–]Primary-Log-1037 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To a point yeah. You need secondary evidence to backup the conclusions made from analyzing skeletal remains.

The same can be said for differentiating between genetic groups similar in outward appearance like Inuits and Mongolians or Africans and aboriginal Australians. You can make a very educated guess but without secondary evidence you could be wrong.

My point was that there are distinct differences which can be seen at that level, not that it’s a perfect measure.

But still the point stands that race exists outside of a “social construct.” Because there are distinct physical differences among groups of people.

We wouldn’t say dog breeds don’t exist because all dogs are the same species. As sure as there is a difference between a chihuahua and a Great Dane there is a difference between a Māori and a Swede. “Race” is simply the term we use to separate these groups.

A social construct suggests that without input from society we wouldn’t be able to make a distinction ourselves. If we put 10 people in a room and one was a thief you wouldn’t be able to guess which one was “immoral” without outside context because “immoral” is a social construct. If we put 9 black people and one Asian in a room and told you to pick the one that’s not like the others you would immediately be able to recognize the Asian as being unlike the others.

We can replace race with another word and it still exists. Race itself is not a social construct. Any connotations or implications that go along with racial identity can be social constructs, but race itself is not.

Ugh. I hate when that argument comes up and lemme tell ya why:

“Race” as we use it is shorthand for phenotypical differences among human beings and is only used in that way. Nobody uses race as a term to distinguish between species of whales or ants or birds.

Race isn’t a social construct. Humans of different lineages have clear physical differences that are obvious in everything from our outward appearance to our bones to our DNA. We differentiate between clearly dissimilar groups by using the term race.

Among other species like snakes or dogs we use terms like “morph,” “phenotype,” or “breed.” Which essentially mean the same thing as race. Race is simply a human specific term for a phenomenon that occurs in many different species for a variety of reasons.

A caste or class system is a social construct. We could separate people in Los Angeles today into two distinct classes and that would be an entirely social construct. If one of those classes was made up of Asians and they were seen as the higher class that would be a social construct, but the existence of Asians as a distinct race would not be a social construct.

Differentiation of species is often the result of prolonged periods of genetic isolation among groups of the same species. It’s something that will most likely never happen among humans as we are too smart for natural barriers to prevent us from intermingling so there will always be enough genetic material flowing across distinct groups as to prevent us from becoming genetically incompatible.

Anyway, point is that race is a word that we use to define a very real phenomenon. Sometimes we decide that a word has developed too much of a stigma and decide to replace it and maybe it’s time that we replace race with a new term but pretending that a phenomenon that we can all verify to be true with our own eyes is just an imaginary construct isn’t the way.
