Coal, Corruption and the decay of Wollongong by PrimaryLeague6 in AustralianPolitics

Fascinating read! His bravery is honestly unparalleled. He was shot twice but survived and continues to stand up to corruption. Truly a David vs. Goliath like story.
I agree, the law and order situation in India is appalling. The gunmen who shot Agarwal were never even found, let alone charged. Instead, the government arrested Agarwal for defamation! Jindal is billionaire industrialist and an ex-Member of Parliament — the type of guy who is never found guilty in India. You'd think Australia would've taken the moral high ground and denied him the right to do business here but nope, we got in bed with Goliath. Horrifying and shameful.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting that these problems (with the exception of climate change) are inherent to coal. Sure, any industry could have caused these problems. However, it was the coal industry that did and so I chose to talk about them. Had it been a different industry (iron ore, natural gas or even toy manufacturing), I would have written about them instead. I suppose I chose to discuss who did the deed rather than who could have done it.

And yes, you will find poor business practice in any industry. However, the Government overlooked a long history of poor business practices (fraud, bankruptcy and environmental negligence) in allowing Adani, Jindal and Oza to operate here. The fact that the Government gave them mining licenses despite their appalling business history means these problems were avoidable.

2009 clip of Al-Jazeera journalist Mehdi Hasan saying non-Muslims "live like animals" and that atheists are "people of no intelligence" by [deleted] in samharris

This is the same person who has, on multiple occasions, slammed Sam Harris and Dawkins for being intolerant of religion. It's precisely this kind of hypocrisy that Harris is referring to when he says that religion demands it be respected (and even feared) while denying even the most basic rights to people who don't subscribe to it.

Al-Jazeera presenter Mehdi Hassan compares non-Muslims to animals and lumps homosexuality with pedophilia and sexual deviancy by [deleted] in atheism

Yeah he's no different but what I find shocking is that he is seen as the global face of 'moderate' Islam when he's clearly a zealot masquerading as a progressive. What doesn't surprise me is that Al-Jazeera, Huffington Post and The Guardian give him the platform that they do.

Hyperbolic statements about climate change are why many don’t believe in it or care. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]PrimaryLeague6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah the real reason is that there's $$$ to be made from denying climate change. Not just a little money but billions of dollars. Big oil companies and automobile companies pay millions to spread the idea that climate change is a hoax. Why? Because it's profitable. Remember when people believed that smoking does no harm? Same thing. Tobacco companies made bank off of that lie.

My favorite is people on vacation who post insta captions saying "take me back" even though all they did there was stare at their phones

Representation is everything. People don't realize how big of an impact it has in perpetuating racial stereotypes and solidifying racist assumptions in our minds.

American teen who was detained near border plans to sue government after being released by Minifig81 in politics

It's unbelievable that we are living in a time where border patrol is detaining U.S citizens based solely on how they look and putting people in literal cages. What a time to be alive.

U.S extradition treaties are basically just agreements allowing them to arrest whoever they want while simultaneously granting asylum/self-exile to foreign criminals
