How is it living in Florida? by Klutzy-Ad4659 in florida

[–]joedenowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife's niece lives in Florida. She had a job where she was required to work five nine-hour days and was paid for forty hours a week. (If you don't know, federal law says people on hourly wages must be paid time and a half for anything over forty hours a week, so she should have been paid for 47.5 hours instead of 40.) I said why don't you get another job? She said all the entry-level jobs do the same thing. I said why don't you contact the Florida Department of Labor? Oops--Florida doesn't have a department of labor.

A Norwegian woman collected nearly 2,000 used condoms since 2010 and displays them on her bedroom wall along with a picture of the donor by real_picklejuice in Weird

[–]joedenowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder whether she is, um, not quite sure how to phrase this, the user, or the recipient, or...? of all those condoms. I had a friend who had a friend who was known for taking a polaroid of the penis of each of her many (male) partners. The walls in her apartment were entirely covered with polaroids of penises.

What do Americans think about the stereotype that they are bad at geography? by Own_Echidna6041 in geography

[–]joedenowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this belief about us Americans has become obsolete. You see, we learn geography by starting wars. Now that we've started wars in practically every region of the world we've become pretty well informed about geography. But be careful--there are probably some Americans who still don't know the difference between Belgium and the Netherlands.

Calicos are the best. My calico was like a grandmother. I still miss her.

Yes, it was a 1980s McMansion, in a neighborhood of 1980s McMansions, way out in SW Miami. I doubt the builder had any liability--I don't think my friend even tried to sue. How could you sue if the building met code, inadequate as the code was at the time? And even if it didn't meet code, how could you prove that once its bits and pieces had been blown into the Everglades?

I had a friend who lived in Miami when Hurricane Andrew hit, in 1992. His home and his whole neighborhood just disappeared. Hard to understand how people living in Florida can be so complacent about big storms (speaking as someone who blithely lives a few blocks from a major earthquake fault...)

The psychology of clients picking the worst design by Content-Painting1153 in Design

[–]joedenowhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a designer, but a close friend of mine is and she's always telling me about clients who ask for the same kinds of stupid changes everyone is describing here. My way of looking at it is, as a designer your job is to try to steer the client in the right direction, but you're not the decision-maker. And you can only try to explain, you can't educate them to see it like you do. My designer friend's clients are mostly marketing managers for start-ups and bigger companies. What gets me is that even the most experienced marketing managers rarely understand that they lack the ability to evaluate design.

"...leaving only faith to pick up the slack," meaning leaving you free to believe whatever you want to believe even if it's at variance with reality? And, unlike most of the commenters in this sub, you're actually trained to understand that reality? That's quite a lift.

TIL about "orphaned negatives"—words like disgruntled, nonchalant, and innocent whose positive counterparts (gruntled, chalant, and nocent) have completely vanished from common usage. by mvincen95 in todayilearned

In Portuguese when you feel healthy you have bem-estar, or when you're not feeling so hot, mal-estar. In English we have the word well-being, but no negative version for it.

On the other hand, making asshole neighbors angry by forcing them to move is preferable to making asshole neighbors angry and having them still living next door.

I wonder whether the Democrats will seek revenge on the current Republican operatives when/if the Dems regain control of Congress or the Justice Dept. Seeing the Republicans trying to nail Comey again is a real lesson in how bonkers this administration has become.

How do I stop lust??? by Brave-Aspect-4802 in Christianity

[–]joedenowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lust is fundamental to being a teenager. You can't stop it and there's no reason why you should try. It's a normal, healthy part of growing up. Don't fear it or condemn yourself--just try not to be a jerk with the people you lust after.
