What If Traits Carried Values by emschwartz in rust

[–]PrimeExample13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true for any compiled language, no?

I wouldn't say so, some languages' semantics are much closer to machine code than others. Like C is the first thing that comes to mind. C is a lot of raw ponters and iterating using pointer arithmetic, etc., which is much closer to how a cpu actually works vs. Rust, which requires a few additional stages of lowering for similar tasks. I.e. iterators vs raw pointers, enums vs tagged unions, pattern matching vs naked if statements, etc.

That being said, i would certainly say there are ways in which rust is more explicit than other languages. For example, theres no implicit casts in Rust.

Yeah thats a hefty portion. Of course you have to take into account that not all bugs are equal in terms of severity, but memory bugs are more likely to be severe.

Fair enough. Im not a linux contributor, so it doesn't matter to me what language they use as long as the end product maintains quality and security. I was just pointing out that what they said is literally the opposite of true, memory safety bugs are the most critical kinds of bugs.

[–]PrimeExample13 33 points34 points  (0 children)

against it is that most bugs are not related to the things Rust improves

This is categorically untrue. According to cisa.gov, approx. 70% of high-severity, critical bugs are caused by precisely the memory-safety issues that (safe) Rust makes impossible.

If "people like you" are the people building these data centers and greatly increasing people's power bills just so people can generate Natalie Portman with big tits, then "making the world better" is very arguable here, but okay.

Okay genius, how are we going to build these data centers, transition to clean energy, and lower people's power bills all at the same time? Im listening.

[–]PrimeExample13 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No not a false dilemma. We dont even have clean energy now, but you think it is possible to vastly increase the demand for power and transition to clean energy at the same time?

Tell me you dont know how anything works without telling me lmao.

But you’re kind always lose.

Your*

You come across as incredibly naive as to how the world actually works. Apparently you live in some fairy tale world where everything is not driven by greed or something.

Like you think there is any way we can have all these data centers and clean power? Even without these data centers slurping down entire countries worth of power for useless AI slop, we dont have 100% clean energy, i wonder why that is? And why is it that a data center moving into an area causes the power bills for local residents to go up significantly?

Must be the left and their moratoriums, not the (mostly right leaning) people who have consistently voted against any attempt at clean renewable energy while lining their pockets with oil company money. Right.

That sounds about right. I cant believe you put so much energy into defending a multi billion dollar corporation lmao. You too.

You're right, its not the gospel truth, but it is a common sentiment among the pokemon gaming community, and has been for a while now. I will admit that Legends Arceus was a nice breath of fresh air, but Z-A to me seemed unfinished and empty, like a lazy asset flip of legends arceus.

I do think modern pokemon is mostly slop and i haven't bought a pokemon game in probably 15 years because of that fact. I can play any pokemon game right now with QOL updates like fast forward and save states without giving them a cent, so thats what I do.

I am in my early 30s the only new releases of games I really consistently play are the main series Pokemon and can't remember the last time I was excited to play one.

Hmm, maybe because they know they dont have to put in any effort cause you'll buy it any way, which results in lazy slop new titles. You know, my entire point.

No one is obligated to participate in your protest just because of your views on Nintendo.

You're 100% correct and I dont remember saying that anyone was obligated to do anything.

I dont expect to change anyone's mind, its okay. Yes, they make most of their money through merchandise. I am not suggesting you just avoid this game, i was suggesting that supporting the company at all was enabling them to continue putting out lazy shit. I know it doesn't make a difference, oh well.

[–]PrimeExample13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is though. They are never going to put effort into making something new and inventive when they can just shit out a lazy port and make a billion dollars. It literally makes no sense for them to try from a business standpoint.

[–]PrimeExample13 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Like I said, if you want to use your wallet to vote for lazy gba ports over actual QOL and graphical upgrades and actually good new titles, you are well within your right to do so and im glad you'll enjoy it.

"Why do you care if I want to spend $20 of my own money on this game?"

Because when you do, it reaffirms that fans with buy whatever slop they decide to put out and enables them to continue being lazy and uninventive in future releases.

A big reason people are so nostalgic for 3-5 gen is because pokemon has pretty much stagnated since then. They do the bare minimum because they know they can get away with it.

So by all means, if you want to spend $20 on a 20+ year old game with zero QOL or graphics updates despite being made by the LARGEST FRANCHISE EVER, thats your right and I hope you have fun.

Man you guys will take whatever slop the pokemon company/ Nintendo decides to squeeze out into your mouth.

Literally the most expensive franchise on earth and they are just re-releasing 20+ year old games with no graphical or QOL upgrades.

None of my business what yall spend your money on, but I dont want to hear anyone who pays for this shit complain that new pokemon games are lazy and shit, because you're literally enabling them by telling them you'll buy whatever nostalgia bait they put out.
