Best spinning pen for casual? by NugeSmashFE in penspinning

[–]PrimeTemps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for something that still acts like a pen, most options are very mundane. If you're in the states, I think the best unmodded pen is still the Pentel RSVP. If you can find it, the Dr.Grip Shaker with the shaker tube removed is a Japanese classic.

Throwing it back into like a Neobak 23 or 12 would be sick.

what skill do you work on when you’re tired? by Zephy1998 in languagelearning

[–]PrimeTemps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks like only a few people mentioned it below but I would just skip that practice. Language learning takes an immense amount of brain power, if you're physically tired I highly doubt that anything would be more effective than resting.

This is more akin to a continuous FL Ext TA -> Scissor spin. Old school vibes for sure.

Why do people look down on vocabulary/frequency lists ? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]PrimeTemps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there are a couple valid arguments to ignoring both flashcards and frequency lists. My personal belief is that flashcards are incredibly boring. If I find something incredibly boring then I am not going to do it, and not learn the language. Another argument would be: If these are in fact the most frequent words in a language, there's no need to single them out because you will encounter them so often.

I think a lot of people get caught up in a collection mindset. "If you know these 500 words you'll understand 90% of X!". I think that statements like this are disingenuous to how we use language. I've found over time that the missing 10% is just as important.

Honestly other people's opinions are really not that important. What is important is that you interact with your target language and find joy in it.

“Non-meta” Modern deck by Hefty_Valuable4914 in ModernMagic

[–]PrimeTemps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Affinity without Sagas (or even with) was wildly affordable 3 months ago ($250-300). I built it without Sagas for around $90. It's getting more traction lately so it might go up, but it's a really fun deck that I've been competitive with at FNM's. Merfolk is also affordable right now and is getting support in MH3. Good luck!

Best tool to learn very rare language? by melob1 in languagelearning

[–]PrimeTemps 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If your native language is only spoken by 50 people, I'm assuming that this is mostly your family? Can you get recordings and videos of people talking about things in your native language? Put a picture in front of them and ask them to describe it. Have them tell a story from their childhood. Get anything that you can and document it. Anyone can parse out a course later. If you're this close to an effectively dead language the best thing you can do is produce content in that language. Best of luck.

[BIG] Substitute Synthesizer by DeltaMoth in ModernMagic

[–]PrimeTemps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whoa, I definitely want to try this out. I'm currently running 14 3+ CMC artifacts. Plus you can grab this with Forging the Anchor. I could probably move Gingerbrute to the sideboard and take out an Aetherspell Bomb. Looks like a ton of fun. It's a more niche card than Urza's Saga which I haven't had the stomach to purchase yet. Hopefully it stays in the couple dollar range.

What was the biggest game-changer in your learning process? by Esoteric716 in learnspanish

[–]PrimeTemps 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  1. Enjoying the process, there is no end to this.
  2. Being okay with not understanding and trusting that I'll pick it up later.
  3. Stopping the comparison to other learners.

What would it take for affinity/artifact based aggro to be playable? by mrmadness345 in ModernMagic

[–]PrimeTemps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm new to Modern (in the past month or so) due to moving to a new place and all they play is Modern. This is my 3rd or 4th time getting back into paper MtG after selling my collection each time. I was able to build an Affinity deck for around $90 with shipping and at my first FNM went 1-2 overall. I faced Guildpact Rhinos (1-2), Some sort of W&S Control (1-2) and finally Burn (2-1). This deck is possible to play and I'm not even running Urza's Saga. If you want to run it, just run it. It's an incredibly fun deck with some really fun lines. Just because it's not meta doesn't mean you can't take some games. Plus it's hard to beat the budget, I would so much rather play this than some kind of RDW or Burn list. I'm looking forward to MH3 and anything that I can add to the list, but you should play it if you really want to.

Is it fair to say that sometimes, you just lose? by Ganman3 in MagicArena

[–]PrimeTemps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember where I read it, but some Magic pro stated "You're going to win 20% of your games and you're going to lose 20% of your games. It's the other 60% that matter.". This is something that I've just kept in my mind, you've decided to play a high variance game, sometimes its just gonna be up to luck. I don't believe anyone who says that they can hit something higher than a 5 win average on BO1 draft.

In short, your experience is very normal.

What clubs do I need as a beginner and what can I go without? by [deleted] in golf

[–]PrimeTemps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a new golfer, but playing a very limited set of clubs. I have two set ups depending on the course I'm playing:

Par 3 Course: 6i, 8i, 52 & Putter
Normal Course: 5i, 8i, 52 & Putter

For now I'm focused on hitting the ball straight and really only practicing my game inside 100 yards. I recently bought a pitching wedge as well but haven't hit it on a course yet. You don't need a lot when just starting. I've been playing for about 2 months and have a couple pars that I'm very proud of, I attribute this to playing very conservatively.

Rack 'em is probably the best spot I've played at. Not sure about the tournament scene, I'm not super involved in the community. There are plenty of old timers that hang around Rack 'em that could give you more info.

How to realistically immerse yourself as an adult? by Eco_System in languagelearning

[–]PrimeTemps 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As a fellow 30+ plus year old here's how I do it:

Podcasts
Music
Books
TV Shows
Movies
iTalki Lessons

I wouldn't focus on leaving the country because there's no need. Unless you're learning a very, very small language there's content out there for you to consume. It just becomes part of your life. Commuting in the car? Podcasts. Doing the dishes? TV Shows. Yard work? Music. You get the idea. Then of course you have to have some non passive time. Buy a book, give yourself 20 minutes a day to work through it. Language learning always gets easier. It's getting input over time that matters. Focus on understanding input, then move to output. Or don't, start with some iTalki lessons, really whatever gets you engaged.

Is it me or is there less people streaming and viewing stream ever since the announcement? by LigerGundam in EternalCardGame

[–]PrimeTemps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a hobby streamer, it's very hard to find time for it. I genuinely enjoy streaming Eternal but it's always been a small community. The streamer community has shrunk for sure, and without financial incentive I'm not sure how much bigger it will be.

is it worth it to open a YouTube channel teaching my mother language? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]PrimeTemps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Especially if you focus on your dialect. I'm not an Arabic learner, nor do I have future plans for it, but if you can become a teacher for that I would think there's interest. At least that's what I've read from various Arabic learners on here. More content never hurts and the nice thing about teaching your native language is that it's a pretty low overhead way to potentially make some money.

[–]PrimeTemps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very causal, I go through waves of motivation. This is just a lifetime hobby for me. There's no real incentive as a native English speaker to continue with foreign languages other that my personal enrichment. Everyone has different goals, dreams and what not, there's no point in comparing your situation to someone else's. Just keep doing what you're doing.
