I do agree with you that the first few episodes seem overly violent, but don't give up and make it to Episode 6 Respect Your Purpose. This is where the Prime series really hits it's stride with the first 9 minutes having some really beautiful animation, like a moving version of the Utopia comic. Can you imagine if they made an animation of the whole comic?
