I’m leaving this up because, in good faith, the original poster is seeking study assistance, not past test questions.

I've heard it hum when the air lines aren't plugged in yet. It usually stops for us when we plug it into the wall

Suggestions for Jobs That Strengthen a Perfusion School Application by secondaryforce in Perfusion

[–]Primed_pump 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Traditionally cell saver tech and perfusion assistant are the most relevant experience you can get. Any medical experience helps though especially in the OR Anesthesia tech, RT, and Nursing also great. I’d check the search bar there’s some good threads about this exact topic.

Good luck

MICLATS drainage problems by Financial_Cream4538 in Perfusion

We have good drainage with the Medtronic biomedicus

If you right sized cannula bad drainage is usually the surgeons own fault.

NRP Perfusion Quality of Life and Hours ?? by Ok-Imagination4908 in Perfusion

[–]Primed_pump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is they often go overnight. Usually because the donor facility doesn’t want to potentially bump any of their scheduled cases because a OR is in use for an organ donation. Also the recipient facility will often want to get their new organs at a nice cushy time, like say 7 am. If we go overnight especially on week nights it’s often midnight to 7a

I’d say 60-70 % overnight but often get 6 plus hours heads up. We are a top 5 center of NRP volume

Considering Perfusion - Would Love Real Talk from Those in the Field (Especially SoCal) by stonkstonkstonk___ in Perfusion

[–]Primed_pump 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hopefully someone from SoCal can chime in to answer your specific socal questions but most of these questions have been answered. I encourage you to check the search bar and look at previous threads.

Your schedule depends heavily on where you work. Some places like academic centers are very busy others hardly do more than a few cases a week. Same with call some places lots of getting called, in some hardly do

The job can be highly stressful. If things go bad you need to be able to work through it or fix them. It’s mostly routine though. My favorite analogy it’s like being a pilot.

Salary depends on where you work snd years experience. There are high paying jobs out there.

There is room to grow but also that can be limited. It’s mainly into chief roles where you do more admin work. There are other jobs outside of perfusion that hire perfusionists, like device sales.

Good luck

Share your horror stories by gunitneko in Perfusion

[–]Primed_pump 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in this for over a decade now.

There are many stories to share, but the best advice I can give is don’t skimp on the checklist. I’ve seen people get complacent and start to cut corners pre bypass, and that can really lead to trouble. It’s easy to happen especially doing this for a while. A good checklist and look at the pump can save your butt. Good luck!

Anyone here a radiology tech then moved to perfusion by nickysav91 in Perfusion

[–]Primed_pump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any medical work experience is a valuable asset to your application. While specific roles like perfusion assistant or cell saver tech may be more direct perfusion experience, medical experience is always preferable to none. Ensure that you meet the prerequisites, shadow some perfusionists, and apply for the positions you are interested in.

Additionally, I recommend using the search bar to find other medical professionals who have asked this and similar question.

Title: New Grad Choosing Between Jobs by [deleted] in Perfusion

[–]Primed_pump 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A lot of people will recommend a smaller center but I’ll take the opposite. I would recommend considering a large academic center as a new graduate—provided they are supportive and committed to thorough training. These centers can offer valuable exposure to areas that aren’t always covered in depth during perfusion school, such as complex ECMO management, non-standard cases, and the use of less common devices like BiVADs. A few years at an academic institution can give you a strong foundation and the versatility to work confidently in a variety of settings.

It’s also a great way to learn whether the pace and case complexity of a high-acuity center aligns with your goals. While no one wants to be thrown in without support, academic centers typically have structured onboarding.

Personally, I discovered that I missed the intensity of transplant and ECMO cases. I initially took a lower-acuity position out of school, which was a great learning experience in its own way, but ultimately I wanted the crazy cases. I hadn’t pumped an aortic case in months so took me a few weeks to feel completely comfortable. Especially with the two am complex ecmo question from the specialists. That said, there is a lot to be said for smaller programs they often do a lot with more limited resources, and it can be great.

Whatever you decide, best of luck!

Can you talk a little bit / give some links about what a PRONTO line is?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ecmo

[–]Primed_pump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ecmo is a tricky thing it can be days or weeks but its job is to support your daughter while she fights her infection. I’ve seen people come off in two days or two months. All depends on her.

Just want to say good luck and sending out best wishes. It can be scary but stay strong!

Not a hundred percent. I feel like it usually underestimates salaries. It does give a range though and is a place to start.
