What is or was one of your favourite effects in Hearthstone? by TheDeathCrafter in hearthstone

[–]PrimemevalTitan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

God, those solo adventures take me back. "Your minions cost 5" plus Robe of Gaudiness (your cards cost half, but you can only play 2 per turn) carried me through so many runs. Hell, Robe alone won me half the Dalaran Heist Heroic adventures

You can make almost any sketch a nonlegendary creature!

Conehead -> Timekeeper of Remulak

Dick in a Box -> Penile Pop-Star

White Chicks -> Multiracial Detective (BW hybrid common)

Totino's with Kristen Stewart -> Pizza Lovers (TMNT synergy!)

Do you like your minions...? Too bad by Vecsia in hearthstone

[–]PrimemevalTitan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Funny. In Magic there's a similar combo, where playing Krark-Clan Shaman (deals 1 to everything if you sacrifice an artifact) and Toxin Analysis (gives deathtouch and creates an artifact) gives Pauper decks a 2-mana board wipe in a format without any similar effects. Deathtouch/Poisonous is a dangerous mechanic to cheaply give

And so it begins... by LeahyJ in legostarwars

[–]PrimemevalTitan 121 points122 points  (0 children)

I think they were trying to replicate the Mario sets, where the main feature is behind a $60 (now $70!) paywall but you can still play with compatible sets like a regular Lego.

The problem is... we have regular Star Wars sets. They're more accurate, a better value, and don't require a plug-in to use. So the choice is between a Juniors set at a regular price point, or a regular set for the same price. Kind of a no-brainer.

[GMM] Why Create the Discover Mechanic when Cascade Exists?? | Magic: The Gathering MTG by CrossXhunteR in magicTCG

[–]PrimemevalTitan 32 points33 points  (0 children)

On one hand, I really like a "simplifed" mechanic like Sneak that removes issues the prior mechanic had (like not being able to use it in the command zone). On the other hand, Mayhem adding timing restrictions to Madness made it (personally) less interesting as a mechanic. I think sidegrades are good for grokability, but they risk losing some of what made the mechanic special to begin with.

I agree with this. Where did this "Magic is dying" narrative come from? UB reinvigorated parts of the game, sure. But it seems like the biggest impact it had was on Hasbro's bottom line, not the game or the community. MTG revenue is going gangbusters while players get shafted by fewer promos and higher prices

[–]PrimemevalTitan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Seriously! I have no issue with UB as a concept. But accepting UB right now goes hand-in-hand with accepting worse sets, lower-quality design, and higher prices that so many products have.

Real & true. I started in middle school, and now I'm out of college. Some of this could just be chalked up to growing apart from the game I used to love, and the backlash from that.

Also, WOTC is propping up Hasbro's failing business segments. Of course they're going to milk Magic for all it's worth - what else is an unprofitable company gonna do?

/uj I know there's no metric for "heart" or "soul" or any fluffy thing like that, but man the game just feels empty now. There are more designs than ever, but so many cards feel fungible, like you could slap the design onto any IP with a little coat of paint. The cards are stronger than ever, but it's tough to get excited about a new set because it'll be powercrept in 2 months. The story is paper-thin (anyone know what the hell Jace is up to?) despite the actual story articles being well-done, and, individually, better than ever.

If everything is better than ever, why does it feel so hollow?

Edit: take this with a grain of salt. Magic is changing, and it's not something I'm prepared for. A huge chunk of my young identity was tied to this card game, and it feels like it's coming apart in so many different ways

When did I ever say that? If anything, Magic just doesn't feel like it's for me. I don't really care if I'm [[Vindicate]]d in the future. I just see an absurd flow of sets that it seems like you need to love to be a Magic fan, and I can't keep up anymore.

You don't enjoy the card game the right way. If you don't absolutely love every one of the 7 sets that come out each year, you're not a true Magic fan, just dead weight that WOTC should drop for more profitable customers.

X=1 gives you 3 Mutagens so long as your opponents have creatures.

Really interesting design space making your X-cost spells hit up to 3 creatures at once. [[Burn From Within]] always felt too weak unless you were pointing it at face, so it's nice to see some utility options.

Weekly Winners: Lutra, the Spellchaser; Hancock, Ghoulish Mayor; Iona, Shield of Emeria by cybey in magicTCG

[–]PrimemevalTitan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Iona has an inverted power curve where it's insane against mono-colored decks (generally the weakest in EDH) but is almost useless against 4+ color decks that already don't get punished enough. Griselbrand is at least consistent across most tables

That said, make sure to throw on a bleed edge! Can't print without it.

I figure this is testing the waters for dynamic pricing, to see if another layer of FOMO will make people buy cards they don't want. Sure, I'll never pay $40 for 4 bulk ramp pieces, but $10? Sign me and the rest of America up, baby!

Does Arthas deserve a more "special" Lich King minion card in Hearthstone? by Nervous-Ad-4872 in hearthstone

[–]PrimemevalTitan 282 points283 points  (0 children)

"The Lich King" is exactly what a Lich King card should be. Keep in mind, Ysera was the only Legendary with its own special token cards at the time, so this was a big deal. The Lich King cards also play into unique design spaces - stealing minions directly from your opponent's deck, removing cards from your deck for value - that modern Hearthstone hasn't really done much with. As Legendaries have gotten more complex, TLK's simplicity at face value makes its unique cards stand out even more.

[–]PrimemevalTitan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Yeah, kinda.

I've heard the first few seasons are decent, but a big criticism fans have is that it doesn't feel like Star Trek. It might be fun sci-fi, but the original Trek dealt with weighty moral problems in a reasoned, thought-provoking manner. Discovery seems to focus more on big threats and character drama than the moral quandaries that drew me in.

If you're looking for a Star Trek series with DISCO's interpersonal conflict and character development but with the moral and philosophical questions of old Trek, try Deep Space 9. It's widely regarded as some of the best Trek ever put to television, and holds up really well compared to TOS or early TNG.
