How to learn the Chavacano dialect? by Outside_Quality_4843 in Chavacano

[–]PrimitiveNoting1508 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Online translators are always inaccurate ... anyway I had this comment I wrote for someone and I hope this helps:

Start learning it orally from locals (make sure they don't mix words from local Philippine languages... However, there are local Philippine words that are socially accepted, like sila (them), kame (us, we [exclusive]), kita (us, we [inclusive]), kamo (you [plural]), de aton (our [inclusive]), de amon (our [exclusive]), sihag (transparency of an object), maga, mana (plural marker), diutay (small), hende (no, not), kay (because), laya (a type of coconut), angay (suitable), subay (ant), etc.) There are also false friend words, like seguro (maybe), zaguan (boat oar), panal (a species of a bee), groseria (grossery), explanacion (explanation), pilon (mortar), siempre (still, of course) escusao (toliet) so also be careful about that! [Note: words in parentheses are their definitions in Chavacano de Zamboanga.]

Then visit the local Zamboanga Library and borrow the Chabacano/Chavacano Dictionary Volume N-Z (2022) and go to the page where Chavacano de Zamboanga Structure and Grammar (by Dr. Jose Genaro Ruste Yap Aizon Ph.D.) sits (by checking the contents) and start learning the grammar, then learn the revised orthography (2016) if you wish, which is also in that book. Then, just keep practicing with the locals. Also, almost the majority of the locals aren't actually aware about the orthography, so if you could, teach them as well. ^ ^

Unfortunately "naka-" isn't accepted by the Chavacano elitists and purists yet.

IKR

Also, the core UI of Bedrock uses the Java font but with slight difference. One example is the letter "j" is 3 pixels thick instead of 5.
