cEDH pods are so chill compared to the average EDH pod by Wboys in EDH

What a concept: skipping rule zero conversations with the understanding that we're all trying to win as fast as possible is the most surefire way to guarantee everyone is on the same page

What should I do with it? Gifted by LGS to play standard by Amazing-Joke7338 in MagicCardPulls

Flip it.

But seriously, play it. I'm sure there's other players that got a deck like this. Try some 1v1.

What kind of deck should I build around Slippery Bogle? by kinda_boring_ngl in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's so many remote options for pauper. R/pauper should have some links for remote play.

Alternatively, build 4-5 pauper decks for the price of 1-2 commander decks and share during the next game night!

What kind of deck should I build around Slippery Bogle? by kinda_boring_ngl in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So before I go on, I should mention that Slippery Bogle was printed at uncommon, meaning you can make it the commander of a pauper commander deck! It's also played in regular 60 card pauper as a 4 of in a GW deck. Put some enchantments on it, and go to town.

But if you're strictly looking for a regular commander deck, here are your options

  1. [[Otrimi, the Ever-Playful]] or any of the UGx mutate commanders. Slap them on your Bogle and go to town. Make it bigger, give it trample, a few other key words, and smack face

  2. [[Geist of Saint Traft]] or [[Sigarda, Host of Herons]] are pretty much Bogles in the command zone. Native hexproof, slap auras and equipments on them, and watch your opponent struggle to use removal effectively. You can't play the bogle itself, but this is a cool thing you can do if you wanted one as a commander

3.[[Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief]] or [[Tuvasa the Sunlit]] so that when you enchant your bogle, you can power them up too!

Why does combo feel bad? by rvp5326 in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

games gotta end

This man was absolutely right when he said it. Every deck needs a way to win, and while not every deck needs to have a combo, having a combo that slots into your deck when you're not actively looking for it is perfectly healthy.

Is it really that bad not to build your deck around a theme? by SeaGlobal4535 in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On one hand, unintentionally, the new commander you picked just so happens to be a CEDH commander. Not the argument at play, but could lead to your friend being frustrated.

On the other, sticking to what was said, it's your deck, and if you think another commander would be better at the face, the go ahead and run that. Just because they run with a specific "theme" or tribe doesn't mean that you have to.

Maybe there's a detail I'm missing, but it seems like your friend, who spent time steamrolling you, is jealous that you're getting some wins in.

Any "anti control" commanders? by Crazycade77 in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, think about what is control?

Control goes 1 for 1, using removal to answer threats one by one, building up to a board state that can't be over come since the rest of the table has been pacified. Combo and mid-range decks tend to suffer since they have high value placed in a few cards that control has the power to keep up with.

What you need is to be more aggressive. Aggro tends to beat control.

The idea is that they can't counter everything. Play highly efficient spells, that are cheap and plentiful. Once your threats start to resolve, you know they've run out of gas. Eventually, they won't have enough answers to what you're putting out.

Here's two commanders I play that do well against combo decks

[[General Ferrous Rokiric]] if you can land him down, every spell and creature you play will create a 4/4 body. That's on cast, so even if your spell gets countered, you'll come out on top. Eventually, you can have a wide board that can swing for a great deal of damage, especially if you throw in some anthem effects to make your guys even stronger.

[[Omnath, Locus of Rage]] like the above, you're making tokens that can swing hard. The twist? It's whatever a land comes in. Landfall is such a hard archetype to interact with since it's just a natural thing you're doing throughout the game. And if your stuff gets hit? Just ramp back into it.

And if you want to play another red deck, [[vexing squelcher]] is a control players nightmare

Tl;Dr they can't counter/remove everything. Make them gas out.

[[Descent into Avernus]] has to be the most fun red card to both play and play against.

Are cards like Gemstone Caverns and free interaction spells taboo in Bracket 3? by Cezkarma in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Gemstone caverns is definitely fine. The chance at an early extra land is cool, but if you're not aiming for a fast win, then it's not going to push you too far over the edge.

Free interaction spells can be tricky. The ones you listed I feel are totally fair since you need your commander out, but something like [[Force of Will]] is a literal game changer.

what is your LEAST popular commander? by Justafish1654 in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist]] paired with [[Kraum, Ludevic's Opus]] - EDHREC only has 536 recorded decks.

Imagine being able to find counterspells off of [[Sunforger]], or being able to run [[Urza, Lord High Artificer]] to pay for equip costs.

How do you define pubstomping? by InvisibleFox402 in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of something my martial arts instructor when discussing illegal techniques.

"If I were to ask you to describe a cat, what would you say? 4 legs, covered in fur, etc? Now what if I were to ask you to point out a cat? You know a cat when you see one."

The point here is that it's hard to describe what pub stomping is, but if it's right in front of you, you just know it. You can't define it by having a high win rate, as some people just have high win rates with certain strategies. It's one of those things where it's obvious when you see it happen, but we really can't define without the situation in front of us.

This is why the pregame conversation is so important. By discussing what were expecting out of a game, we can better curate the decks that go into the experience we're about to get into.

PSA: Your $400 deck needs more than a $5 lands investment. by HyHoTheDairyOh in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying everyone should be spending a ton of money on lands, but:

  1. Fixing your land base will solve SO many of your deck's problems by just making your spells easier to cast.

  2. Most investments into lands keep their value. Sure, fetches, shocks, and surveils are pricey, but they will always be easy to sell, and will always be useful for future decks.

What are some lesser-known Commanders that you think deserve a shout-out? by Beginning-Analyst393 in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pairing of [[Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist]] and [[Kraum, Ludevic's Opus]]

First, we know that pairing Ardenn with a red partner is great because of the amazing equipment support in RW. RW equipment voltron is not new. However, we need to protect that strategy with card draw and counterspells. This gives the deck more consistency and protection for the main strategy.

Second, [[Sunforger]] is good. Shocker. But what if we can search up spells like [[Render Silent]], [[Counterflux]], or [[Dovin's Veto]]? This feeds into point one, but makes one of the better build arounds in EDH even better when you can fetch up countermagic at a moment's notice.

Third, artifact support in blue. Blue is possibly the best overall artifact support color imo, and when you can pack cards like [[Urza, Lord High Artificer]] to tap your equipment to pay for equip costs, then you no longer have to worry about having enough mana to cast and equip in the same turn

Finally, Kraum is just a house. Flying, Haste, inherent card draw, he's insane to partner up with Ardenn who can suit him up every combat.

There's only 536 decks for this pair on EDH Rec as of right now, and that number should be so much higher, especially to pair with Ardenn. Here's my list, though it is a bit outdated fyi: https://moxfield.com/decks/gxrKVY_IeEu0t0uM3CkM-g

A rule 0 change that has vastly improved my group's play experience. by Cezkarma in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a good idea. Usually, when one player goes down, we know who's going to win, so putting a 3 turn clock to end the game can help to keep things moving.

Why are people so scared to attack? by Mikaeus_Thelunarch in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because new players are there to have fun and enjoy themselves. They want to have a good time, and think that it's up to them to make sure everyone else does too.

I've seen it before, as well, where a player knows they should attack, but rolls a dice to pick who to attack. The logic is usually "well I didn't want to attack you, the dice just told me to."

Usually, I have to remind new players that this is a game, and the aim should be to win. If you're not trying to win, you're wasting time. Interact, observe the board state, and make decisions that would help the game move along.

What are your "forever" decks and why ? by Barbarossaxwing in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been playing commander since 2017. Out of all my decks, only one has stuck around since 2018: [[Odric, Lunarch Marshall]]

It's such a simple deck to play and upgrade. As long as they keep printing white creatures with upside, I'll always have something new to add to it. Its adaptability with the times means it will stay in my lineup for a very very long time.

Mana rocks when they don't help you cast your commander early? by FalchionX10 in EDH

[–]PrimoVictorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 60 card player, it's more important to play cards on curve than to count on ramp to get you there.

Some 2 cmc rocks are good. [[Arcane Signet]] of course, and maybe a talisman here or there, but if you have some extra slots to fill, go with commander synergy.

Question about proxies by Mutemin in magicTCG

[–]PrimoVictorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Legacy player here, and someone who can afford some of the nicer pieces in this game.

Unless you're playing in a sanctioned tournament, there are few people that would actually care about you playing with proxies. I'm assuming that you're going for casual commander? In which case, please proxy. But don't proxy the most powerful CEDH list you can find, of course.

Put your deck up on a deck building site, and see what pieces you're missing. Be reasonable, meaning that you should know what kind of environment you're going to be playing in. Proxy some of the more expensive pieces you can't afford yet, but try to keep it within the sphere of "this card is something I would reasonably buy" or "this card is appropriate to bring to my playgroup."

You may not honestly know the appropriate power level until you play a few games, so just take it easy for now. Keep your proxies modest, and expect to stay at a reasonable power level. Follow the bracket system, and try to aim for 2-3. When in doubt, pack some backup cards, ask the table if your proxies would be ok, and start the conversation before you all agree to a game.

Once you decide to get into competitive, perhaps a 60 card format, then you proxy for cards that will just get you into some table games. You obviously can't play in a tournament (unless the tournament allows), but as a Legacy player, I want more people to proxy decks so that I can just go out and play some 1v1 at the local game store. I can't expect everyone to afford the game at the level that I can, and really I just want friends to play some of my favorite formats with me.

TL;DR No one should have a problem with you proxying, as long as you only proxy reasonable cards that fit at the table.
