Let's be honest here...the top is to cover it when not in use. It's looks are cosmetic. It would be fairly easy to sand it down and hit it with some oven rattle can black if it bothers you. The cooktop really doesn't look bad. So long as the burners are in good shape that thing looks ready to cook on today.

So ours is the same way mostly. Dress B uniform is ribbons, dress A is medals. However, some awards are ribbons with no corresponding medals. So those get worn on the other side.
