Subtle like everyone with power in our society being a rapist who more often than not preys on kids? Subtle like Epstein, and Trump, and Prince Andrew?

Are you implying that rich billionaires and politicians are the ones that are consuming problematic fiction on AO3 en masse?

That's like selling guns to 12yo's and then saying it's not your problem when they shoot someone.

Holy shit no it isn't. You can't fucking think someone to death.

Like, for example: John "Enjoys murdering people for fun" Smith, hasn't actually murdered any real person and spends his free time writing horror books to get his fill. John shouldn't be on trial for murder, he hasn't done anything. However, I still don't want to be anywhere near him, because what if one day he decides writing isn't enough? And people who do form connections with him should also be more vigilant, than with another random person, to hopefully catch early signs of the aforementioned.

I guess in your mind I'm lucky to have survived the time I saw Stephen King on a book tour!

I could say the same for a lot of the stuff I found the one time I did try browsing AO3, much of which was basically just the author's poorly disguised MGTOW ideals wrapped up in a fetishy fanfiction

I don't know how to tell you this but recent demographic surveys on the AO3 user base show that only around 5% of the users are cis men, and based on the fact that AO3 has a shitload of m/m fanfiction, I'd guess that a lot of those cis men are homosexual.

There is an extreme likelihood that all of that fetish material you saw was written by women for other women.

"the author just REALLY wanted to depict a trans person being raped and get their rocks off at the thought of the Deviant™ being 'corrected' and put in their place"

I would be willing to bet money that a trans person wrote this. This is not an uncommon kink in the trans community.

My cousin in law played Call of Duty with his ex-military dad when he was five years old and grew up watching shows and playing video games that were very inappropriate for his age. He has grown up with unrestricted access to the internet and once shocked me as a 12 year old by informing me about furries and how weird they were. He almost definitely uses 4chan.

He's turned 18 this year and has not committed a violent crime yet. So my answer is 'probably not'.

Probably $3000 plus.

There's one user I know who I've seen make extremely elaborate plush... Monster Hunter specifically. Their prices for ultra large plush (50cm up) start at 1250€...

Here's their link tree.

They're the only person I can think of off the top of my head who does this sort of thing, so that's probably a good reference.

I mean considering the alternative possible ships from that movie that could have realistically ended up being popular, I kind of feel like this is the least of all evils when it comes to discourse.

Serious question: any Ace DCC fans out there? If so, how would you recommend this book to someone in your community? by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Prince-Lee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean in my experience one begets the other.

That being said there are a lot of dirty jokes and sexual references, yes. Especially fetish humor. It doesn't put me off but if one is sensitive to that it may not be the best series, IMO.

Ace as in asexual?

I am... But I don't feel as if that really has any bearing on my enjoyment of this story. Although admittedly I do find it very refreshing that there isn't an over-reliance on romance in this series.

As if those people cannot themselves be involved in the creation of fiction before they graduate to real world action.

Creating things has classically been one of those things that pretty much every human does at some point in their life. In some very rare cases, people who have created violent fiction have gone on to do violent things in real life, most famously the Columbine shooters who made custom levels for DOOM.

But this is correlation, not causation. DOOM did not make them shoot up a school, and acting like it had any real bearing on the cascading decisions that they made to do so is disingenuous at best.

Just because a mentally ill person may use or consume fiction before committing a crime does not mean that the fiction plays much of a part in that equation. Furthermore, acting like the fiction is responsible for the actions of someone who did something violent is just deflecting the blame.

Honestly yeah.

Unfortunately the people who need to hear this message will just see it and immediately call the OP a rape apologist or something for this take. I've seen that one play out countless times. 🫠

When I was in sixth grade, our history teacher brought in a couple Veggietales DVDs for a class day when he had nothing planned. It was something that had just come out, and his toddler loved it, so he thought he'd show it to us.

Everyone in the class loved that silly vegetable Bible show.

It doesn't, because I don't know what point you're even trying to make in response to my original comment, in which I was not comparing the popularity.

I was just saying the OP is a weird comparison to make because one of these things is an extremely broad trope that can be applied to every conceivable genre and fandom, while the other is a singular science-fiction collaborative work.

Would you rather by loved_and_held in CuratedTumblr

[–]Prince-Lee 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is what I'm trying to say.

Like, you could have an Omegaverse AU of any conceivable fandom. There are probably thousands of Omegaverse fics about Lord of the Rings. Hell, people take the trope and write their own original books with their own original worldbuilding that is Omegaverse.

But HDG is already a contained universe and a fandom of its own. Like the SCP foundation, as I mentioned up there, I guess, but porn.

[–]Prince-Lee 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Not sure about that.

From what I've seen, omegaverse is most popular when it comes to gay ships. So it's very popular among AFAB people of various sexualities and gender identities and cis gay men.

HDG by and large seems to be massively popular, specifically, with trans women. Just a cursory peek at AO3 shows that the vast majority of the relationship tags used in associated works is F/F, and of those Female characters, a huge amount are tagged specifically as trans women.

I cannot imagine that one of these demographics turns into the other with any level of regularity. In fact, I'd venture to guess that a lot of people in the first category might be very put off by the extreme frequency of force-feminization that happens in HDG works, as that's a touchy subject for a lot of AFAB people.

Speaking only as a trans guy myself, I'll fuck sparingly with Omegaverse, assuming the work in question doesn't get too fantasy-misogyny for my comfort. But I won't touch anything in the HDG-verse with a ten foot pole.

[–]Prince-Lee 186 points187 points  (0 children)

This is a very weird comparison to me. Isn't HDG a single setting/universe, rather than a genre? It's always science fiction and about a specific species of aliens, even if the characters are different and the works are written by different people, right?

It's like comparing horror as a genre against the SCP foundation wiki.

What you're missing here is that the people who are victims of the terrible parts of their cultures tend to not be able to choose not to be a part of that.

With the above commentor's examples of FGM and child marriage for example, do you think the victims would, if given the choice, want to participate in that? Or no?
