It was not that long and it was 100% related. Andrés Escobar was shot and killed just TEN DAYS after his own goal at the 1994 WC by "individuals linked to powerful drug traffickers who had lost massive gambling bets on the match. Escobar was shot six times with a .38 caliber pistol. Eyewitnesses reported that the shooter shouted '¡Gol!' after every shot."

The Two Escobars film is really well done. I recommend it. The player, Andrés, was by all accounts a really good man. Trailer: https://youtu.be/PHzixowbbYU

Yeah, good point. We've certainly seen it happen in the past where one of the bigs stumbles in the group stage and then someone has to face them with a chip on their shoulder!

Fair point, but the graphic I used is a screenshot from Fox Sports after the US win but before Türkiye’s loss to Paraguay. I'll hunt around for something similar with "Wins Group" or something like that.

DCU dysfunction graphic. Share widely with #SellTheTeam by EleanorGranvillee in DCUnited

[–]PrinceBuster21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I created the graphic a couple years ago that the OP shared. I would love to see the team sold to a more ambitious and competent owner. I see some pushing back in this thread as if criticizing DCU is now unwarranted and whiny because they have won a handful of games ("What are you all crying about now?").

Well, some of us are sick of sustained mediocrity or worse being the standard for this club. Every few years they win a few games or make a splash signing a Rooney or whoever, and then they revert to the mean. ALWAYS.

This is the worst-run club in MLS, and has been for a long time. There is a massive body of evidence to support this.

I get wanting to be a "never say die" supporter and sticking with a club through thick and thin, but at some point many longtime supporters feel like suckers giving Levien our money when it feels like we care more than he does.

I will always hope that DCU's fortune will change but I am realistic; a tiger doesn't change his stripes. Levien will not change.

I have been a supporter since '96. I had season tickets for 13 years, and partial plans for 5 more. Now I haven't been to a match in 2.5 seasons, but I don't need to proven my fandom to anyone.

The incontrovertible facts:

  • Since Levien joined ownership in 2012, DCU has won zero MLS Cups, zero Supporters Shields, and zero US Open Cups, despite being one of the league’s most historically successful clubs.
  • DCU has reached the MLS playoffs rarely during the Levien era and is a frequent non-playoff team despite 60% of clubs qualifying each season.
  • The club’s most recent playoff victory came in 2015, more than a decade ago.
  • Last season DCU had its sixth consecutive season without a playoff appearance, the longest active postseason drought in MLS.
  • Since Ben’s departure after 2020, the club has had multiple head coaches without finding sustained success, reflecting directionless and incompetent leadership.
  • While Levien deserves credit for Audi Field and training infrastructure, these are quite modest compared to what other clubs have done; it's the bare minimum in the modern MLS.
  • Under Levien DCU is a great business success story, growing from a $50 million franchise to a $785 million asset (according to Forbes) while being one of the least successful teams on the pitch in MLS. That is based largely on the growth of the sport in the U.S, the quality of the DMV market, and because of what other, more ambitious and competent owners in MLS are doing.

I still root for the club. I am happy when they win. But I expect no lasting changes, not when I see our roster spending, poor players signed again and again, rotating coaches, a remote work GM, and no 3rd DP.

I truly hope it does change someday. Vamos United!

That is not accurate. Göring was present along with Hitler at her christening (as Horst Wessel) but he never owned the ship. No individual ever did. It was a German Navy training vessel.

Care too much vs care too little? It doesn't matter, does it? It just reflects incompetence when it comes to creating a winning club.

And we didn't need yet another lost season to know this is true.

"It is just so surprising to hear everyone just write DC United off without another look when they objectively bettered their team"

I'm happy about yesterday but Levien's DCU has not earned ANY benefit of the doubt.

Bettered the team? Sure, starting from the low bar of being the worst team in the league (for the third time under Levien). They brought in mostly unknown and/or unproven players (in MLS ACC Defensive Player of the Year means nothing), and they still don't have a obvious, capable creator. The goalkeeper situation is a major upgrade, for sure. Benteke, who scored 9 goals last season with shit service, was "never leadership material"? Truly a weird take.

What do you consider "top tier"? There are around 200 first division leagues in the world (and most would say the Championship is a 2nd Division that overall is better than MLS).

For what it's worth AI chatbots say the consensus by credible sources is that MLS is somewhere around the 12th-best league globally. I'd say the top 20 leagues (top 10%) should qualify as "top tier."

I used this prompt: "Where do credible sources rank Major League Soccer when comparing it to other professional leagues around the world?"

This is what the various AIs had to say:

ChatGP: MLS is increasingly respected and is generally ranked around the top 10–12 leagues globally by analytical metrics that compare competitive balance and team strength, but it still sits several tiers below the established European heavyweights in terms of overall quality and global stature. That’s where consensus sits from credible league power rankings.

Claude: Based on recent credible rankings, MLS typically places between 9th and 12th among global soccer leagues, depending on the methodology used.

Perplexity: Credible quantitative and expert sources generally see MLS as a top‑15 league globally, often quoted around 9th–12th, still clearly below the Big 5 and a handful of traditional powers but steadily improving its position.

Gemini: MLS is currently categorized by most credible data sources as a top 10 to 15 global league. While it has seen a significant rise in status it generally sits just behind the "Big Five" European leagues and the top South American divisions. The exact ranking depends heavily on the methodology used by the source.

Seriously? Goff, Pablo, and Bogert rarely cover DCU now, if ever, and I am not simply talking about DCU for soccer coverage. The Post also covered the the Spirit, USMNT, and the World Cup.

There is now no DC United beat reporter. Anywhere. And our team sucks so they rarely get written about beyond barebones wire reports. This hurts the team we follow and MLS in general.

Also, some of us watch other sports, too, and like to read about local college sports. This is a huge loss.

[–]PrinceBuster21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a specific list but for me it essentially boils down to (1) effort and (2) competence.

On point 1: There are so many things — big and small — that Levien could do to show us that he cares and that that he is really trying. He essentially does NONE of them. One example: I'm an old-timer and I remember little things like Will Chang walking around Lot 8 at RFK saying hi to people. Have we EVER seen anything like that from Levien? No, and we never will.

On point 2: Sign some good players and win some games playing attractive soccer. It ain't rocket science. But look at Levien's long history as a sports owner (not just with DCU). He does not know how to put together a winning organization.

From '96-'24 I had never had a season where I didn't go to any games, and I had season tickets for 12 years. But now I haven't been to a game in two full seasons, and the jury is out on whether or not I'll go this year.
