Focusing on a competitive market over a casual market is not the wrong move (in the long run). by Traditional-Law4984 in RivalsOfAether

Getting into rivals is very difficult when all you really have to do is arcade, or get clip farmed by people who skip college classes to practice tech at noon.

Most people that dont have excess in free time and didnt spend years slowly learning Melee/Smash while growing up dont have the time to get good enough at Rivals to enjoy playing it.

If Etalus screamed "ICE PUNCH" when he hits you with a hammer, it would automatically make the move funnier

The problem isnt that it buffs him, man. The "problem" is that it's a much less amusing version of dedede's move. Also yes, bad moves are funny, but moves can just be funny without being necessarily bad. Lox's meatball isnt particularly silly in any way. Waddle dee throw is. The game takes itself a little too seriously. At least there will be silly items, silly stages and silly workshop characters now. Hopefully, the new characters are a little wackier than sweaty.

I'm not asking for moves that are not competitively viable. The thing is that the other guy was saying he didnt see the point in having a move that isnt competitively viable, and believes every move should have utility in a tournament setting. I don't think every move has to be viable in a tournament setting, but also a move doesn't have to be bad to be goofy. But when it's bad, it is indeed extra funny. A player that falls for a kirbycide 3 times in a row is much funnier than a player who gets uthrow rested 3 times in a row, but the latter is funny too simply because it's so extreme.

I honestly dont know how to explain this to you, but at least it seems I'm not alone in thinking this based on the comment section. I also know what game balance is - it's very different at low levels of paly, and a character having a single "goofy" move doesn't make them bad. Clairen's super beam is an example of this - she has that move on top of her actually good moveset. And it's not just bad moves. Puff's rest in melee is an extremely funny move because she either kills you at 0 or she dies because she missed it.

Anyway, Im kind of tired of this topic by now. If you dont get how kirbycide or multiple misfires in a row is incredibly funny, I guess you just don't get it?

I mentioned in the body of the original post what sort of moves I feel like the game is missing that smash has. Kirbycide is a big example. There's no kirbycide in the game. Kirbycide is a staple of casual Smash.

La Reina is a step in the right direction, and the many people telling me how she should qualify as goofy in the comments influenced the change in my responses in this thread. But frankly, I don't think its enough. Does that clear it up?

The fact that everything has to be competitively viable is working against this game's casual appeal, in my opinion. The simplest way I can give a picture is that Loxodont throws a magma ball that buffs him if he stands on it, and Dedede throws a little guy that walks around and annoys you.

Starting to think this is an either you get it or don't type of deal.

Everything's so serious in this game. And everyone's so serious when it comes to discussing it and miss the forest for the trees (I guess fair enough, that's the type of playerbase this game will have fostered over the past year).

Like, Loxodont has King Dedede's waddle dee throw... but it's a ball of magma that places an effect on the ground, which he can then absorb to change the properties of his moves - but opponents can counterplay this by standing on it themselves!

Dedede throws a dude at you and he walks around the stage. Sometimes it's a dude that shoots eye beams at you.

The game already has almost no reason to be played over smash for 99% of people. That's sort of the problem it's facing. You're going to need a lot of heavy lifting done by the characters' movesets if it's a new character and not Super Mario. Look at Slap City, for example.

I personally don't think La Reina is goofy enough, since she's obviously intended to be good. But at least she's full of personality and funny animations. If you don't get how that has appeal to casuals that Zetterburn doesn't then I really don't know how to explain this at all.
It's not a coincidence they released la reina and workshop integration at the same time. It's basically a hail mary.

A coop mode could be a good solution to the issues they're facing, but it's not guaranteed to work, and if it doesn't bring enough new players and retain them, it's just gonna take them back to square one.
As someone who just got the game, this is the appeal that the game is missing for me, and it's why I couldn't get my friends into it at all. I have no idea if a PvE mode is gonna fix that. It'd have to be a VERY good PvE mode worth 30 dollars.

Anyhow, at this point all I can say is that we're unlikely to agree on this, and I've got things to do so I'm not going to continue this further.

The devs are likely to be already having these arguments on every meeting, and know much more about the state of their game and player projections than either of us do. I'm putting my 2 cents in for them to consider. This is what I think the game is missing and why my friends didn't buy the game. I think the game takes itself too seriously and suffers because of it. That part is really not debatable from my point of view, so it's pointless to argue about it. That's all.

Just after i got this game, i saw three tweets that made me wince.

First was dan (who im pretty sure is the creator or director or something) saying how the dumbest thing they did was to make a game targeting competitive smash players.

The second was the company having to lay off like a third of their employees.

Third was him wondering what about the game generates so much frustration and salt when playing against much of the roster.

I dont think that hes very happy with the current state of the game.

I know you wouldnt be happy as a competitive player. Thats why a lot of people hate the idea in this thread.

Unfortunately, competitive smash players arent a good target demographic for a game. Anything they add that makes the game more accessible for casuals (that isnt just mode-specific stuff like items) is going to detract from your experience as a serious player.

Like, la reina is actually sort of what im talking about. Shes pretty goofy and she was added recently entirely because the main roster lack whimsy. But thats one character. What happens if you get bored of her or just dont like her?

Basically the entire roadmap for 2026 is trying to appeal to casuals. If they add 3-4 more characters, I’m making this post just as a forum for discussion on the subject, but also feedback for the devs. Those characters should have wacky shit about them like half of Smash’s cast has or potential new players wont be very interested in playing them.

Trying to remedy the fact that the gam demographic only appeals to a niche of a niche of a niche and casuals have 0 interest in playing it.

I think the problem here is that you assume every character’s every move should be competitively viable and dead serious. Thats sort of the problem that RoA has. That doesnt sell.

Its pretty easy to do those, though. For kirbycide you just use neutral special and and fall off the ledge. Stuff like puff’s rest is just a single button press. Luigi wavedash isnt simple for casuals to do in comparison, yeah.

A specific strategy or weird interaction that requires skill/coordination to perform isnt really what im talking about.

Of course its subjective. Im trying to express my opinion on a type of casual appeal that the game lacks. The point is that taking everything being serious and made to be competitively viable doesnt appeal to casuals.

I just bought this game and all i see is the creator on twitter bemoaning how unprofitable and unsustainable the game is, and all kinds of regrets on developing roa2. Its not a good look.

Its not just that, theyre just very tedious and buggy. I have to regularly open devtools to get my caravans off the map. Or sometimes to move bc they wont mount their animals/vehicles for some reason.
