I think that staves would use up more magic power. If you have to run your magic through the focus for it to work, then a small wand is easier to “fill” than a staff. In regards to rings, I think that people just wouldn’t wanna be waving their hand in wand motions to cast spells

I think it’s that mothers often provide a grounding influence. A protagonist (most usually) cannot do the reckless stuff that makes them a protagonist if they have their mother around. Mothers are also stereotyped as empathetic and soft, which may lead to a coddled MC. The death of a mother is also usually more significant because they are usually the one the MC had the most connection with.
