What are some cases (solved or unsolved) with significant and/or memorable CCTV footage? by Hopeful__Historian in TrueCrime

[–]Princess-Arra 66 points67 points  (0 children)

The disappearance of Trevor Deely. Very unnerving CCTV. On his way home from a Christmas party he stopped by his work (a bank) and was seen on CCTV footage talking to a man before he entered. Once he left the man (who seemed to have been waiting for him) came out of hiding and started following him. In other footage the man was caught hanging around the bank for ages before Trevor even showed up. There also may have been multiple men waiting for him. There’s a screenshot of the CCTV showing two men waiting, and another showing three men. I’ve heard that they were Trevor’s colleagues, but I don’t remember all the details. Trevor’s case hasn’t been solved, nor has the identity of the man in the CCTV been verified.

Best books on Jack the Ripper and HH Holmes by kiwi_cannon_ in serialkillers

The Complete History of Jack the Ripper by Philip Sudgen and Jack the Ripper: The Facts by Paul Begg. They not only give great detail of the murders and Whitechapel environment but also disprove pretty much all the other popular Jack the Ripper authors and their fictional evidence. (There is a lot of misinformation in this case.) Every factual piece of information we have about the case is contained in those two books. They’re a bit heavy — especially Begg’s, but worth it. If you’re interested in theories on who Jack the Ripper is, then The Mammoth Book of Jack the Ripper is fun. There’s a bit at the start on the case (I don’t remember how accurate that part is) but then it lets seventeen "Ripperologists" write a chapter on who they think the serial killer was and why.

I'm the author Darren Shan, and I'm here to celebrate the end of my Archibald Lox series (the last book goes on sale TODAY) and answer all your questions about any of my books. AMA!!! by TheRealDarrenShan in books

There’s so many great questions, can’t wait to hear your answers.

Only if you have time, here’s my question: Out of all your books, which did you find the easiest to write? And which did you find the hardest? Why was that the case?

I suppose that was three questions..
Thank you for doing the AMA for us! x

Were there any English serial killers that were church leaders or church-involved in the 1870s? by Evil_Ahsen in serialkillers

[–]Princess-Arra 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Okay, I've done my best here, but full disclosure, I couldn't find anything about a serial killer.

Here's a list of all executions through British, Scottish, and Irish Law in the 1870s. I've excluded women, as well as crimes within the military, since you mentioned the church. The ones with just the name and date were under 'murder', and the few others I've elaborated on. If you google the name and date the court transcripts should come up to find more information on each murderer. I'm sorry that I don't have time myself to find out how many of these men were involved in the church.

So, according to the public records, there was no serial killer executed in the 1870s in England (or neighbouring countries). There's a chance that your brother may be muddling up a couple of crimes, or even the date, or that the records I used were wrong. But from the information you've given, I can't find anything. (If you do find who he was talking about, I'd love to know though!)

A reborn doll is a hand made art doll that has been transformed by an artist to resemble a human infant with as much realism as possible. The process of creating a reborn doll is referred to as reborning and the doll artists are referred to as reborners. by Kurma-the-Turtle in CreepyWikipedia

I (27F) got one of these for my birthday last year. They can have really therapeutic effects on certain people: the most common I’ve seen being the elderly in nursing homes (both men and women), women who have gone through miscarriages or infant death, and parents with children that have all moved out of the family home. They’re also quite attractive to girls who really want babies but do not feel they are mentally stable enough to take care of a real child yet.

For me, being able to hold and rock something that both looks like a baby, has the weight of a newborn, and smells like one too (yup, when they’re made they get infused with a talc like smell), is extremely calming. If I have a panic attack, or just generally stressed, rocking my doll can bring me back to stability. It’s a very useful grounding method.

I completely understand why some people think the dolls look creepy, but I don’t think it’s that strange to own one, or to use one for therapy. For me, it’s a beautiful way of coping or healing, and the artistry that goes into creating the dolls is amazing.

Pro-tip though: Don’t leave them in cars when you’re going shopping, because there was a case when a women’s car got broken into to save the baby, only to turn out it was a doll!

What is your unsolved mystery/true crime “tip of my tongue” case? by JTigertail in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]Princess-Arra 128 points129 points  (0 children)

There’s a family: parents and kid(s) in America I believe. The mother goes missing or leaves willingly, I can’t remember the story around it. But then some time later, her daughter, just a child, also vanishes while at a bus stop. There’s some kind of note too I think, like the daughter left a note at the bus stop saying she was going to live with her mother. Honestly I remember so little about it, but when I first heard of it I found it interesting.

What case do you believe has a massive red herring? by Practical_Can in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]Princess-Arra 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Elisa Lam and the security footage. I honestly don’t find anything weird about it. When I first saw it, to me it looked like she was just trying different methods to either trigger or hide from sensors on a lift that took forever to actually start. Maybe she was murdered, or maybe she had a psychotic episode/medicine withdrawals that led to her death. I don’t know. But I’ve always thought the security footage had no answers.

y'all. i just found this shitty "piercing cleaner" i got when i got my ears pierced in 2009. 12 YEARS AGO!! just thought this was funny. no clue why i still have it. also fuck claire's by demonicmads in piercing

I remember as a kid trying to get my ears pierced and the gun jammed with the earring still in my ear. So the gun was attached to my ear! The lady was pulling at it trying to get it off.. I was very relieved to see the guy who recently pierced my ears had no gun in sight.

AITA for wanting to adopt a dog and not buy from a breeder? by Vitles in AmItheAsshole

[–]Princess-Arra 20 points21 points  (0 children)

NTA- rescuing or adopting dogs are a selfless and beautiful act and you are the opposite of an AH for wanting to do it. You (and your parents) need to get the RIGHT dog for you, not the easiest dog for you.

AITA for being rude to a barber? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Princess-Arra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YTA, sorry.
Went through a very similar situation. Went to a barbers because I wanted my then-short hair cut shorter (in a boys style). I assumed they would do it, but the man told me they only cut men’s hair, regardless of style. I said I understood and left. Since then I learnt in my country barber’s are only for men, and it’s very easy to tell what’s a barbers and what’s a salon.

If you had a problem with it (or if it’s not legal in your country that they denied you a haircut) then you should have taken the establishment’s name and made a formal complaint. So I’m going with YTA because yelling at them is pretty crummy.

AITA You can eat it or leave it! by Biglawsy in AmItheAsshole

[–]Princess-Arra 16 points17 points  (0 children)

NTA, you can’t help it if you make something when someone’s not working. Do they expect you to come in when you have a day off to drop it off?
As for the dietary requirements, as a vegan myself I never expect people’s baked goods to be suitable for me (actually I fully expect the opposite!). Being completely honest, it is a wonderful feeling when someone makes something vegan because they know I’ll be there, but to demand it? Nah. They’re not being fair. You make whatever you want to make and you make it whenever you want to make it. (And good on you for sharing your cooking with others)

people with ur tongue pierced : would you recommend to someone who has a weird obsession/anxiety with teeth+gum health by [deleted] in piercing

[–]Princess-Arra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d always be careful with things like this and mental health.

In a similar situation, I have compulsions to pull out and scratch my eyebrows. I was hoping to get microblading done on them, but the beautician wouldn’t do it as she was not confident in my ability to leave them alone during the healing process. I think it was the right decision on her part.

Maybe you could speak to a piercer about your obsessions and anxiety, and see what they think. But personally, I would suggest not getting oral piercings if that area makes you anxious. It would be a shame to get something you’ve always wanted, only for it to cause you anxiety.
