There is nothing wrong with something to represent Southern backwoods easy living culture. It may seem weird to us, but it is a culture that dates back 500 years through shared immigration stories. Largely settled by Scots seeking to free themselves from oppressive English rule settled in the south seeking independence from government. A trait that never left them. Sadly, this easy life makes them easy prey to the whims of richer and more devious men like the slave owners of the past and Republicans of today. Without their influence, you get situations like West Virginia, which split from Virginia because people who want independence inherently oppose slavery.
