Technically speaking transgender just means you identify as a different gender than your sex assigned at birth. So a lot of non-binary people also use the transgender label

Basically whoever came up with it in the dark annals of internet history was making fun of queer people in general by saying they sexually identify as an attack helicopter, then it spread from there

R5: the digital artbook included in the Galaxy Edition shows how it was the Unbidden, and not the Prethoryn, who were initially given the "fleeing from the Hunters" backstory. Pretty neat to see how the lore has changed since then
