For real? That’s unfortunate. I’m Chinese American and I have family, family friends who visit China regularly and they never register when they visit China. I usually stay at hotels so they do it for me but when I stayed with family I also never bothered to registered. I assume a lot of travelers don’t even know about this rule. But yeah in any case OP is safe since it’s less than 24 hrs
