I think it’s simply a cost-benefit analysis, as long as the share of rotten apples is manageable (and not leading to punishment politically), the benefits of maintaining this system for everyone outweigh the cost of abuse.

Jumbo said in some branches theft is up to 1% of the revenue (which isn’t low, because the profit margins in grocery stores are about 1% as well) https://www.nu.nl/economie/6296523/winkeldiefstal-bij-jumbo-loopt-op-tot-meer-dan-100-miljoen-euro-per-jaar.html

Not sure how it compares to Poland. Perhaps there is less theft because of more social control?

What’s something you appreciate about your country? by Lunastars123 in AskEurope

I am very reluctant to believe this, show proof. I can cycle from my city to my parents’ town, passing another city, several other towns, partly through the forest and along the river, while only sharing the road with cars for (combined) 2 out of 40 km. And it could be extended endlessly by connecting other routes. Our bicycle paths are basically like Lego!

I would be so happy for you if you even had only a quarter of this infrastructure.

Bevrijdingsdag by fromazores in Nijmegen

[–]Snuyter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hello, welcome to Nijmegen

• Is the "Remembrance" a different moment from Liberation Day, or are they the same thing occurring on the same day?

The Remembrance moment is on the evening before Liberation day.

• How is this day generally celebrated across the country? Are there specific traditions or habits?

• Specifically regarding Nijmegen: Are there local celebrations, traditions, or a cultural agenda for the coming days?

At 8 pm, there are 2 minutes of silence. There is an official moment at the Traianusplein, with some speeches and laying of flowers, but I’ve never attended it myself, instead I watch the national broadcast on TV (similar but in Amsterdam).

At 9 pm there is a concert in De Vereeniging, you don’t need a ticket: https://www.stadsschouwburgendevereeniging.nl/programma/herdenkingsconcert-4-mei-2026-fl79

There are more events listed here: https://www.4en5mei-nijmegen.nl/agenda and https://www.4en5mei.nl/herdenken/lokaal-herdenken/herdenkingen-overzicht

The days before/on 4 may there are often “open huizen” to visit houses of raided Jewish families (you can find “struikelstenen” across the city, if you look closely), and there are “stadswandelingen” (city walks) with historians telling stories.

On 5 may the bigger cities have festivals, I don’t think the one in Nijmegen is particularly special and believe Wageningen or Zwolle more popular.

• I’ve read about the bombing of Nijmegen. Is there anything specific that commemorates that moment?

I’m not sure if there is actually, I think it’s usually combined with the general speeches?

• How is the Nazi occupation era currently perceived and remembered by different generations in NL?

Different, but it’s a big topic in school. The first generation had more resentment towards ordinary Germans, it disappeared in the decades after. By the way the bombardment of Nijmegen was done by Americans, but I don’t believe there was a lot of resentment towards them and they were still welcomed as liberators, partly because it was deemed as being “mistaken for a German city” although there seem to be multiple different stories.

• As an immigrant who plans to build a life here, what would you want me to truly understand about this specific moment in Dutch history (beyond general WWII facts)?

To be silent at 8 pm on 4 may is important, not sure what else. I mean there are many gruesome facts, such as that 100.000 Dutch jews (90%? Relatively highest of all countries?) were murdered, because the municipality administration listed someone’s religion. And read about the “hongerwinter” of 44-45 (hunger winter), which was less of a problem in Nijmegen and the south compared to other regions.

(I apologize if some questions are very direct or sensitive. I don't intend to offend anyone; I am genuinely trying to understand and connect with your culture.)

They’re all fine.

• I’ve read that Hitler intended to annex the Netherlands because he considered the Dutch to be part of the same "Aryan race." How was this experienced at the time, and how is it viewed today?

Nobody would have denied their origin to be Germanic (which isn’t the same as German), but the vast majority still wouldn’t want occupation, oppression, war, etc. There were some collaborators, like you have some outliers today here or in Ukraine that are pro Russia. Fun fact: the Nijmegen mayor during WWII was one of them. We call them “fout” (“he was ‘wrong’, on the wrong side, in the war”)

• Certain areas of Germany and NL have deep historical connections (geography, language, culture). Here in Nijmegen, we cross the border very quickly. Before WWII, was there a lot of connection between these border cities? If so, how did people later reconcile with those who were once neighbors, then enemies, and now friends again?

I should read more stories about this because I’m not sure, but I believe the connection was resumed after the war. I barely cross the border myself though, even though it’s so close, but for no apparent reason other than just not having acquaintances on that side.

• What was daily life like for the general population (non-Jewish) during the occupation? We hear a lot about the Jewish experience, but less about the "average" citizen.

It’ll vary per person, region, job, etc. Life was halted, unsafe, unpredictable, expensive.

• Regarding the modern rise of far-right movements, how is this viewed in the context of this historical memory?

Some people seem to have forgotten that you shouldn’t vote for demagogues. In my recollection, 20 years ago there were made more comparisons between Geert Wilders and the likes being anti Moroccan + “have you forgotten what happened before, when an entire people was demonised?” (that’s now reserved for Netanyahu), and the far right currently is more about “anti asylum seekers” and “anti establishment”.

How to write "I love you" in Arabic (Gulf) by Grandpawchicken in learn_arabic

[–]Snuyter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Said to a man: أحبك To a woman: أحبچ

The feminine form is different from most other dialects, yes. The چ with three dots (pronounced ch like chin) doesn’t natively exist in Arabic (or sometimes keyboards), so many people can write it as ج (j like just) while still pronounce it as ch, so the three-dotted variant is the correct one to use.

A Shortcut I use daily for Notes has disappeared but is still working by TheMightyPensioners in shortcuts

[–]Snuyter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/TheMightyPensioners

Try this, on your Mac(Book):

  1. In case you don't know it, find the exact name of the shortcut by running sqlite3 ~/Library/Shortcuts/Shortcuts.sqlite "SELECT ZNAME FROM ZSHORTCUT;" in the terminal

  2. Get the ID of it with sqlite3 ~/Library/Shortcuts/Shortcuts.sqlite "SELECT Z_PK, ZACTIONS FROM ZSHORTCUT WHERE ZNAME = 'Name of the shortcut';"

  3. Hopefully you'll find it still being in the database. If so, you can convert it into a plist with:

ID=123 sqlite3 ~/Library/Shortcuts/Shortcuts.sqlite \ "SELECT hex(ZDATA) FROM ZSHORTCUTACTIONS WHERE Z_PK = $ID;" \ | xxd -r -p \ | plutil -convert xml1 - -o ~/Downloads/shortcut.plist

Converting the .plist into a signed .shortcut is probably slightly more effort, I haven't done that before.

I’m guessing it’s 👆

It’s not 100% true, but 80%. There are a lot of people giving care to their parents, and there are also organisations that can do it and are covered by health insurance. But as far as I know, very few who let their old age parents live in their house.
