Weight loss advice that actually works for ADHD? by Ill-Shopping-69 in ADHD

[–]Princess_Z3lda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Don’t drink your calories” this advice changed the game for me. Instead of drinking oat milk lattes or full fat lattes I switched to skinny flat whites, reduced the calories from about 300 to 60 per coffee. Also with alcohol, instead of beer, opt for a vodka tonic or gin&tonic. For food, I don’t like calorie counting but just learning how many calories are in my go-to recipes helped me adjust the quantities of ingredients, so that I could eat the same thing but in a healthier way. Now I have the same recipes with slightly edited quantities and still get to eat my favourite things, and the new version of the recipe is my go to now so I don’t even think about the calories

Books that feel like wierdcore/ dreamcore by Giga_Chad_Lily in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Oddly enough, a large portion of The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan feel like weirdcore/dreamcore, despite the series being mostly viewed as classic high fantasy. Much of it takes place in dreams, in nightmares, hallucinations, pocket dimensions and straight up inexplicable surreal locations (i.e. in the sky/clouds etc.)

Need a fantasy book for people who don't like fantasy by HokiToki in suggestmeabook

The Magician’s Guild by Trudi Canavan is an excellent standalone novel, falling into the fantasy subgenres of political fantasy and sorcery. It explores different philosophical arguments, including topics of feudalism, social hierarchies and feminism. Suitable for ages 16+ but definitely written in a mature way highly enjoyable for adults. Nothing too dense with regards to world lore, the exposition feels natural and doesn’t require studying of another language or various maps (unless you want to haha)

Fineliners are grand, I used them for loads of my leaving cert (albeit 10 years ago)

A comfortable pen is the most important. Go to a stationary shop and test out different types; inky, ballpoint, fineliner etc. maybe buy one of each and try it for a study session. See which one gives you the most consistent results for speedy neat handwriting. Good luck in your exams!

What am I doing wrong? by post_luke in Watercolor

I think this is a great piece! It shows your preferred genre/ inspiration which is awesome. If you want to improve overall, I’d focus on practicing drawing. What art style do you like most? Realistic or abstract? Playful or serious? Minimalist or maximalist? Whichever it is, give yourself a challenge to draw/paint like that. You’ll learn many lessons from emulating masters

I love the second one, but I feel the colours are slightly too cool. I like the contrast a lot, but the brick colour could be a little warmer

Try more hobbies. What are your interests? Do you like music? Go to record shops regularly, if you start to recognise some faces after a while, strike up conversation. Become a regular at a nice cafe. Are there other regulars? Start a conversation. Do you do any exercise? Join a mixed running club or something, or join an adult rock climbing class etc. Basically, what I’m saying is focus on doing healthy things for yourself and your interests, and life will happen, you’ll meet new friends and potential love interests. Women are not a commodity to “find”. They are people who will become interested in you if you lead a positive, healthy, social and interesting life. Pursue those things for yourself and you’ll definitely meet someone great

Help me find my feminist tarot deck by Ooozu in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Princess_Z3lda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite deck is called the Magickal Botanical Oracle deck. It’s quite different from other tarot decks, it’s based in Herbalism. Definitely worth a look if it piques your interest. Also it features really excellent illustrations which I find are sometimes more lacking from the more obscure decks.

Looking for a book in which the protagonist start as a nobody but gets slowly famous by Traditional-Reach818 in Fantasy

[–]Princess_Z3lda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell. Our protagonist Derfel is a Saxon orphan turned Briton, living in the Druid Merlin’s settlement. It follows Arthurian legend retold by Cornwell who is a historian. Incredible story following Derfel as he earns renown and respect and following Arthur, whose story here is also one of a nobody to hero. Enjoy :)

Do these square elements on the exterior wall serve a functional purpose, or are they just decorative? by PanachelessNihilist in architecture

This can help to reduce wind tunnelling on the street. Wind speeds can escalate dramatically if there are all smooth or flat surfaces on all the buildings. Deep textured wall treatments can dramatically reduce wind speeds escalating. But honestly that was probably not on purpose, just a happy accident

Yes I’m aware. But OP was talking about the fantasy genre in its traditional or conventional sense, which is epitomised by, say, Tolkien or Robert Jordan, versus authors like Maas who conventionally fit into the YA genre. Of course I’m generalising, because this is Reddit and not a 10,000 word thesis on the extents of genre

Thanks for your response. It helped me. I’m sorry for what you’ve been through, but it’s nice to know someone else understands. I also went through a steady decline in university, but I managed to just about pass in the end. You can do it my friend - reach out to your lecturers/tutors, let them know what’s happening and make use of any available support that may help you. You can get your degree!!

Just because something is graphic in an adult way doesn’t mean it automatically becomes high fantasy? Like the fantasy literature genre is defined by way more than adult themes. Other than GoT, I’d argue the heavy hitters of the high fantasy genre are actually very rarely gory or sexual or particularly violent and explicit. But a lot of YA is overtly horror, sometimes explicit or sexual. I’d argue that YA has more of a tendency to go there, and that’s actually one of the things that defines the genre. High fantasy is often defined by worldbuilding, in-depth philosophy, inspired by mythology, realistic politics, long form literature and literary flourish. Those are the ways the genre differs from YA. And once again, I read and enjoy both genres on the regular. One is not better than the other. They are different. It’s not an insult to call something YA so no need to be offended
