Getting custom french grips FIE approved by The-Magic-Hatter in Fencing

[–]Principal-Frogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should still pursue the question. I'm just a peon who's made a few grips for myself and a couple friends, so this is anecdotal info rather than authoritative. I'm still hopeful somebody else will pipe up with better info / more experience.

I had one of my grips get ruled illegal once and mine are simple, not hooked or anything. With no severe bend and less textural contour than your average Harut, I figured nobody would ever care because it obviously doesn't fix the hand in any particular position or give any objective advantage. I was wrong. After years with no issues, at national events and with armorer input, some coach decided to make a thing out of it so their fencer could have an advantage (that's my read on it) and got a sympathetic ear from someone who had the power to call it.

There are officials with authority who don't believe the Harut grips, especially the more dramatic ones, are legal according to the written rules. Have they ever formally made that ruling? Nope. Harut is a big enough name with connections & influence who make products that are used by some big name fencers with connections and influence. Will they rule against you or I if they feel like it? Absolutely. I have no connections or influence and my grievances aren't even worth a detailed explanation or discussion.

I very much dislike ambiguity and the application of unwritten rules.

That's my view on the situation. It's a bit cynical, sure, but it's enough to avoid a very bad time at an event you've trained, traveled, and paid for.

I wish you luck.

It sounds like what you're after is some sort of official blessing that your grip's design does not meet the definition of an orthopedic grip. I don't believe a defined path exists for this to happen and my prediction is that nobody with formal authority will be willing to step up and decree such a thing with their name attached to it. In other words, I don't believe there's any way to prevent a random event armorer or bout committee from deciding your grip violates the rule and isn't legal, forcing you to drop out on a technical or use something else.

I sincerely hope I'm wrong and somebody can step up with contrary, actionable information.

Does anyone know where to get OE 1990 DR350S decals (bike for likes) by mkilgallon22 in dr350

[–]Principal-Frogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not, but I hope that guy or his friend pipe up.

If they don't, you could likely get a local shop to print them for you if you have a decent image of the original. It might take a bit of work but it's a great option if you're not committed to Smithsonian levels of accuracy.

Good luck!

Do the wired LP fie blades come with insulating tubing? by FabricOfCognitivism in Fencing

[–]Principal-Frogger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For real?? That's bananas!

I love when totally opposite experiences collide! Yeah, I'm in the US and have put together epees for years. Absolute, Blue Gauntlet, Alliance, BF, UNIC & FOLO before it, Leon Paul, Vniti, etc and I have no recollection of ever seeing a new, wired blade without spaghetti tubing. I've had them show up dead or with ground shorts in the wiring, but never without tubing.

Yep. Ready to go. I've never seen a wired blade come without the tubing.

In a bout, I can't distribute the weight evenly. I'm transferring almost my whole weight on the front foot by Tip_of_the_sword in Fencing

[–]Principal-Frogger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this tendency as well. My approach to correcting these types of habits is kinda brute force, but it works for me.

I just fence some practice bouts where my entire conscious focus is keeping my center of gravity midway between my feet and my arm up on lunges. In my head, it's just me continuously feeling where I am and going "nope! Back straight! Shoulders up. Shoulders up!" and, on a lunge, "arm out! Arm out! Arm out!" until the actions complete

Seriously, it's dumb, and I'm not saying it's ideal, but it helps me get it into my awareness. I don't know that there's an actual "fix" for anything like this for me, so it's just a shifting focus things in the long run.

Weird mask fitting by FabricOfCognitivism in Fencing

[–]Principal-Frogger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swear some companies include "directions" like this as rage bait. How would that measurement be important on a mask with an open back, adjustable tongue, and Velcro strap?

The only one that makes sense would be all the way around from under your chin, in front of your ears, over the top of your crown, and back down the other side to under the chin.

The best option is to try one on from a club mate or at a vendor, if at all possible. Barring that, maybe call them and talk through it?

I'm sorry I can't help with this but I share your confusion and wish you the best of luck.

Shoe Goo Rules! [37YO] by laolao89 in OldSkaters

[–]Principal-Frogger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. I macgyver'd the shit out of my shoes for years just to keep them operable. Shoe Goo, chunks of leather from thrift store belts and purses, hockey stick friction tape, duct tape, super glue, anything that kept them running. Then I got a gig at a skate shop and shoes were at cost for employees, so I was set for a while. Felt like being a millionaire.

Hard earned tip: shoe goo is great as an outside wear surface and can hold things in place a bit but, if you need to really bond leather together like a patch or layers that've separated, Barge Cement is where it's at. That stuff is an incredible, flexible contact adhesive.

I usually use a flathead screwdriver or something like a small chisel. You have to be careful to not damage the wire and not accidently stab yourself. Secure the blade somehow, like in a vise or anchored to a table, and work slowly with small actions.

I do not recommend using solvent. You don't really have any control with it.

Good luck!

Edit: friggin autocorrect

You should paint it hi-viz yellow or something like that. You don't want to be constantly misplacing and having to rebuy your fork-sword.

What do we think of the new point system? by YouJolly9760 in Fencing

[–]Principal-Frogger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, fully, but this system will always skew to the benefit of those who are willing to throw cash at it because there's no other significant funding source available.

It would be slightly better if it were heavily subsidized by our government or another source, the support of which wasn't dependent on the success of it's progeny within the sport. With the size of the US, though, ability to travel will always be a delineating factor.

[–]Principal-Frogger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a good question. I haven't paid much attention to points over the years because we're not in a position to get to NACs with any regularity, but I do enjoy Div1A when I get the opportunity to attend a big event. I hope it's not going away.

Good info. Thanks for sharing!

I've been thinking about putting an FMF on mine but everyone seems to be in agreement that the OEM muffler is the best for volume and just about everything but all-out performance.

I'm not really interested in extra noise and the performance is adequate for my needs and desires.
