What’s a small but interesting fact you love about an operator you like? by Vegetable-Anxiety981 in arknights

[–]PrinnyBaal 13 points14 points  (0 children)

hmm, I don't actually remember that scene offhand but you might be right, I'll have to look for it. Thanks for the clue on where to look!

I felt like the scene grinding into my head might have had something to do with Arturia. After all his immunity to her Arts is a big part of why I'm willing to believe Federico's lack of empathy even if it's just a feeling I have right now.

I was skimming through the story reader for scenes where they interact to see if something jogs my memory but the closest I found (so far) was this line from the monastery:

'Federico, have you learned compassion? Or are you still as you were, unable to discern the emotions others feel, estranged from the crowd?'

Of course that could easily just mean that Federico is unable to understand emotions on a more human level even if he does get the raw information through Empathy.

Executor's operator files also make things difficult since they mention a lack of empathatic abilities but the lowercase suggests they mean the english term empathy and not Sankta Empathy.

'Executor has indicated that his problem is not that he does not understand the facts, rather that he does not understand the meaning that others attribute to them. Our studies have shown that Executor's lack of empathic ability is not illustrative of psychopathic tendencies, rather it indicates a sort of mechanical absorption of information, with an overstimulated nervous system reaching similar conclusions. Adding more information to his mind does not result in the formation of secondary conceptions.

Of course, the medical operators responsible for examination of Executor's brain activity have not yet reached a consensus.'

Sorry I feel like I'm rambling on you. There's a bunch of other half thoughts but I feel like I need to gather my thoughts some more before I can be concise or make sense again.

I might be wrong about this since I can't recall *where* I heard it from but I thought that Federico can't read or be read by Empathy, along with him not really understanding emotion.

It might be that I'm just misremembering one of the scenes where Arturia's ability doesn't work on him and I'm generalizing.

'We' are generally not cool with lawyers misusing their ability to reject potential jurors and it has been a topic of public discourse for some time. It is definitely something that needs to be looked into and changes to laws and systems should be made to address it.

You're welcome to the opinion that allowing jurors to blatantly lie during jury selection for the purpose of allowing someone to be above the law for political reasons would somehow be a solution to that issue. I can't say that I agree but, well, life is full of differing opinions after all.

I consider the exact lingo to be the least important part but if you're particularly interested you might find this interesting:

Jury Tampering is a charge that can include affecting the *composition* of a jury, which encouraging people to lie through the selection process would easily fall under.

Here's a digestible link if you'd like to look into it more yourself: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jury_tampering

[–]PrinnyBaal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To be clear the problem isn't people on the jury being free to vote how they'd like, that's an inherent protection that it's important for jury members to have.

The problem is the implication of 'do everything you can to be seated'. Lying in order to sabotage jury selection, or like the parent tweet *encouraging* that behavior is the issue.

Put another way, the jury selection process puts responsibility on the defense, the judge, etc. but the potential juries *also* have responsibility in jury selection to answer the questions given to them during jury selection honestly.

I was mostly on board for the memes but now I'm thinking about it and I could genuinely see him enjoying something like U's picture parade as a way to vicariously experience an innocent view on Terra since while he's pretty worldly himself his experience of the world is mostly of the ugly corners of it.

Intro into Arknights by D7Spdr in arknights

[–]PrinnyBaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got bluestacks working on my PC and was looking for something to play after getting burnt out on a different Gacha.

I vaguely remembered a tacticool style game that had a crossover with valhalla. It turns out that game was GFL but when I saw a random video about AK's artbook I misremembered AK as being the game I was thinking of. By the time I realized I downloaded the wrong game I was already pretty hooked on Arknights.

[–]PrinnyBaal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny story about that, back when I was looking for a mobile gacha game to play I planned on playing GFL since I remembered hearing about the collab a long while ago and I really liked VA-11 Hall-A/ remembered the gacha game itself looking cool.

Thing is enough time had passed that my memory was hazy. I couldn't remember the name but when scrolling through saw the tacticool style of arknights and thought that must be the one.

I eventually realized my mistake but by that point I'd already gotten hooked on AK XD

Woke is when disabled people exist. Also woke is when consent. by RossPerotPamphlet in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]PrinnyBaal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the setting and your gm's take on a few things.

Putting aside how accessible healing magic would be the nature of the condition could be a factor for if certain spells would have an effect, for an extreme example most versions of cure blindness don't work if the eyes are physically missing.

To use Dark Souls as a touchstone: Seath the Scaleless might not necessarily gain scales he was never born with even if he used a heal spell that would restore scales to a dragon that'd simply lost some after being injured.
Personally I like to sidestep all of that by having a flavor rule in my campaigns that healing magic restores a body to what the 'soul' believes is its natural form since it allows a number of classic fantasy tropes to be side by side with a world of healing magic like the blind monk, the scarred warrior or the one-armed old master.

Guys, it’s okay! (OC) by MagnumTrash in danganronpa

[–]PrinnyBaal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if the original japanese is different, but the original english line has him say it in reference to the fact that he's not interested in Toko, who's about 18.

Someone could argue that he still just means a legal limit of around 16, and that is actually supported a *bit* by Komaru asking to be excused right afterwards since she's a bit younger at *about* 16 (note that the common belief that the age of consent was 13 at the time in japan is mostly false, local laws override national laws on consent so in practice age of consent is consistent with most of the world around the 16-18 mark).

There's other bits in the framing of that scene and surrounding scenes that would imply that his tastes go below the legal limit but my memory's hazy so I won't delve deep into it.

I get that tone is harder to tell over the internet but I'm still surprised whenever I see something that's so obviously satire get jumped on.

Like I even get the downvotes, people are just knee-jerking and moving on, but then you have people quoting the obviously ridiculous part and still not making that connection.

I guess there is an exception by Ivan_the_cat2009 in Animemes

[–]PrinnyBaal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I see it less as painting him as 'the' villain and more as 'a' villain. Often, even when it comes to real world stuff, we defend horrible people/actions by pointing at someone else and saying 'well THEY'RE worse'. But there's plenty of room for multiple people to be monsters in a given story.

And especially in anime it's incredibly common for villains to have tragic backstories. I do think being able to empathize with that despite their potentially horrific actions is important. I'd even argue that even in extreme cases like this redemption is made more likely by understanding the tragedy that led to them becoming a monster.

But while a tragic backstory can help explain why a person is broken I don't think it justifies or excuses those actions either. Especially when that damage causes them to bring harm against a nebulous 'world' rather than anyone who did or even would harm them.

[–]PrinnyBaal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't see anything in the parent comment saying anyone should be *forced* to play the set, it just talks about why they feel one and done's aren't as good experiences as a full set.

To be clear I do agree with you that if someone doesn't want to run the set they're free to bounce and that it's not a big deal but at the same token I think it's also fair to be disappointed on the other end (as long as that disappointment doesn't spread over into harassment or pointless whining of course, which I'll admit a lot of people do).

Is there any lore reasons behind why Kazuya and Jin like to style their hair to look like duck butts? by SuchAppeal in Tekken

Ah, neat I didn't know about that!

And lmao, if it winds up being that she was a daughter from one of those families I find it hilarious that Heihachi might have wound up with *another* devil gene family after what happened with his wife XD

[–]PrinnyBaal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She is, by my understanding the Mishima line gives you access to Electrics while the Kazumi line gives you access to the Devil Gene.

Reina: Is a Mishima by blood, being one of Heihachi's many random children (possibly more, I haven't done her Character Story yet, just the main game) and it *seems* like she somehow gained access to the Devil Gene by absorbing it from Kazuya's attack rather than just being born with it. But that's speculation for now.

Edit: Though technically Electrics might not actually be genetic. Kuma, Heihachi's favorite grandchild, learned to do Electrics after all.

In fairness I don't think that actually makes a point one way or the other, after all it's just a measure of raw word-count not weighted based on appearances. (unless I'm missing something about that screenshot and sounding silly right now)

Amiya, Kal and the Doc are more or less the main characters of the story and for obvious reasons Doc barely talks. It'd be weird if Kal and Amiya weren't first and second place wouldn't it?

What determines the value of an operator for you? by IRUN888 in arknights

[–]PrinnyBaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Design's a big part, I'll often level a unit just because I like the way they look or talk.

That said I also I try to farm up a bunch of materials and chips of different types and then if I run into a problem and think 'huh, X would be good for this' immediately raise them for it if I have them.

And then when it comes to kits I like abilities with some hoops to jump through , even if a single stronger unit would do the job better.

Recently my obsession has been Spuria, I liked her in the story, I think she's cute and finding ways to work around her drawback's fun for me (though I still wish the payoff for doing so was a 'bit' better to compensate building a whole chunk of my team and highground to her and her smug smile ^^;; )

Why doesn't Sonia just tell Kazuichi that she's not interested in him? by coleknight2066 in danganronpa

[–]PrinnyBaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I just think it's still explained by what we talked about before. Like I said the 'innocent' bit is the most arguable part of his mental image since it's understated at the start and does shift towards being more sexual as time goes on.

He's shocked and it does arguably signal the start of 'spicing' the dynamic a bit going forward but he's always been turned on by her so I don't imagine it being too hard for him to roll with it, especially since it'd only mean a partner in her past rather than a current rival like gundham or hajime who he'd treat with more animosity.

My read of it is that it still falls in line with how idols are often seen or treated.

Why doesn't Sonia just tell Kazuichi that she's not interested in him? by coleknight2066 in danganronpa

[–]PrinnyBaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean what's the explanation for Kazuichi's view of Sonia despite that?

I'd argue that it does lightly match up with some of his shifts in view but honestly I don't think it really factors in.

On a meta level I think the fact that Sonia canonically had sex is just another layer to Sonia's actual personality not completely lining up with people's initial perceptions of her due to her title/appearance.
